Flashback Friday: The Camel Skirt

This camel skirt from J.Crew ($45) was an item I knew I wanted right away. I loved the color and texture and the comfort of an elastic waistband and pockets are hard to beat. One downfall: it can be tough to wear a ruched waistline like this. Shirts either have to be thick enough to cover the waistband entirely (look 6) or tucked in (the rest of the look). Beyond that, this skirt could not be more versatile. It can be dressed up with sequins or a blazer, and dressed down with flat boots or an oversized sweater and pretty much any color goes. Which look is your favorite?

Looking for a similar skirt? I've seen similar styles at LOFT, H&M and J.Crew recently (but no links online). Also check out these from Modcloth, ASOS.com and Express.

Today's Everyday Fashion: Neon, Neon

I love neon. Maybe it's because I'm a child of the '80's, but I love it so much I wanted to find a way to wear it to work. The colors in this outfit remind me of the diving sticks I used in the pool as a kid = I'm in love.

Styling tips: The top half of this outfit is punchy and colorful. When making a large statement in your outfit like this, keep the rest of it simple. The choice to wear nude, super-professional shoes and neutral accessories was on purpose, to help keep the color within reason. Tell me - would you wear neon to work?

Occasion: Work
Inspiration photo: Boden USA
Cardigan: Banana Republic, $12
Shirt: Forever 21, $8
Belt: Gap, $15 (recent)
Skirt: LOFT, $55 (recent)
Earrings: Urban Outfitters, $5
Shoes: BCBG/Ross, $23
Watch: Michael Kors, gift
Bracelets: Forever 21, $8

Today's Everyday Fashion: Make It Work... For Work

Today's look is all about dressing up your casual, basic pieces for work or another occasion where jeans aren't appropriate. At the core, this is a T-shirt and cargos, but with the shirt tucked in, and the addition of some heels, a belt and long necklace it really transforms the outfit! Make it work... for work. :-)

Styling tips: Are your pants too long for your shoes? (In other words, are your pants scrunched up around your ankles and/or won't fit over your shoes?) My favorite trick lately is to just roll them up! I've done it here with my skinny cargos, and the LOFT model also did it with her looser-fit pants. Give it a try!

Occasion: Work
Inspiration photo: Ann Taylor
Shirt: Forever 21, $18
Cargos: Sanctuary Surplus/Nordstrom Rack, $40
Necklace: LOFT, $20
Belt: Limited, $15
Shoes: Aldo, $50

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Hunt for a Mustard Cardigan

Let's cut to the chase. I could say a bunch of stuff about my outfit, but all you guys really want to know is where you can buy a mustard cardigan. :-) Here are some options:

1. Forever 21, $18 (this will sell out quick, so act fast!)
2. Urban Outfitters, $38 (use code THEMUSICISSUE for 10% off)
3. JcPenney, $36
4. LA Posh Style, $29

Styling tips: Okay, now let's talk about today's outfit! If you have a bunch of black and white pieces in your closet and no color, today's look is an example of how you can pair those neutrals with new colors. A mustard cardigan is a great addition - so is a red shoe. Together they are a bit mustard and ketchup, but I happen to like the combo. :-) What colors do you use to spice up your basic black pieces?

Occasion: Work
Cardigan: H&M, $18
Shirt: Banana Republic, $35
Belt: Forever 21, $5
Skirt: Limited, $35
Shoes: Delicious/Shoe Carnival, $10
Earrings: Urban Outfitters, $5
Watch: Michael Kors, Christmas present
Bracelets: Forever 21, $8

Today's Everyday Fashion: Day to Date

What I love most about today's look is that's transitional. Just remove the jacket and go from day to date! The first outfit with the suit jacket is perfect for work, and the bit of lace peeking out is super-stylish but still professional. The second outfit without the jacket works for a date or a night out with the girls. You could also throw on skinny jeans instead of the skirt for a totally different look! How do you transition your clothes from work to a night out?

