I was the Friday Finale speaker at Go Blog Social conference in Kansas City last week and this is what I wore! ! shared my personal lemonade from lemons story and how I became a full-time blogger in a tough situation. The eighty or so ladies in attendance were fabulous, and I was so excited to get to meet and take a picture with almost all of them afterwards. I plan to share my speech by either video or a written article soon, but in the meantime, this is what I wore. I bought this dress in the after Christmas sales for a steal ($24!) and am just now getting around to wearing it. It needed to be altered and I got it back from the tailor just in time for the conference. White and nude is one of my favorite color palettes so this is consequently one of my favorite outfits. How would you style a neutral sheath?

These pictures were taken at kind of a funny angle. I only had one day in Orlando in between travel, and of course it rained all day long. It was too dark to take pictures inside, and so I was huddled up underneath an overhang. I wanted to photograph my new crochet skirt (I've been talking about buying one for months!), and my new cognac heels. Taking pictures is so helpful to see how things look on, and decide if I want to keep something or not - in this case, it's a yes! I recommend this method for anyone though - especially if you want to see how a new shape of pants or a skirt looks on you. Chambray and crochet are one of my favorite combinations and I can't wait to wear this outfit. With heels for a dinner date, or flat sandals (bottom picture) for errands. Would you wear crochet and chambray?

I wore the top outfit to the airport this week, and the bottom picture is from vacation in Roatan last week. Clearly, I have been wearing fedoras a lot lately! On the beach they provide extra sun coverage, on a boat they keep your hair in tact, and in airports, well, I just like them in airports. I feel incognito and they are fun way to dress up a casual outfit. Are fedoras easy to pull off where you live? Would you wear one?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Roatan Travel Guide

Screen shot 2013-08-01 at 11.13.18 PM.png

These shorts arrived just in time for Roatan! My friend Meg and her sister were tie-dying 4th of July weekend in Omaha and I was so jealous of Meg's rainbow shorts, that she made me a pair and surprised me for my birthday. :-) I think they did an amazing job, and pairing them with more color like a neon tank and sandals felt right. I don't love the clutch with it, but I needed to carry my stuff in something and it was the best choice of what I packed.

Also, I've had so many questions about Roatan, I decided to put together a little travel guide, below! You may be wondering why I went and the answer is easy: there is nothing I love more than snorkeling, and Roatan is home to the world's second largest coral reef. I can't explain the level of happiness my brain reaches, there is just no other feeling like it. I can stay out there for hours, and I take my own equipment with me wherever I travel. Overall I like to call Roatan paradise, but without many of the comforts of home. See below for a full guide of what to expect!

Tank: Gap, $7
Shorts: Old Navy with custom tie dye, birthday present! (similar, similar)
Shoes: Old Navy, $10

West Bay, Roatan

West Bay, Roatan

Overall: I first visited the small island in the Honduras as part of a Carnival Cruise several years ago. Since then, the island's tourism has increased significantly, but Roatan has not lost any of its authentic charm. In Roatan, expect to be surrounded by jungle, with no air conditioning, sand fleas (bring bug spray), non-potable water, and plenty of language barriers (if your Spanish is as rusty as mine!). West Bay is one of the prettiest beaches I've seen, and we did plenty of beach lounging, but if you want that kind of vacation I might recommend the Bahamas or St. Thomas (just to avoid the sand fleas alone). If, however, you want snorkeling and/or scuba diving, then Roatan is where you should go. That's what brought me there, and what will keep bringing people back for many years to come!

Lodging: There is so much island to explore, but the two main areas for tourists are West Bay and West End. If you find lodging anywhere near these two areas you are good to go, as water taxis ($3 per person per ride, bring small bills) are easy to catch and will transport you in between the two. West Bay is an amazing beach with snorkeling and a bunch of resorts, and West End has restaurants, dive companies, souvenir and convenience stores, and night life (which means laid back live music in the heat).

We stayed at Villa Delfin, which is a private condo I found listed on Trip Advisor. It's located halfway between West End and West Bay, and we liked the location and overall you can't beat the value. One night at the Ritz = a whole week in Roatan, and the condos are really nice. I missed not having a concierge to help plan excursions though. The language barrier and not being able to find prices online made it challenging to plan, and the owners were grumpy and not interested in helping. I also considered Las Rocas Dive Resort in West Bay and would probably book that on my next trip.

Food: We had a seafood feast fit for kings at Lighthouse in West End, and we ate at Argentinian Grill in West Bay twice it was so good. I also highly recommend Monkey Island Cafe in West End. Or try cooking yourself - prices at the grocery store were good, and a local butcher gave us four lobster tails for $10.

