Today's Everyday Fashion: The Colorblock Skirt

Many of you asked for ideas on how to style this skirt when I first bought it this summer. My suggestion was that any brightly colored top would work, but I have yet to take my own advice! Inspired by the catalog photo, I reached for one of my favorite hues - electric blue. I added black and gold accessories to tie everything together and the end result is a work outfit that can be customized depending on your company's dress code, or even worn for a night out. What colors would you pair with this skirt?

Old Navy Runway Show

By the time you read this post I will be en route to NYC! I received a very cool opportunity with Old Navy to walk in their fashion show at Bryant Park this Friday. I'm a fish out of water at fashion events (I can't help it, I'm a tomboy), but this event seems really down-to-earth as I will be walking with a bunch of everyday women (love that). I'll be taking pictures of my outfits while in NYC and excited to share everything with you when I get back, and on Instagram as I go. If you live in New York, be sure to check out the invite above and come by and say hello! :-)

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Old Navy. Shop online or In Stores and find your perfect-fitting pair of The Rockstar skinny jeans at Old Navy.

Today's Everyday Fashion: Burgundy Jeans

I can't say enough good things about these burgundy jeans. I don't think I have ever bought pants or jeans from Target, but these were the exact color I was looking for, and they fit like a glove (I had to size up one size, and only in these jeans, not in the other Mossimo jeans and cords I tried on). Paired with my favorite navy polka dot top from a few years ago, I think this might be my new go-to look for fall! What are your favorite stores for jeans?

Jeans: Mossimo/Target, $23

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Pants

I love these pants to death, but let's face it: they are borderline Golden Girls territory (heart that show). Flats are a definite "no" (personal preference, but proceed with caution, I think flats with these pants make you appear shorter), and since the bottom is a slim fit, my inclination is a looser top. With those parameters in mind and a love for a yellow and green color combo, I arrived at this conclusion. A sunny work look, with a modern twist (via the silk camp shirt and pointy heels) fit for the tail end of summer. How would you style these pants?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Solange Style

I love to dabble in all kinds of styles, but super-preppy tops the list as one of my favorites. I dig this work look for that reason, and was inspired to put it together by flip-floping Solange's color palette and adding stripes (love her style, btw). I was also inspired to go on a hunt for some cognac pointy toe pumps (an item high on my wish list for fall), and shared some of my finds with you below. What shoes are on your wish list this fall?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Night of Joy

Last night I went to Night of Joy at Disney and this is what I wore! Comfort was top priority, so I paired my favorite light, light blue denim shorts with a dark gray Madonna t-shirt (I'm not necessarily a fan, I just like the design), and ankle boots with socks. I totally miscalculated the weather when I left the house though, because it was way hot the first few hours of riding rides, the kind of gross instant sweat where you feel like you are suffocating (thank you Florida). I was tempted to jump into every body of water I passed, and was wishing I had a breezy tank and sandals instead. Once the sun went down, temperatures got way better, and I was able to enjoy the concert (LeCrae, Third Day and MercyMe) without a bead of sweat. Really fun night and I can't wait to go back next year! What would you wear to a concert?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Ruffles

As you may recall from a recent shopping post, I ordered both the pink ruffle top I'm wearing, and the matching skirt on clearance from Target. I was considering wearing them together as a dress, but this old ivory ruffle skirt had a similar fit and looked cute with the top, so to be economical I went this route instead. This skirt is not all that practical for errands, but I like it for a casual dinner or lunch. Sophisticated but still in comfy flats - now that's what I'm talkin' about! Where would you wear this look?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Governor's Conference

Aliens invaded my camera and put a dark streak in my hair. (It doesn't really exist.)
I attended the Governor's Conference on Tourism for VISIT FLORIDA this week and this is what I wore! I'm very excited about the winter potential for this patterned dress - I think it will look great with brown boots and a navy jacket. I wanted to wear it for a more summery look first though, so I reached for an off-white belt and shoes. This dress is slightly big (it's a M), but the belt works wonders and is moving the waistband down a bit (I placed the belt just under the elastic so it would create a lower waistline). At the bottom I am sharing my "company shirt required" look - how I dressed up a company shirt for the conference (for two examples on how to dress up a work polo go here). Have you ever attended a conference for work? What did you wear?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Life Love Shopping