Occasion: Day to Date
Jacket: Banana Republic, $90
Lace shirt: Charlotte Russe, $20
Belt: Gap, $10
Skirt: Banana Republic, $35
Shoes: Bandolino/TJ Maxx, $25
Watch: Micheal Kors, Christmas present
Bracelets: Forever 21, $8
Earrings: c/o Pop of Chic, $12

Today's Everyday Fashion: Maxi Dress Mania

I've got maxi dresses on my mind this spring! I talked about them being a big trend in my Spring Shopping Guide and I've been on the hunt to add one to my collection ever since. Thanks to the folks at the Unique Closet, I got to try on a bunch for size. Here's what I found:

Dress: The Unique Closet, $42.50
Shoes: Guess/DSW, $20
Earrings: Banana Republic, $20
Details:This one has lightly padded top (which I love) and a slightly silky material. Overall this one was my favorite! I'm 5'7" and wearing 3.5 inch heels. The dress is a size Small.

Dress: The Unique Closet, $44
Flats: Macy's, $10
Necklace: Forever 21, $8
Details: This one would be perfect for a petite woman (because it was quite short on me). I loved the colors on this dress though - and especially how it made the turquoise necklace pop. I'm 5'7" and wearing flat shoes. The dress is size Small.

Dress: The Unique Closet, $34
Shoes: Guess/DSW, $20
Necklace: Banana Republic, $40
Details: This dress is perfect for the tall girls out there! This one has a super-comfy feel, so I dressed it up with some fancy jewels. I'm 57", wearing 3.5 inch shoes. The dress is a size Small.

Dress: The Unique Closet, $30
Sandals: Chinese Laundry/DSW, $27
Necklace: Aldo, $20
Details: This dress could not be more perfect for a music festival! It has plenty of room for a curvy figure, and you honestly can't beat the price! I'm 5'7" and wearing flat shoes. The dress is a size Small.

Disclaimer: These are not my clothes. I simply borrowed them for this blog post. I got to keep one - I chose dress #1 and am wearing it to church and a soccer game today! :-)

Today's Everyday Fashion: Pop of Chic

Yesterday my styling skills were put to the test. Brink magazine asked me to take guys off the street and give them mini-makeovers for their upcoming issue! The fact that I've never done men's clothing only added to the excitement. :-) Overall, we had a great time and I can't wait to show you the before and after pictures. Turns out men's fashion is more fun than I thought!

Styling tips: I'm a huge fan of short-shorts, but I'm always careful to balance them out with a loose-fitting shirt with sleeves. If you prefer to show off the top-half, the same rules apply. Don't pair a tube-top with tiny shorts - wear it with jeans or a loose skirt.

Occasion: Photo shoot with Brink magazine
Shirt: c/o Varga Store, $44
Shorts: Forever 21, $20
Belt: H&M, $20
Shoes: Guess/DSW, $20
Necklace: c/o Designs by Mandi, $14
Watch: Michael Kors, Christmas present
Bracelets: Forever 21, $8
Earrings (photo below): c/o Pop of Chic, $12

Flashback Friday: The Navy Blazer

[Click the photo to view it larger.] Today's Flashback Friday features one of my favorite pieces of all time, the navy blazer, worn 14 different ways. This blazer taught me a valuable lesson that I will never forget. I spent $70 for it at the Gap three years ago because I loved the one I saw at J.Crew for $300. At the time, I had never spent more than $30 on a clothing item and the $70 price seemed outrageous. I'm still not sure what made me "splurge", but I quickly learned the value of spending a little more on something that you will love and wear over and over again. A closet full of $5-10 items will never feel quite right without a few high-quality staples such as a blazer like this to pull them together!

Styling tips: What I love about these outfits is that I'm wearing a different bottom in almost every photo. I also love the variation of shoes (only a couple repeats). I'm thinking a navy blazer might be one of the most versatile items out there - what do you guys think? Do you have a navy blazer? What do you wear it with?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Punk Rock Prep

You've seen me in similar preppy looks before, but what I love about this inspiration photo and tried to re-create is the punk rock attitude. My top half says I'm attending an Ivy League school, while my bottom half indicates I might be at a rock concert. And I kind of like it that way. :-)

Styling tip: Mix and match styles like ballet with military, rock-n-roll with preppy and goth with equestrian for some seriously stylish ensembles. What are your favorite "genres" to mix and match?

