Today's Everyday Fashion: Mint Condition

Inspiration: FabSugar

Naomi Watts inspired me to pair mint jeans with layered neutrals for this comfy outfit on a recent trip to San Francisco. My packing strategy was to bring three pairs of shoes - ankle boots, pumps and these loafers - that were all the same color, so that all of my shoes could be worn with any outfit in my suitcase. I wound up wearing it with ankle boots (it was chilly), but I love the loafers pictured even more. Would you wear Naomi's look?

My January & February Budget

Here's a recap of everything I bought in January and February! Items on my wish list that I crossed off include mint jeans, nude pointy toe pumps, a sheath work dress, cobalt blazer, and dark skinny jeans. I also picked up a bunch of t-shirts for casual days and a few fun, trendy items like the neon anorak. But my overall goal was to buy quality versus quantity, and pieces that I will wear to death. What items have you invested in this year? What items are on your spring wish list?

1. Zara jacket, $90 (similar, similar, similar)
2. Zara jacket, $40 (similar, similar, similar)
3. F21 mint jeans, $25
4. F21 mint tank, $7 (similar)
5. J.Crew shirt, $35 (similarsimilar)
6. Piperlime pumps, $32
7. DSW Audrey Brooke, $20 (similar)
8. Gap t-shirts, $9

= $258

1. This jacket was a huge chunk of my budget, but well worth the investment. I've already worn it ten times and plan to love it for years to come. It was on sale, original price $130.
2. Another sale purchase (I don't recall the original price) and another classic ladylike jacket that I'll love forever. I have nothing similar in my closet.
3. After a year-long hunt, I finally crossed off mint jeans on my wish list! I also acquired these Gap mint jeans c/o.
4. An undershirt / summer tank in the perfect shade of mint.
5. I added yet another silk campshirt to my collection with this top from J.Crew. I couldn't pass up the in-store sale price; the Blythe blouse is usually $110 full price.
6. My hunt for nude, pointy toe pumps ended when I found this brand-name pair for a steal online.
7. Buying out-of-season sometimes pays off, like these sandals on sale at DSW (original price I believe is $90). I will be wearing them a ton this summer.
8. I used $20 in Gap rewards to get these three t-shirts for $9 total. I love the neon colors (periwinkle, orange and pink) and they are perfect for casual days.

1. Banana dress, $50 Christmas gift card
2. H&M jeans, $32 (similar, similar, similar)
3. Limited anorak, $37
4. F21 cobalt blazer, $30
5. F21 Journey shirt, $18
6. Limited cardigan, $30
7. Express cardigan, $27
8. Express aztec t-shirt, $25
9. Limited belt, $20
10. Ann Taylor lace shirt, $30
11. Old Navy mint tee, $10 (similar)

= $259

1. I've been on the hunt for classic work sheaths in fun colors and this one was $70 in the store (only petite sizes), plus an extra 25% off sale promo. I used a $50 gift card from Christmas so only wound up paying a few dollars for it.
2. My hunt for the perfect pair of dark, slightly distressed denim ended - of all places - at H&M! I never buy jeans there, who knew? I used a 20% off coupon on the original $40 price tag.
3. I fell in love with this fun anorak online and had to have it. In-store price was $49, and I used a coupon for an additional $15 off.
4. I featured this blazer in this blog post and wound up ordering it. Looks great in person, I can't wait to wear it.
5. I featured this baseball tee in this blog post and wound up ordering it!
6. I unwrapped a piece of chocolate when I entered the store that was good for 40% off everything full-price, which I used on this Tory-Burch-esque cardigan.
7. I've worn my similar sweater coat to death, and thought a thinner version would be a perfect staple for Florida weather. It was on promo for $39 in the store, plus I used a coupon for another $15 off.
8. This shirt is way cuter and more neon in person. I used a coupon to get $15 off.
9. This belt was an instant "yes" for me - I want to spend the day on a yacht and wear a navy blazer with gold buttons. It also kind of reminds me of an underwear band, but I'm comfortable with that. I used a 40% off coupon.
10. I was shopping with a friend and tried on this sale shirt and fell in love. I want to style it in a boho outfit, stay tuned.
11. Another great casual t-shirt, found on clearance.

My monthly budget is $250 (I had a little left over from December). For more info, please see "How to Set a Clothing Budget."