Snorkeling:  There are so many dive shops all over the island, but we went rogue with the locals and hired random water taxis along West Bay to take us snorkeling and on a half-day fishing trip. It's more affordable that way, but please be careful if you do this and don't take valuables with you. One of our "guides" abandoned us while we were snorkeling, and returned after we were already halfway back to shore and exhausted (we didn't think he was coming back).

We snorkeled at: 1. Blue Channel - by far my favorite, we snorkeled this three times. You will need a boat to take you, but it's not far and located near West End. It's a very shallow reef with unbelievable amounts of fish and huge coral formations. Amazing! 2. Spooky Channel - way out there located near Anothony's Key, and not for beginners. Like the name suggests, it is way spooky. There is shallow coral, with huge cracks in between of total darkness. I don't even want to know what was down there. 3. West Bay - you can access this reef from the beach, so we snorkeled it three times as well. The reef is awesome, just not nearly as good as Blue Channel.

I really enjoyed Roatan! If you have tips, please share them in the comments section, or leave suggestions for your favorite places to travel!

This is what I wore for my birthday dinner in Orlando! There is something so fun about being a girl and wearing a new dress and shoes, especially on your birthday. This dress won me over instantly with the mint color, bandage-style material and full skirt. I didn't spend tons of time shopping - this was the first dress I ordered and tried on. I love all the options below though (esp. 1 and 2), and overall I'm a fan of going all out on your birthday, even if it falls on a Tuesday. :-) Which option below would you choose?

Necklace: My Stella & Dot, $118

Today's Everyday Fashion: Pleated Shorts

I came across this inspiration picture on People StyleWatch yesterday. The reader comments were almost all anti-pleated shorts, but personally, I'm a fan! I think pleats add a little sophistication, and while finding a good fit is important, the right pair can definitely look cute. I love Olivia's outfit (maybe with a different belt?) and J.Lo's fit is a little off but I like the overall idea on her. What's your take on pleated shorts - yay or nay?

This is what I wore for air travel yesterday! (And for relishing our last lazy moments on the porch.)  I love wearing layers on a plane. I tend to get chilly, so a lightweight hoodie was just the ticket, and the tank underneath was great for hotter moments. Below are some more hoodies I would snuggle up with during travel or on a rainy day. Do you wear hoodies very often? For what occasions?

Here's another outfit from Roatan! I wore this to dinner in the West End. This is one of my all-time favorite dresses. I bought it in March (post here) and I've worn it three times (dinner in Orlando, Key West and now in Roatan), but this is the first time I've taken pictures of it. Would you wear an embroidered dress? Which one below is your favorite for your body type?

It feels so good to relax this week in Roatan and not give much thought to what I'm wearing! I packed this black maxi (more like a midi on me) not having a set plan for it. Our upstairs neighbors offered to make us dinner (they are also from Orlando!), and this felt like the perfect comfy thing to throw on. I added a necklace (packed it for a different outfit) and the gold flip flops I usually wear to the beach/pool. I love a black maxi because they are comfy as pajamas, and yet can be worn so many ways. You can dress one up for a casual wedding, wear it for dinner, to run errands, or even as a swim cover up. How would you wear a black maxi?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Stripe Infraction

Screen shot 2013-07-22 at 11.11.20 PM.png

I plead guilty to wearing stripes way too much lately, and specifically this shirt! I love today's baby blue and mustard combo based on the inspiration, and in general I'm all for wearing things repeatedly so that beautiful clothes don't go to waste. But I'm in a creative rut the size of the Grand Canyon lately and the stripes thing just has to stop. (Yep, I traded my bubble necklaces addiction for a stripes addiction.) What items do you find yourself repeating (too) often?

Some good news though:  I arrived in Roatan last night for vacation. Because of the aforementioned rut I thought this would be the worst time ever to take a vacation, but I'm already experiencing the opposite. Time off to recharge is exactly what the doctor ordered. I'll be sharing vacation outfits in bits and pieces over the next week - some days I might skip posts altogether, and I really wish I had been more organized and set up guest bloggers like the past two years, but things have been way too hectic lately (my apologies). I'm already stewing up some pretty big ideas though that I think will be just the thing to kick butt when I return. For now, from Roatan, have a great week. :-)

Today's Everyday Fashion: Striped Peplum x 2

Screen shot 2013-07-22 at 2.45.34 AM.png

This is what I wore Saturday night for dinner. A striped peplum top, black skinnies, white ankle strap shoes, and my birthday present - a white leather purse! I featured this purse in a post a couple months ago and when I spotted it at Macy's huge sale it was love at first sight (I passed it along via a little birdie that it would make a good birthday present). The second outfit was originally posted a couple months ago (here), and I like the contrast between the two outfits of casual/work and also black/brown so I decided to post it again. Which version do you like best?

The first thing that came to mind when I found these sweaters? Iconic Tory Burch tunics (examples below). The second thing? A chocolate Hostess Cup Cake. I figured a competing tribal pattern could help offset the pastry connection, and I'm planning to wear the top outfit with the sandals from bottom outfit for air travel next week (the destination is tropical).