This is what I wore for an appearance on Life Love Shopping, a nationally syndicated show that aired on WE tv yesterday morning! (GO HERE to watch it.) I stumbled upon a plethora of colorful Calvin Klein sheaths at TJ Maxx in February (picture here), and chose this blue color. I don't usually buy dresses that need to be altered, but I made an exception because none of the sizes fit correctly, and a perfectly fitting work-appropriate sheath was a good investment considering my job (form-fitting bright colors look best on camera) and current closet (the majority of my dresses are not long enough for work). I felt comfortable in this look, and it kept my mind off what I was wearing so I could concentrate on dressing the models. :-) What is your go-to work dress?

Dress: Calvin Klein/TJ Maxx, $50 plus $25 alterations
Necklace: JcPenney, $15 (similar, similar)
Shoes: Colin Stuart c/o MJR Sales, $24 (similar, similar)
Watch: Michael Kors, family gift

Today's Everyday Fashion: Paper Dolls

In place of a regular outfit post today, I decided to pull these three outfit "flops" out for fun! I'm all for playing around in your closet to come up with new combinations, but the reality is that I can't always figure out how exactly to re-create something the first time around. (See this post: "If Fashion Mistakes are Wrong, I Don't Want to be Right") These are three outfits that were cute, but I wanted to go back and make changes to them to make them even better. Let's examine and see what things we want to change, shall we? (You can think of it like playing paper dolls!)

Outfit 1: The peplum in the inspiration photo is gorgeous! I like the top and skirt together in my outfit, but might ditch the yellow and red accessories for a simple black shoe and metallic necklace or earrings instead.

Outfit 2: My favorite of the three, and one of the first inspiration photos I ever saved (from J.Crew), I love the combination of the pea green cardigan and yellow necklace in my version. I like the outfit for a casual occasion but would switch to flat sandals or loafers and/or a darker brown belt.

Outfit 3: I love these three colors together, but J.Crew makes it look preppy while my look is way more of an '80s rockstar. Switching to a nude sandal or pump would help tone it down a lot.

So let's hear it - which outfit is your favorite or least favorite? What changes would you make to these looks?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Military Summer

Hope you guys had a great holiday weekend! I took full advantage of the perfect weather here in Orlando and spent the whole thing at the lake and pool. This outfit is the one time I got dressed, for a casual hang out on Sunday night. I wanted to wear the military trend, but a summer version to beat the heat. I originally tried my new Colin Stuart heels (pictured below) but they were a tad too dressy and didn't match the casual vibe I had going with my purse, so I switched to brown wedges instead (the heels would've looked great with a black clutch for a dressier occasion though). What shoes would you wear with this outfit?

ps. Catch me on national TV show Life Love Shopping talking about fall trends tomorrow morning on WE tv at  9:30 a.m. EST/8:30 CST/7:30 MST/6:30 PST.

My August Budget

Here's what I bought with my August budget. Mostly fall items, with a couple end-of-summer sale items found at a bargain:

1. Target mustard cords, $22. I think mustard cords are going to be a staple for me this fall/winter. Planning to try on a couple more pairs before I commit to these, but I really like this pair from Target.
2. Target burgundy jeans, $22. Burgundy is my favorite color for fall, I already want to wear these jeans non-stop.
3. American Eagle jeans, $25. I needed a good pair of dark wash skinnies to kick off fall, and these were the perfect fit and wash.
4. H&M cropped pants, $18. (similar) I wanted to add cropped work pants to my closet and loved this trendy print.
5. LOFT cropped pants, $25. Another pair of cropped pants, and a bit of a end-of-summer steal, but I'm also planning to wear these with fall colors.
6. Marshalls shirt, $13. It was all about the color with this shirt - I've been hunting for something in this exact shade of blue for over a year!
7. Target shirt, $13. An end-of-summer steal that I couldn't pass up. I love this print.
8. Forever 21 blazer, $25. I don't think I've ever bought a blazer from F21, but I was walking through the store and spotted this one on a mannequin. The fit is phenomenal and definitely looks more expensive than it is. It's technically yellow, but a very subdued tone that I think will look great fall colors.
9. Limited striped top, $31. I'm loving stripes, and this top will be another staple for me this fall.
10. Banana Republic leather bag, $17. I've been stalking this bag for over a month at my local store. They had tons left, so I knew the price would go way down. Wasn't expecting to get it this cheap though! The price was $39.95 and they are running a promo this week, so with the 40% coupon they handed me, plus a credit card reward, I got this leather bag for only $17.
11. Colin Stuart sandals in nude (pictured in black), $29. I spotted my favorite shoes on MJR Sales in nude (I have them in black, pictured) and immediately snapped them up!

