I love mixing pink and orange together, and this Banana ad was the perfect inspiration for wearing an old pink/orange t-shirt in a new way. Also, my hunt for the best new arrivals continues, with some favorites from The Limited below (planning to try on the chambray blazer and both pants).  What clothing items are you currently on the hunt for?  Let me know and I'll post some options for you in an upcoming post!

When I shop, I usually go alone. It's quick, to the point, and I can get down to business. :-) But from time to time it's fun to go with friends - you get real-time feedback in the dressing room, and you visit stores you might not normally go in. That was the case this week with Anthropologie - a store I don't usually stop by because of the price tag. I saw so much cute stuff though, I decided to share some of my favorites below (I stuck to pieces under $150 - the sale stalking begins). Do you prefer to shop alone or with others?

About today's look: Fergie is headed on a safari (or, the Miami airport) and I want to go too! I wore my version for a solo shopping trip about a week ago, but like her outfit even better.

I wore this for a late afternoon dinner and shopping with the girls. I found these shorts recently and love the higher rise and slightly pleated front. The paisley LOFT top was the perfect color match (see another outfit with it here), and speaking of LOFT, they have some of my favorite new arrivals right now, below. The dreamy mix of black/brown and other neutrals is great for summer now, and will transition easily to fall. Which pieces do you like?

"Oh hey Alexa Chung with your cute tuxedo blazer and black shorts on the red carpet. Don't mind if I copy your look." I would rock the bottom version for a night out. When I'm showing this much leg, I like to cover up my top half with a loose top and sleeves. And since we are on the topic of black and white, I shared some Bebe dresses I was drooling over at the mall this week below. I haven't been in that store in years, but I was seriously tempted to buy the black lace option for my b-day. (The hunt continues...) Do you think Alexa's look works in real life?

It's never too late for a 4th of July outfit, right? I am such a huge fan of the subdued mix of prints in the inspiration photo. My own attempt wound up being much more bold, but I would wear this patriotic look for a picnic, holiday or not. Would you wear stripes and dots?

ps. I'm bringing back the old-school "Today's Everyday Fashion" title! The switch from Blogger to Squarespace has been incredibly bumpy, and I've got a list of issues still left to tackle. The title is for SEO purposes, and if you are trying to add my blog to Feedly, or imported it from Google Reader, they assure me this link should fix the RSS issues ya'll were kind enough to report.

A reader shared this inspiration photo with me ages ago - it's a screenshot of Lara Spencer on a morning show. I still don't have a striped skirt like hers, but I switched the colors around and went for a striped top instead. You could also try a striped top with a white skirt and navy blazer, depending on what you have in your closet. And nude shoes, if the "white" trend is not your thing. How would you style it?

Today I'm using one of my favorite tricks: wearing a dress as a shirt. The final outfit is not all that similar to the inspiration photo, but the electric blue skirt I originally tried felt a little too vampy, and I like the subdued seafoam skirt better. You can see another leopard/mint look here, and a similar look with the same skirt two years ago here. What color skirt would you wear with a leopard top?

My Typical Week

visit florida moments via Instagram

visit florida moments via Instagram

This was my last week as VISIT FLORIDA's Shopping Insider! After two years, more than 300 posts and articles, a handful of videos, and travel to every major city in the state, I am both sad and excited to be moving on. I have enjoyed this gig so much over the past two years, but as things with my own business have increasingly gotten busier and busier, I’ve had to cut back on some commitments including personal shopping, and now the Shopping Insider program.

Which leads me to the subject of today’s post… what exactly is my career? As you may know, I lost my marketing job due to economy-related budget cuts two years ago and have been a full-time blogger/freelancer ever since. This is one of the questions I get the most often, the first being “how do bloggers make money?” which is the title of my presentation at Florida BlogCon this year (shameless plug: you can buy tickets here). The next question I hear most is “what does a typical week look like for you?” which I will be answering today.

It may seem like a glamorous career from the outside: running a fashion website, being my own boss, working from home. I love my job and the flexibility - I can travel at a moment’s notice, and do my job from anywhere.

But it’s honestly not all that glamorous when you drill down to the daily tasks! You can picture me at home in my pajamas working at my computer 7 days a week. I play dress up in my room and take pictures using the self-timer on my camera. I’m essentially a huge social media nerd, working mostly alone, and fashion is involved in maybe 20% of what I do.

I feel incredibly blessed by my career, but sometimes I would love going back to a “normal” job, too! I miss the social aspect of working in an office, and having a reason to buy and wear work clothes. It’s a Catch-22, because I think working in an office would help with creativity and coming up with outfits for the blog (especially for you working ladies!), but my schedule is already so overwhelming, I think it would be hard to maintain both.

While I won’t count out an office job in the future, for now this is how my week is set up. I've always been a workaholic (straight A’s in high school and college, yo), so right now I put in 60-80 hours per week. In December I was working a lot more and feeling burnt out, so at the urging of my friends, I cut back and hired an assistant part-time. Between the tasks that are now off my plate thanks to my assistant (admin tasks and sponsorship emails), cutting back on activities (Shopping Insider) and working less on weekends – it has been a much, much better work life balance this spring/summer. It’s definitely a work in progress though!