Today's Everyday Fashion: Juxtapose

My favorite fashion trick is definitely juxtaposing two "opposite" pieces. Hard and soft, feminine and masculine - like leather and lace, or the edgy t-shirt and preppy jacket in today's look. Thanks to the lovely Marie Denee for snapping these photos while we were in San Francisco, and you can see the previous way I wore this graphic tank here. What are your favorite items to juxtapose?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Airport Style

You wake up at 3:30am, spend eight hours flying and are planning to site-see in San Francisco as soon as you land - what do you wear? This was what I rocked for that very occasion on Tuesday. It was a little chilly when I arrived so I added a cardigan under my jacket, but otherwise I felt comfy, casual but still stylish. I covered my tired eyes with my favorite Banana aviators and I was ready to rock (SF is gorgeous by the way, wish I could've stayed longer!).

Also: I re-enforced the large hole in these jeans with an iron-on patch (like this one). It is one of my favorite tricks for keeping distressing in tact and not allowing any skin to show through!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Spring Fever

I might be a tad over-eager for spring to get here. I can't wait to wear neon, bright colors and skirts! I busted out my spring ideas a little too soon when I wore this outfit in Orlando recently. The venue + weather didn't match the outfit and I felt silly, but confidence is 99% of the battle so I rocked it and didn't let it ruin my night. It was a friendly reminder that you can love an outfit, but it also has to make sense within the setting. ;-) I also carried a bright blue leather clutch, not pictured, but same color as my shirt, see it hereWhat spring fashion are you most looking forward to?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Jailbird

Inspiration: WhoWhatWear

Thanks to today's inspiration photo and others I've seen in magazines lately, I'm loving the black and white graphic trend. It inspired me to pair my striped top with a black and white colorblocked skirt, which I would love more if the skirt wasn't slightly more white than the ivory top. ;-) I also had the random thought to pair the same top with my plaid jeans - a result I think you'll agree is very Gwen Stefani. And lastly... I decided to show every way I've worn this jailbird shirt so far. Outfit #2 is my favorite, which might have a little something to do with my love for mixing black and brown together. Which outfit is your favorite?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Now and Later

When I first got this sweater, I immediately wanted to pair it with ivory jeans and colorful accessories for a spring/summer look (top photo). The day I actually wound up wearing the sweater, it was dark and chilly and my previous idea just didn't fit the mood, so I wound up wearing it with dark denim as pictured (bottom photo), and will be saving the spring version to wear in a few weeks! It's one sweater, two ways to wear it. One for now, and one for later! Which outfit do you like more?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Statement Piece

Inspiration: Pinterest

Today, we explore layering statement accesories over a striped top. First I tried a leopard scarf inspired by Pinterest, and then I tried a statement necklace. I love how only one thing was changed, but they look like totally different outfits. Also, I've got fun, colorful sneakers on my shopping wish list, so I thought I'd share what I've found so far, below. Which outfit is your favorite? Which sneakers do you like?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Minty Fresh

Inspiration: Pinterest

My enthusiastic, year-long hunt for the perfect pair of mint jeans is over... and it resulted in me owning not one, but two pairs. (These and the Gap Skimmers.) I normally wouldn't buy two items that are so similar, but lately my shopping planning hasn't been so much planning as winging it. Everybody makes mistakes (if I could go back, I would've held out for the Gap pair), but mistakes that result in twice the minty fresh denim fun can hardly be penalized in my book. ;-) What are your favorite denim colors for spring? Would you wear mint + leopard?

I loved the pattern top paired with bright colors in the inspiration photo. Since the picture doesn't show the rest of the outfit, my imagination was full of possibilities for the bottom half. Black jeans, yellow shoes? White jeans, pink shoes? Or, what I wound up wearing, dark denim and turquoise shoes. How would you finish this outfit?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Skirt Trick

Inspiration: Nasty Gal
Same dress x 4

I wore this for a speaking engagement in Tallahassee yesterday! (It was for my VISIT FLORIDA gig.) I was craving the cobalt skirt + necklace combo, and Dalmatian print felt like the perfect print to combine it with. I only have a Dalmatian dress, and while I love wearing dresses as tops, this is the first time I've tried one with a fitted pencil skirt (I usually go for a fuller skirt, like so). The dress adds some warmth, and also gets rid of any hints of VPL, but it made my skirt a bit tighter and I had to make sure the dress stayed in position throughout the day. In the end, I could hardly tell I was wearing a dress and I don't think anyone would've ever guessed, so it's a trick I plan to try again. Do you ever wear dresses as shirts?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Leopard Cardigan