Occasion: Work
Inspiration photo: Street Peeper
Blazer: Gap, $70
Shirt: Ralph Lauren outlet, $20
Brooch: Banana Republic, $18
Pants: Gap, $20
Shoes: Carlos Santana/DSW, $33
Watch: Michael Kors, Christmas present
Bracelets: Forever 21, $8

Today's Everyday Fashion: My Favorite

I try not to play favorites with my clothes, but this just might be my favorite looks ever. Ever!! I'm equally obsessed with the inspiration photo. All except that crazy pouf on top of her head. Try wearing that to a mall in the Midwest.

Styling tips: Are all of your bottoms neutral colors like black, navy, taupe or ivory? Challenge yourself to pick up a floral pencil skirt, some pink chinos or another fun bottom this spring! It's a great way to mix up your closet, and you can find more things to pair with it than you think. (I have so many outfit ideas for this aqua skirt coming up!!)

Occasion: Work
Inspiration photo: Harper's Bazaar
Cardigan: LOFT, $20 (recent)
Shirt: J.Crew, $40
Skirt: LOFT, $55 (recent)
Belt: Gap, $10
Shoes: Banana Republic, $22
Earrings: Urban Outfitters, $5

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Denim Alternative

What I love about this outfit is that it is just as comfy, if not more comfy than wearing jeans -- but you can also get away with wearing it at work. These pants are dressy, but they are lined with a silky material that makes you feel like you're wearing pajama pants. The cork wedges are really comfortable and have a laid-back vibe, and the leather jacket just puts you in a good mood.  Overall, the epitome of comfort and style mixed together. Not only would this work at the office, but I think it's a cute look for running errands too! How do you balance being comfortable and dressed up at work? Are you on team comfort or team style?

Occasion: Work
Jacket: Banana Republic, $150
Shirt: Banana Republic, $35
Sweater: Banana Republic, $30
Pants: Gap, really old
Necklace: Banana Republic, $20
Shoes: Guess/DSW, $20 (recent)
Bracelets: Forever 21, $8

Today's Everyday Fashion: Office Barbie

Is it possible to look professional and still be feminine and sexy at the office? I think this picture says it all. We've got brunette Barbie on the left, and blond Barbie on the right. :-)

Styling tip: Don't wait for a special occasion to wear red shoes, and don't only wear them with black and white. Give them a try them with pinks and purples - the colors right next to red on the color wheel!

Occasion: Work
Inspiration photo: J.Crew
Trench coat: New York & Company, $50
Shirt: Limited, really old
Skirt: Limited, $35 (recent)
Shoes: Delicious/Shoe Carnival, $10
Earrings: Forever 21, $8
Watch: Michael Kors, Christmas present

Today's Everyday Fashion: Secrets of Shopping at Forever 21

We established how much I love rainbows last week, so there's no need for me to explain why I had to have this Forever 21 dress! :-) You guys also know that I am a frequent Forever 21 shopper, but it can be an overwhelming and frustrating store to shop at, so I though I'd share my tips and secrets for finding the best deals!