Here’s how my week looks:

VISIT FLORIDA Shopping Insider duties = 20 hours per week - DONE!

Writing blog posts, 4 hours a day, 7 days a week = 28 hours per week
Taking blog pictures, organizing inspiration photos = 15 hours per week
Answering reader comments and tweets = 10 hours per week
Answering emails = between 10-40 hours per week
Networking events/lunches (necessary to get me out of the house and staying connected to the community) = 2 hours per week

In addition to this list, I try to schedule one event or long-term project per week. Here are some examples of what I might be working on:

  • Launching a new web design/hosting platform =  80 hours over 3 weeks, with tasks still left to complete (like making the image gallery searchable!)
  • Appearing on a morning show = 10 hours, twice this year
  • Hosting a fashion event = 4 hours, twice this year
  • Shooting a video for a company = 4-8 hours, four times this year
  • Speaking at a social media conference = 8 hours, two upcoming
  • Writing a guest post for another website or publication = 4-8 hours each (published in the Wall Street Journal, appeared in a Miss USA advertisement for Chinese Laundry, and wrote a shopping guide for a local mall, to name a few)
  • Managing CFL Lady Bloggers social media, planning meetups = 2-4 hours
  • Tasks related to filing taxes, managing my own healthcare, and a slew of things companies generally manage for you when you work for them = 10-20 hours

I’m always trying to manage my time better, and evaluate priorities. There are so many things I’d love to be doing more of, or doing better, and I seriously wish I could answer every reader question and help every person who asks with their closet! I would love that! Since I have an “extra” (that’s funny) 20 hours a week to spare now, it will be interesting deciding what to focus my time on next.

If you are a full-time blogger or work from home, I would love to hear your tips for staying sane, managing time, etc. so please share below. (I found a couple articles with tips you might like here and here.)

I hope you enjoyed reading – let me know if you have questions, or suggestions for other post topics!

Karolina inspired me to pull my cobalt blazer out of the closet. Her Vince Camuto top reminded me of one of my favorite geometric tops from last year, and even though it's not a perfect match, it achieved a similar look for less.  Do you think Karolina's outfit works in real life?

The Perfect Pair

I couldn't find a more perfect pair of shoes if I designed them myself. That's how I felt when I found these Nine West wedges on the clearance rack at DSW last week! I returned the brown (unworn) sandals from my March budget (post here), and used a $5 birthday coupon, which brought the price to $17. I also ended a several-month hunt for a pair of lightweight neon sneakers, pic below. As for today's outfit? I love this J.Crew catalog picture from last year and was psyched to realize I had similar pieces in my closet, and wore it for grocery shopping. If you could design the perfect shoe, what would it look like?

I'm totally digging this outfit I spotted on a Banana mannequin last week. So much so, that I decided to re-create it at home! I've had this striped top for probably 8 years, and am on the lookout for a replacement since it's a tad too small. I'm also sharing an office look with the same top from last summer. Which way would you wear it?

 Top, Shorts   /   Dress
  Similar Top, Shorts

Loved the first outfit. The top is listed as a swim cover up, but was too short to wear without bottoms, and too long to wear with bottoms (it's tucked in the photo but wouldn't actually work like that) so I passed. The shorts were fab and I ordered them in turquoise from another store. I went up a size on the dress, but it was more formal than what I'm looking for.

I bought the first dress (instant yes!). Loved the yellow dress but ultimately decided separates would be more versatile. Loved the hot pink shorts but I think I want a slightly shorter inseam so I passed for now. Which one is your favorite?

This Piperlime advertisement inspired me to pull my camo pants out of the closet! The pairing with coral felt fresh and summery, but ultimately it was too hot for a blazer so I wore it as shown to dinner last week. (You are also seeing one pre-haircut picture and another post.) If camouflage is not your cup of tea, olive pants or an olive skirt would also work well in this look. How would you wear it?

Alessandra Ambrosio is one of my favorite street stylers. She knows how to rock a pair of shorts, which is perfect for the sweltering heat we are experiencing in Florida right now. A lightweight chambray top is a great pairing with these shorts, now if only I could get my tuck and sleeves to look as good as hers! I never seem to tire of my favorite mustard cardigan. I was watching Project Runway a couple years ago and Michael Kors expressed his dislike for the color and I was all like "Hey Michael Kors, I may know diddly-squat about fashion compared to you, but I'm sticking with mustard - on my hot dogs and on my clothes." Pretty sure I won that argument since he didn't reply. And so the mustard love will continue, as seen in today's look inspired by a photo I recently found. I love this quirky combo for running errands. Would you wear today's look?

The $35 Suit with Walmart

The only thing more exciting than Walmart asking you to appear in a video? Them asking you back for round two!! :-) If you follow on Instagram, you may recall I made a second trip out to San Francisco in May. This time, I shot a fall video about the $35 suit. I also video-blogged during the trip, so click "play" above to see my behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot. Then head over to Walmart.com to see me in action on their website and shop my favorites below. Which piece is your favorite? What part of the behind-the-scenes was the most fun to watch?

The cutie patootie inspiration photo reminded me of a similar floral shirt from last summer. So I followed suit and paired it with yellow denim shorts, and topped it off with a hot pink cardigan.
