Today's Everyday Fashion: Shoe Change

I snapped these photos on the way out the door on Sunday. I wore the top outfit for church and dinner, and the bottom outfit for errands (Ikea means lots of walking). I love throwing an extra pair of shoes in my vehicle and switching depending on the occasion; it's a trick I use often! I'm also just a tad obsessed with polka dots lately, and I like how the bubble necklace plays off the pattern. Do you ever bring extra shoes with you?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Winter Brights

Maybe it's because I live in Florida, but I crave bright/fun color combos constantly, even in the winter. This inspiration photo caught my eye because I love that her wool coal is turquoise, and her cable knit sweater is bright purple. What fun winter clothes! I decided to give the same color combo a spin with my own clothes, resulting in a fall version of her outfit. What season(s) would you feel comfortable wearing this color combo?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Coincidence

People often ask me if I buy clothes solely for the purpose of re-creating inspiration photos, and the answer is definitely no! I sometimes use what inspires me to create a shopping list - so if I notice I have 20 photos saved with mint jeans, then I will add mint jeans to my shopping list. But I don't buy something just so I can re-create one photo. I've had this inspiration saved for over a year, and when I looked at it this week I realized by coincidence that I had all the (almost exact) pieces to re-create it. I'm loving the end result, and I'm excited to have another way to wear this polka dot shirt (see first outfit here). Have you ever spotted an outfit and realized you had all the pieces already in your closet?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Cozy Knits

I like hers better
How I wore it

Top photo: I like the inspiration outfit better than my recreation, but this photo answers two questions I've been hearing a lot lately. The first is can you wear cropped pants in the winter? I don't have boots that come up high enough to illustrate, but I think her outfit is a good example of how to do this. To cover the gap between the pants and the top of the boots, I would add a thick cable knit sock. The other question is how to not look "bigger" when wearing thick sweaters? While you can never look completely slim in a thick sweater and coat, you can wear something slim on the bottom to counteract the puffiness up top - either leggings (if your sweater covers your bum), cropped pants, or skinny jeans.

Bottom photo: When it's chilly, it's tempting to just throw on a hooded sweatshirt and jeans and be done with it! I opted for a knit sweater and slip on booties instead. Just as cozy, but packs way more style punch.

I'm so excited to introduce Page 6 Boutique to you guys today! They opened in 2004 and have two locations in South Carolina, as well as an online boutique. I wish this were my own wardrobe, however, I tried everything on and gave it back (minus a couple things!!). Read below for my full review, and be sure to join the Page 6 Facebook page, where you will find a coupon to score the pictured bubble necklace for just $9.99. They are also offering up a free bubble necklace of your choice (any color) to one lucky reader. To enter:

1. "Like" Page 6 on Facebook.
2. Leave a comment below.

The winner will be selected at random on midnight EST, 11/12. Good luck!

Shut the front door. The green dress outfit might be my favorite. The buttons on this shimmery navy jacket are fabulous, and it looks great with everything from an equestrian chain print dress, to preppy mustard jeans and an ivory top on the right!

Blue and green necklace, $35 - call to order 803-548-0559
Joe's mustard jeans, $158 - call to order 803-548-0559

Another favorite of mine - I love the mixed print effect of the outfit on the left. The texture of the orange crochet skirt, mixed with the printed top is a match made in heaven! I'm also loving cozy cable knits this fall (right) and the orange color is perfect with blue jeans and boots, flats, or pumps alike!

I had so much fun experimenting with this faux fur vest! I love the idea of wearing one over a sequin dress for a night out, or wearing it casually with jeans! These dark denim Hudsons were also my favorite jeans of the bunch, they fit great.

Sequin dress, $58
Ivory top, $34.99

Hudson jeans, $174 - call to order 803-548-0559

I love this coat!! It has pockets, and you can tie it tight for extra warmth (right), or tie it back and wear it open (left). Page 6 specializes in designer denim, and I loved the array of colors they sent, including this warm peach color and a medium gray.

Pattern coat, $89 - call to order 803-548-0559

I love Page 6's collection of colorful, silky tops. The quality is great on both of these tops, especially the button details - the cobalt shirt has pearl buttons surrounded in bright gold. They both look great paired with colorful denim, and an adorable crossbody purse that I will be wearing non-stop. Which look is your favorite?

Cobalt top, $39 - call to order 803-548-0559
Green top, $39.99

Brown Paige jeans, $158 - call to order 803-548-0559
Horse bit bracelet, $35
Double stone bracelet, $39

Sizing: Everything I'm wearing is a size Small, except for the green dress which is a Medium (I would go with my usual size, it's a bit big). The jeans are a size 25 - if purchasing I would go with my usual size, 26. And the red lace skirt fit tight so I would size up and get a Medium if purchasing. If you have other sizing questions, just let me know!

