In college my friends used to sing "who wears short shorts?" to poke fun at the itty bitty shorts I wore. My shorts today are much longer than they used to be, even these two pairs from 3 years ago that are among the shortest pairs I own. When I'm shopping for shorts now, my preferred inseam length is between 4-5 inches (2-3 inches longer than the shorts pictured) although I would go shorter or longer, depending on the fit. Some shorts can appear longer due to a high-waisted fit and having more material, or because of looseness around the leg opening (like a boyfriend fit). Inseams and knowing your preferred length can be a great starting point when shopping though, especially at stores and websites that group their shorts together by inseam length.