There's nothing quite like scrolling through Pinterest and realizing you already have an outfit you pinned hanging in your closet. Quite possibly the fastest and easiest way to get dressed, ever! I haven't worn this leopard cardigan in ages, so I was happy to dust it off and put it back into rotation, especially when paired with yellow and cognac. Would you wear a leopard cardigan?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Winter Pink

Inspiration: The Limited

You can wear ivory jeans and hot pink in the winter?! That's what I remember thinking when I first found the inspiration photo a couple years ago. I adore her snow bunny look, and only wish I had the furry gray boots and hot pink wool coat to re-create it. Instead, I did a toned-down warmer-weather version with the same basic color palette. Hot pink is definitely an option in the winter, and these are a couple ways you can try it! How would you wear this look?

This jacket is pretty much my favorite item in my closet. I wore it a lot in real life this fall/winter, and posted tons of outfits with it here - so many that I'm not sure whether to apologize or be excited. My most recent outfit is at the top; the possibilities seem endless and I never seem to tire of it. It's like Groundhog Day, but green and a jacket. Which look is your favorite? Do you own a military jacket?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Blush and Neutrals

Inspiration: Talbots

I wore this yesterday for church, lunch, and a small roadtrip. I was inspired to mix blush with neutrals thanks to my inspiration photo - or rather, I put together this outfit in my closet and then remembered the photo, realizing that's probably where I got the idea. :-) Also, boots are very much on sale right now so I'm hoping to pick up a pair. Finding ones that aren't huge on my calves has been tough, but I love every single pair below so I'm getting out my measuring tape and reading a bunch of reviews, then picking a couple to try. Would you wear these colors? What boots would you order?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Trendy Items

Inspiration: J.Crew

After my tie dye post earlier this week, I couldn't wait to get started on brainstorming additional ways to wear these jeans. My last two outfits were casual and for a night out, so this time I went for something I could wear during the day. When styling a trendy item like this I like to ask myself - does the item actually make the outfit better? I try not to wear trendy items just for the sake of wearing them. So in this case, while regular blue jeans would look great in this outfit, the tie dye adds a certain flare that I am personally digging more than just plain jeans. Also - check out some new arrivals that I'm loving below! Have you ever used this trick for styling trendy items? What new arrivals are you loving?

Ladies, the hunt for mint skinnies has officially ended! I first tried these mint Gap Skimmers on in December (featured them on the blog here) and loved them, so when Gap got in touch and asked me to style them five different ways, I said "yes please!" (I got to choose which color I wanted.)

For this post I tried to think of all the versatile ways you could wear these jeans - with everything from sneakers for a day at the park, to ankle boots for a festival, to lace for a night out. There really are endless possibilities, and the Gap Skimmers come in tons of other colors including floral, polka dots, vibrant colors, and regular blue denim, and prices start at $69.95. Which outfit in today's post is most your style? How would you wear these jeans?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Neon Yellow

Today's post is a mash up of ideas one with common theme - neon yellow! I'm loving this color for spring, and I wanted to try some outfits with my new anorak. Jeans and a bright t-shirt were the easiest combo (left, that's my dog Bella!), and for the more adventurous I thought I'd try the same jacket with camo pants and matching neon yellow shoes (middle, pretty out there but I would totally rock it). And finally, another camo and neon yellow look, this one sans pink. *whew* I think that covers it! Which look is your favorite?

How To Layer Necklaces

Original post

I don't consider myself a necklace layering pro by any means. Figuring out how to wear three or more necklaces together has been challenging, so it made me really happy when I came up with this combo last summer using necklaces already in my closet (picture above). Here's my secret on how I overcame my mental roadblock + a couple other tips I've gathered to help you get inspired!

1. Hang them. Last summer I hung hooks just like the one below on my closet walls, for organizing my "delicate" necklaces. Seeing my necklaces on the wall was my lightbulb moment.  Instead of trying a bunch around my neck, I was able to see on the wall which ones would be the right length to layer together. You can easily do this with any nail, etc., and then pick lengths from there.

Container Store, $6.99

2. Get inspired. There is so much amazing necklace layering creativity on Pinterest. These are a few of my favorites; pictures like these challenge me to think outside the box!

3. Get technical. Use this chart to order the desired necklace lengths online - or measure your necklaces at home with a ruler - and create your own combo.

4. Use a formula. The recent Stella & Dot "layering school" email (some of which is pictured below) is what reminded me to do a post about layering necklaces. I love that you can cheat and order the combos they already came up with!