November Wish List

I haven't been shopping in ages, and most of last month's and this month's budget is still unspent. I'm hoping to hit up the mall next week, and part of my shopping "prep" always involves a good amount of browsing online first. I do this to get the lay of the land - find out what stores are carrying items on my wish list, compare prices, and set priorities for which stores I'd like to visit first. Then I use what I've learned to spend the majority of my budget in-store, because prices are often much lower in stores than online, and that way you can try things on. Here's what I found in preparation for my next shopping trip!

1. Limited - It's been three years since I bought a coat (I usually wear blazers as coats since I live in Florida now). I'll wait until coats go on clearance this winter, but this one is a major contender. My current pea coat is off-white, so I'll be on the lookout for cobalt, navy or camel.
2. Revolve - I'm dying for a colorful sweater coat like this one! It's perfect; I just need to find a lower price.
3. J.Crew - I try not to torture myself by shopping on J.Crew's website very often, but I happened to spot this blazer the other day and I'm obsessed. Here's hoping shopping fate brings me one on sale.
4. Banana Republic - I already have a navy blazer, but I love this one so much that it might be time to update, and sell the old one. I love the buttons!!
5. Lola Cruz - I'm on the hunt for Valentino look-alikes. These are the best ones I've found so far.
6. American Eagle - Mint skinnies are way high on my wish list this fall/winter!
7. Gap - Totally adorable and works for all seasons. Wear with red pumps in the spring/summer, and tights and boots in the fall/winter.
8. Old Navy - Off-white corduroy pants are an excellent way to wear "white" in the winter. Can't wait to add these or a similar pair to my closet this year.
9. Forever 21 - I'm hoping to track down this navy and off-white baseball tee at Forever 21. I've got a bunch of outfit ideas in mind for one just like it.

I'm also hoping to find a black leather handbag, black motorcycle boots and something camouflage this year. What's on your winter wish list?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Inspiration

My first attempt (not a fan)
The end result

I love today's inspiration outfit, however, I didn't love it on me (I prefer her proportions, with the longer tops). It wasn't a total loss though because I mades changes and wound up with the second outfit, and wore it for air travel last weekend (I was traveling for work so went a bit dressier than usual). Using inspiration as a shortcut, and yet staying true to yourself and putting your own spin on it = definitely my favorite method for getting dressed, and what I hope to inspire you guys to try each time I share an "inspired" outfit. What's your inspiration method? Which look do you prefer?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Airport Style

I wore this outfit for air travel last weekend. I like to be comfy while traveling - shoes that are easy to remove, layers to adjust for changing temperatures, and pants that are comfy to sit in for hours. But looking put together? Also hugely important for me, thanks to one awkward encounter many years ago. On that fateful day, I ran into my ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend at the airport and I was wearing a Teletubbies t-shirt. (Um, what?) I'm not sure why I was wearing that anywhere, let alone the airport (?!!), but after that encounter and many others where I either ran into someone I knew or made a business connection at the airport, I realized there is something to be said for looking stylish during air travel. As the saying goes, you never know when you might meet the President. What's your airport style?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Cheerful Colors

These turquoise pants haven't been the easiest to style, so I was thankful to stumble upon this photo for some inspiration. A thick neon sweater and a camel blazer make the pants more appropriate for chilly weather, and yet it's not your typical somber fall colors. Do you wear bright colors year-round, or just during warm months?

Last weekend I attended a hockey game in Grand Forks and this is what I wore. The navy jacket and black jeans are one of my favorite cool-weather combos (see previous way I wore it, below). Not only did I save this Banana Republic inspiration photo, but I also went out and bought the same shirt (total copycat). The Anatomy of a Trend

1. Camouflage  2. Tie dye  3. Wedge sneakers  4. Fair Isle  5. Captoe heels  6. Animal sweaters

I'm planning to try trends #1, 4 and 5 this year - which ones do you like?

"Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months." - Oscar Wilde

Today, let's talk about trends. I never used to buy trendy clothes. In fact, I am the girl who proclaimed she would never wear skinny jeans (whoops). If anything has changed about my style since blogging, being an early adopter of trends is it. It originally started because I wanted to try out trends and let you guys know if they worked in real life. But then I just started to love them. Like, a lot. Here's why:

1. Trends are different. I had a Nike Swoosh poster in high school that I hung upside down in my room because I was convinced I was the only person on the planet who had that poster hanging upside down. I was born with a very strong desire to be different, and trends help you do that.
2. Trends counteract boredom. I'm bored right now writing this! (j/k) But really, I swear that playing with accessories is just a grown-up version of building blocks, coloring, and being creative.
3. Trends push the envelope. I can be one sassy broad, and I like my clothing to reflect that. I also strongly believe that "the place you often look and feel your best is right outside your comfort zone." Trends help you push the limits.