The second outfit is the same tunic in yellow. I snapped this picture a few weeks ago as I was headed out for shopping and errands in Orlando. Do you ever buy multiple colors in items you love?  Which outfit do you like better?

**Some of these items may look familiar from last month's budget post here

I love doing these posts every month - they keep me accountable for staying within my budget, it's fun to look back on what I bought, and to plan future purchases. The result of this month's budget is my ideal casual Florida summer wardrobe -- plenty of color with neutral shoes!

These pieces will get tons of use here in Florida, but looking forward I have travel in colder states planned and I'm missing some staple pieces for those trips. I'm determined to limit summer purchases (despite the current high temps) and only buy pieces that will do double-duty for fall going forward. My wish list:

- The LOFT neutrals featured in this post.
 - Ankle strap shoes in cognac and black. Check out what's in my shopping cart, below.
 - The perfect dark wash skinny jeans. My current favorites are from H&M and the color is fading fast. I'm looking to invest in a designer pair that will withstand the test of time.
 - A nude or cognac leather clutch. (Surprisingly hard to find!)
 - An updated trench coat.
 - Silk tops.

What's on your fall wish list?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Coral Combos

Inspiration: LOFT

Screen shot 2013-07-18 at 11.00.25 PM.png

Today post is two coral combos - one for work, one for weekend. I love the inspiration photo, but both of my interpretations are what I call "good enough" outfits. As a perfectionist, it would be ideal if every outfit was a perfect 10, but let's be real - does anyone ever love 100% of what they wear? A million factors can come into play when you are getting dressed - a recent weight loss or gain means nothing fits, haven't shopped in ages syndrome, or you just aren't feeling creative, to name a few. But ultimately you have to leave the house in something - so when is good enough good enough? On really stressful days I will repeat a past outfit I loved, or a simple white top and solid bottoms. But it's the gray area in between that is most difficult to navigate in my opinion. Sometimes an outfit is just a 7 out of 10 and you have to decide whether or not you are walking out of the house in it. How do you decide what is "good enough"? Are you a perfect 10 or bust, or is there a gray area when getting dressed?

For today's shopping picks I decided to torture myself with a little drool-fest over at J.Crew Factory. :-) It may not be the same quality as retail J.Crew, but it's a great solution for fashionistas on a budget like me who love J.Crew's style, and certain items like the blazers on the bottom you can hardly tell the difference. I've always loved Kim's take on a hot pink blazer: paired with jeans on the same side of the color wheel, and then everything else is neutral. You can try the same with what you already have in your closet, such as a cobalt blazer with baby blue jeans, emerald blazer with mint jeans, or hot pink blazer with a lighter shade of pink, like I've done in my re-creation.

And continuing the theme of shopping new/different stores, today's shopping picks below are from C. Wonder, a delightfully preppy store that feels like a mix of Banana and LOFT. Have you ever shopped C. Wonder?

Do you ever feel like you're living in the movie Groundhog Day? Like every day you wake up and it's the same schedule, the same tasks, etc. I've been feeling like that so much with clothes lately! Everything feels familiar at the mall, and my closet feels like one huge repeat. Make no mistake - I am incredibly grateful to have a closet full of so many beautiful things - I just wish I felt capable of enjoying them like I should.

I'm planning another closet clean-out and a huge clothing sale of more than 100 items soon. And I decided to expand my horizons regarding what stores I shop at, so today's picks are from ASOS. I've only ever placed one order from the UK's version of F21/Urban, but I'm keeping an eye out for a future second try, and since they offer free shipping in both directions it's relatively risk-free.

As for today's look? It's my favorite striped shirt again, this time in a mix of sweet neutrals that I would love to wear to the office if I worked in one. (See more striped looks in this post.) What are your tips and tricks for making your closet feel new again?

I love mixing pink and orange together, and this Banana ad was the perfect inspiration for wearing an old pink/orange t-shirt in a new way. Also, my hunt for the best new arrivals continues, with some favorites from The Limited below (planning to try on the chambray blazer and both pants).  What clothing items are you currently on the hunt for?  Let me know and I'll post some options for you in an upcoming post!

When I shop, I usually go alone. It's quick, to the point, and I can get down to business. :-) But from time to time it's fun to go with friends - you get real-time feedback in the dressing room, and you visit stores you might not normally go in. That was the case this week with Anthropologie - a store I don't usually stop by because of the price tag. I saw so much cute stuff though, I decided to share some of my favorites below (I stuck to pieces under $150 - the sale stalking begins). Do you prefer to shop alone or with others?

About today's look: Fergie is headed on a safari (or, the Miami airport) and I want to go too! I wore my version for a solo shopping trip about a week ago, but like her outfit even better.