Total = $240.  My budget is $250 per month. For more info read "How to Set a Clothing Budget."

September wish list

Here's what I'll be searching for in September:

1. Black leather jacket. (Victoria's Secret, $298) Hoping to find a black leather jacket with gold trimmings this winter on sale!
2. Tweed jacket. (H&M, $59 similar, similar, similar) I'm stalking this jacket at H&M right now, trying to find a store in my area with my size in stock.
3. Denim jacket. (Old Navy, $34.94) I swore I would never wear a denim jacket, but I'm rethinking that this fall. I love this one from Old Navy; it looks more expensive than it is.
4. Orange silk top. (Urban Outfitters, $69) Craving something bright orange to add to my closet.
5. Mustard sweater. (Banana Republic, $59.50) I love my mustard sweater so much I'm thinking about replacing it with this higher quality version.
6. Polka dot shirt. (Gap, $49.50) Keeping my eye on this shirt in hopes of catching it on sale later.
7. White shirtdress. (Gap, $59.50) Obsessed with this dress! Hoping to find it in the store this week so I can try it on.
8. Strappy brown heels. (Dillard's, $64.50) I want to add some brown shoes to my closet this fall, either a strappy pair like the ones pictured or some brown pointy toe pumps.

What were your great finds in August? What are you searching for in September?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Baby Blue

I've been hunting for a top in this exact shade of blue for over a year now. I finally found it, of all places, at Marshalls last week. I wish it were silk, and I also tried to find a similar option online for you but this t-shirt and this pricey blouse were it. I'll keep trying. :-) I love baby blue paired with orange-red, as seen on the runway (and in several other inspiration photos I have saved). This top would also work with a red-orange skirt, or pants when the weather cools off. Would you wear baby blue + orange red?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Two Shades of Gray

This was one of the first inspiration photos I ever saved, before I started blogging. I stumbled upon it again this week and realized that I finally have all the pieces in my closet to re-create it! I would totally rock this look around town, but to make it even better I might go with another shoe option like loafers or boots (or a more simple sandals like hers). How would you wear this outfit?

Today's Everyday Fashion: UCF Gold

Monday night I spoke at a UCF class on entrepreneurial marketing and this is what I wore. I wish I was exaggerating when I say I had 5 minutes to get dressed. This J.Crew photo popped into my head as I was searching through my closet, and I decided to put two different yellows together (UCF gold?). I added my new orange necklace (a birthday present from my friends Amanda and Natalie!), and shades of brown which gave it an autumn vibe. If you don't love yellow you could always try this trick with two different shades of green, blue, pink or red. Would you ever wear yellow with yellow?

How To Not Look Cheap

Leather handbag, leather shoes, cotton jeans with designer wash. // Inexpensive top. (original post)

One of the many reasons I started a fashion blog was to combat the belief that in order to be on a budget, you have to dress "cheap." My friends, I am here to tell you that there is a huge difference in dressing cheap, and dressing on a budget*. Here's how to spend the same amount of money, but make sure you never cross into cheap territory:

1. Shop brand names. You can find name brands for less at stores like DSW, Marshalls, Nordstrom Rack and thrift stores, that are higher quality than inexpensive brands at Target or Payless, but often cost the same. An occasional shoe from Payless is okay (more on that later), but for the most part, I recommend aiming for brand-names at a discount for the same price.