So, what is a trend exactly? I came up with this life cycle to illustrate:

Step 1: The runways release a trend. It can be yours for just $20,000. (cue: expensive fashion magazines)
Step 2: Retail stores like Gucci and Chanel are the first ones to start mass producing the trend, and big budgets are able to try it first. (cue: expensive fashion blogs)
Step 3: Retail stores like H&M and Forever 21 start stocking the trend, so anyone can give it a whirl. (cue: budget bloggers and early adopters)
Step 4: The trend starts to catch on and before you know it everyone is wearing it. (cue: general public)
Step 5: Everyone gets bored, so the trend becomes passe and we abandon the trend for the next big thing. (cue: Oscar Wilde quote)

So when should you buy a trend? What trends should you invest in? Here's my advice:

1. The earlier, the better. I used to wait a year or two before I would adopt a trend but generally, if you like the trend, then don't wait. Be one of the first, because then you will get the most wear out of your item. Trends in the "real world" last at minimum a year or two, so you have at least that long if you adopt the trend early.
2. Your personal style. Above all, how do you feel about that trend? If "neon" has been your thing since you were five, then by all means, go for that trend! If peplum makes you uncomfortable, then don't feel any pressure to try it. The best factor for deciding whether or not you love a trend is just using your own taste, preferences and body type as a guide.
3. Evaluate longevity. The more "general" the trend is, the longer its staying power. Skinny jeans are a fit of pants, which is pretty general and they have now been in style for years, with no signs of letting up. More specific or louder trends like tie-dye or peep-toe booties are a bit tougher. They are less likely to be adopted by tons of people, and therefore less likely to be around for long.
4. Test the waters. Still unsure about a trend? Try testing the waters first, by buying an inexpensive item like a leopard blouse and giving it a test drive. If you still love it after a couple of months, then investing in a major piece like leopard shoes might be a good idea, or even in multiple leopard pieces like a skirt or another shirt.
5. There's always round two. Ever feel like you are having trend de ja vu? That's because trends cycle around and around. I read my trends post from the past three summers, and every single trend is still in style. And if "military" ever goes out of style, just wait a few years because it will be the hottest thing ever.... all over again.

How do you approach trends? Do you wait to adopt them or jump right in?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Boots with Skirts

You may recall that I first styled this dress for summer with white and orange (see here)! The cold-weather version in today's post was my dinner reception outfit in North Dakota this weekend. I tend to feel awkward in boots and a skirt, but this outfit felt pretty good. I've had several people ask about wearing boots and skirt for work, so I took a look back at some old posts for inspiration, below. Several of the skirts are far too short for work, but the general gist of these colors and shapes are what I would recommend. Do you wear boots and skirts together? How do you style them?

This inspiration photo totally caught my eye (minus the socks and sandals...), and it inspired me to put together a similar look with a chambray shirt and jeans, and a work version with a navy pencil skirt. This post brought to you by Fossil. All opinions are 100% mine.

I'm so excited to share two ways to wear a Fossil Vintage Revival Handbag with you today! I paired this bag with a casual boho look above, perfect for weekend errands or a cozy movie night. Below, I paired the bag with a suit skirt and snakeskin pieces for a trendy yet sophisticated work look. I love how easily it works for both day and night.

Fossil Vintage Revival Handbags are gorgeous in person and come in five colors - butterscotch, rust, pecan, spruce green and giraffe hair calf. Today's Everyday Fashion: Daniel Wellington

This outfit contains a whole bunch of my favorite things: mixing black and brown, tweed jackets, and chambray shirts. Add to that my new favorite watch and you have a deal. I've been wearing my current watch daily for just under two years. When Daniel Wellington offered to let me try a watch of my choice, I was excited to switch up my routine, but I was also blown away at how much I loved their designs! The face on this one has a large circumference very close in size to my old watch, but it's thin and the cognac strap gives it an uber-preppy look that I'm swooning over. I'm not throwing out my old watch just yet, but I'm excited to have a new option for outfits like today's. What is your watch style?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Tuxedo Blazer

I saved this photo because of her shoes! I love them, and I'm on the look out for unique ways to style my off-white python t-straps. Turns out that those shoes were not so hot with this outfit, so I wound up with this Nicholas Kirkwood inspired pair instead. I have a thing for tuxedo blazers (see how else I wore mine here and here) and I like the idea of wearing it with red corduroys for a bit of a early-holiday feel. Would you wear a tuxedo blazer?