1. Shop online first. Shopping at a Forever 21 store can be soooo overwhelming. Shopping online can be frustrating because items don't always fit like the picture. Do what I do: shop online, then head to the store to check things out in person. This will help you navigate your way through the store and find things you like, but it will also help you avoid buying a bunch of stuff that doesn't look great in person.
2. Check new arrivals daily. The other frustrating thing about Forever 21 is that items sell out really fast. To find the best items, check new arrivals daily. The really good stuff only lasts for an average of 2 days.
3. Check online quantities. Want to make an online purchase, but need more time to make a decision? You can check how many are left in stock by adding 20 (the maximum quantity) to your bag. If it says out of stock, then there are less than 20 remaining and so I wouldn't wait much longer to order. You can also see the exact number that are in stock by selecting quantities until it no longer says "out of stock."
4. Return whenever you want. Forever 21 does not offer refunds (they only give you store credit). They also don't take returns after 21 days. But what you might not know is that you can get around store policy by EXCHANGING (not returning) an item whenever you want as long as the tag is still attached. (one exception: jewelry is final sale) This is NOT the official return policy!! But if it's 6 months later and the tags are attached - take it to the store and make an exchange without the receipt, I've done it many times!
Update 5/16/12 - While I personally haven't shopped much at Forever 21 over the past year, I have heard numerous reports from readers that their return policy has changed. This little exchange trick I used to do was never the official policy, however, it sounds like they are cracking down now and this trick has not been working lately.
5. Check for quality. Forever 21 offers shirts and dresses that are 100% silk for under $35. These higher-quality items have a special tag that specifies 100% silk and are the ones to go for, since other stores charge at least $80 for a silk tank top!
6. Compare prices. Don't fall victim to the mentality that just because you are in Forever 21, all of the prices are great. They seriously overcharge on some items - so take a second and think about the item you are purchasing to make sure it's worth what they are asking.

Occasion: Lunch date, shooting promos for my upcoming show on Izon Orlando!
Dress: Forever 21, $20
Cardigan: Gap, $18
Belt: Gap, $40
Shoes: Guess/DSW, $20
Earrings: Banana Republic, $15

J's Wedding Dress Picks

Frothy

My friend Stafford recently got engaged (yay!) and asked for some help finding a dress. I immediately went to Priscilla of Boston, which is my favorite bridal line and I also love that the website shows you the price of the dress + a video of a model walking in it. As I selected dresses to show her, I noticed some trends:

1. Frothy
I'm loving all the super-feminine, whispy details of these dresses! (above) If I was getting married today, I would totally rock this style, but I'm guessing these will be a little too "sweet" for my friend Stafford.

Unique necklines

2.  Unique necklines
Stafford specified that she doesn't want strapless, which is a good thing because so many dresses now are featuring straps! Check out the unique necklines on these awesome dresses.

Pockets

3. Pockets
Even without the pockets, these dresses are gorgeous, but the pockets do add a certain chicness, no? Overall, these were my #1 pick for Stafford based on body type and her preferences. I think the second one has her name written all over it!

Congrats Stafford! I'm so honored to be a part of your big day in November! Now we just need to work on finding cute bridesmaid dresses. ;-)

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Weary Traveler

I had a very full day yesterday. I had lunch with a couple girlfriends, headed to Izon Orlando to edit my Miami Fashion Week video (will be posted next soon, I'm so excited to share it with you guys!), then visited my friends at OPP for a clothing swap they hosted (I was too tired to shop at that point, so went home empty-handed). I also squeezed in a stop at TJ Maxx. *whew* Because it was hot, I subbed in black shorts and folded up the sleeves of my new cardigan (don't you love the pea green color!) but essentially this is what I wore! What is your go-to outfit for a full day of errands? (I usually wear gladiator flats but I gotta say I'm loving how comfy these wedges are!)

Occasion: Lunch with friend, video editing, clothing swap
Inspiration photo: Madewell.com
Cardigan: LOFT, $20
Shirt: TJ Maxx, $13
Necklace: H&M, $8
Jeans: Gap, $35
Shoes: Guess/DSW, $20
Watch: Michael Kors, Christmas present
Bracelets: Forever 21, $8

Flashback Friday: Utility Belt

[Click the photo to view it larger.] This is one of my favorite belts (Banana Republic, $30), and yesterday's outfit made me curious to see what other ways I've worn it! Florals are a recurring theme, as is the color olive. I also tend to pair this belt with the same H&M sandals because the colors go together, but I also recommend branching out and trying a lighter brown shoe with belts like this.

Styling tips: Use an elastic belt to cinch in a loose dress (like I did in outfit #3) or to keep a cardigan in place (like outfit #4). Also - I've seen this belt at tons of stores over the past few months including LOFT and Limited, but Banana Republic has an identical belt in stores right now!

Which look is your favorite?