2. Shop quality materials. Did you know that Forever 21 sells 100% silk garments? Same with MJR Sales. You just have to look for it. I'm also a huge fan of real leather and I prefer jeans with more cotton and less Spandex (American Eagle can be a good spot for this), and not all polyester is created equal. In other words, choose wisely no matter what store you are shopping, and only go for genuine materials, or a great look-alike.

3. Mix high and low. At this point you might be saying "I don't have the budget to dress in high-end materials all the time!" Which is okay. Because it is all about a mix of high and low. A silk dress and leather shoes looks fine with an H&M necklace, but a polyester dress, leatherette shoes and an H&M necklace? Really hard to pull off without looking cheap! Mix in higher quality pieces with your lower quality pieces when you get dressed.

4. Diversify your shopping. How you are able to create high-low outfits is by diversifying what stores you shop at. Instead of only shopping stores with questionable quality you should also shop for brands with better quality so you can mix them together. Hunt the sales at Banana, thrift stores or discount stores like TJ Maxx, paying close attention to quality. (Read this post to learn how to save money at Banana and similar stores.)
Silk top. leather handbag, leather shoes. // Inexpensive pants. (original post)
5. Avoid the junior's section. I go into detail about the pros and cons of the junior's section in this post, but buyer beware - the prices are lower, but so is the quality. I would again recommend diversifying where you shop and getting a mix of both junior's and ladies clothing. Don't solely shop junior's if you are 21 or older.

6. Invest in work attire. If you work in an office, the one area of your closet you should be most concerned about is your work clothes (save the disposable fashion for weekends!). I made the mistake of buying tons of collared shirts from H&M right out of college. I spent the first year of work looking cheap, which was silly because I could've spent the same amount for sale shirts that were higher quality at Express (my Express collared shirts are 6 years old and still look great). Insist on higher quality for your work attire. (I also recommend quality handbags and shoes as good pieces to invest in.)

7. Purge worn out items. Jewelry that is tarnished, shoes that are majorly scuffed, shirts that are showing wear and tear - retire them to be worn as pajamas, but be sure to purge them from your daily rotation as soon as you can find a suitable replacement.

8. Fit is key. Last but not least is fit. You can pull of a cheap dress if the fit is phenomenal (tailoring might be a good idea in this case). You can also make an expensive dress look cheap if the fit is not right. So pay close attention to fit, and you will be on your way to looking fab on a budget in no time.

9. Go for longevity. Items that are higher quality and you can wear for years ultimately cost less, because you don't have to pay to replace them over and over again.

What are your tips for shopping on a budget, without looking like you are on a budget?
Silk top, leather shoes, expensive necklace. // Inexpensive shorts, handbag. (original post)

*Please note: these tips are in no way meant to judge others and how cheap they may or may not be dressing. (I'm not cool with that, see #9 in my About section.) They are merely tips to use for yourself, if you determine that you would like to change your own personal style. I struggled with finding quality clothes on a shoestring budget when I graduated from college and these are tips that I wish someone would have shared with me. I hope you enjoy! :-)

Tips for each category:

  1. Handbags - If you only have enough money to invest in one area of your closet, I would suggest one quality handbag for daytime. You will wear it every single day, it is technically work attire since you carry it to/from the office, and lesser quality bags are really easy to spot. I don't invest in clutches, however, since I use them less often, and a smaller size is harder to spot bad quality.
  2. Shoes - Shoes are important to your comfort and the health of your body, so this would definitely be another important place to invest. I recommend DSW, Marshalls, MJR Sales, Ross, Nordstrom Rack for quality shoes for less.
  3. Belts - My favorite spot for leather belts is H&M (they are less than $20), followed closely by Gap. If it is a skinny belt, then leather is not a concern (again, because it is smaller).
  4. Jewelry - I personally like a mix of high and low jewelry. The high jewelry is good for classic pieces, and the low is great for adding some fun to your closet. Your signature jewelry like a watch, rings, or bracelets that you wear every single day are generally more important to splurge on than big, statement pieces (unless it is for your wedding or another big occasion).
  5. Jeans - Colored jeans are hard to determine what brand they are, so I buy them everywhere, often from the juniors department. Blue denim is much easier to detect quality. Designer denim from discount stores like Filene's Basement is the best option if you can find it, but use a discerning eye at places like Gap or American Eagle and you can often find really amazing washes that look designer there as well (see my first photo up top for an example).
  6. Blazers - My closet is a half and half mix of quality and inexpensive blazers. The classics like black and navy are high quality and I paid a lot for them. The trendy ones like neon pink and striped, I got at stores like H&M and F21. Fit is the most important thing with blazers though - just make sure it fits you perfect and it will look more expensive than it really is.
  7. Tops - My tops are probably a 70/30 mix. 70% are inexpensive (and fairly trendy), while 30% are pure silk and classics that I plan to hold onto forever. I rotate the trendy pieces and don't mind that they are lower quality, especially when paired with designer denim and a leather bag.

Today's Everyday Fashion: Ankle Pants

I have officially caught cropped work pant fever. I tried on a bunch at the mall last week (see below for sizing info and reviews). I couldn't resist this fun printed pair from H&M, and I also bought the green ones from LOFT below. I paired my new pants with an old (5+ years) shirt, plus my favorite heels from last year. Can't wait to hear what you guys think of this trend. I have been bored to tears by "regular" work pants for years, but these pants are fun! Do you wear cropped pants? Have you tried printed pants yet, or only solids?

Shirt: Banana Republic, $50 (similar, similar)
Pants: H&M, $18 (almost identical, similar)
Shoes: Restricted/Endless, $40 (similar)
Purse: Emma Fox c/o Ross, $59
Earrings: Orlando boutique (similar)
Watch: Michael Kors, family gift
Rings: My Stella & Dot website $69 and $49
Bracelets: My Stella & Dot website $59 and $59 and $34 and $32

I tried on all of these pants.

1. LOFT pants, $49.99.
Size 0, low rise. I also bought these! They were my favorite fit by far, I love the green color and I got them for only $25 in the store.
2. Gap pants, $49.95.
Size 2, mid rise. These are great basic work pants, I really like the slightly wooly texture. They fit well in my usual size, but the rise was in a weird place - not high enough to be chic high-waisted pants, not low enough that I would want to tuck something in, so I passed for now.
3. Old Navy pants, $25.
Size 2, high rise. These were only $13 in the store. They fit exactly the same as the H&M ones, but I preferred the darker print.
4. H&M pants, $18.
Size 4*, high rise. (H&M is European sizing and doesn't offer online shopping in the U.S.) These are the pants I'm wearing in today's post. I love the print and they fit perfect through the thighs and butt. They are way too loose in the waist though. I'm guessing that my waist to hip ratio is not suited for this style of pant, but a belt tightens the waist and solves the problem. *I'm wearing a 6 in the picture, but wound up exchanging these for a size 4, which solved the loose waist issue!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Shopping Update

I wore this to church and errands yesterday.
After a frenzy of online browsing last week (as seen in this post), I headed to the mall to check some things out in person! The Limited striped shirt I'm wearing was on my wish list, and although I was initially a tad disappointed (the quality wasn't as high as I thought and I also didn't realize the stripes were black), I decided I liked it enough to keep it anyway. The destroyed American Eagle jeans I originally had my eye on were not what I was envisioning (too much Spandex - I prefer thick cotton denim). But these jeans were absolutely perfect! The wash is what I would expect from designer jeans, fingers crossed that they keep their color. (I would also recommend sizing down if you order them. I'm usually between sizes at American Eagle - a size 4 is slightly too big, a size 2 is too small, but the size 2 fit perfect, no muffin top.)

This look also got me dreaming about owning my first black handbag, because I would've loved to wear one with this outfit. A few I am drooling over are below, and my plan is to scour TJ Maxx/Nordstrom Rack/etc. for a similar leather bag for less this winter. What color handbag would you wear with this outfit?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Boho

I've had this dress all summer, but never got around to posting a picture of it until now. It's been on constant rotation lately as I've been craving more of a boho look (it's an easy pairing for my au natural wavy hair). I wore it to a casual dinner with flats a few weeks ago, and this weekend as pictured for an early dinner and drinks. The hi-lo skirt may look slightly funny from the front, but I love the extra coverage it provides the bum. ;-) Do you ever wear outfits with a bohemian vibe?
