Today's Everyday Fashion: Holiday Blues

Inspiration: Piperlime

This photo was in my inbox last week and it instantly caught my eye. I love the idea of mixing navy and cobalt blue with black and sequins for a festive holiday look. Tomorrow I'm posting a bold red and green Christmas look, and after that a couple of cozy sweaters for lounging. What kind of holiday attire is your favorite -  sequins, red + green, cozy sweaters or something else?

Speaking of blue and sequins, I tried on this Tracy Reese top at Target yesterday - it's currently 50% off!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Basic Black

Inspiration: FabSugar

Basic black is not something you will generally find me wearing. However, when black is mixed with interesting textures (leather, gold buckles), and yummy neutrals (beige, olive, taupe), then I'm a huge fan. I love Kate Moss' outfit and was excited to give it a try with my own clothes. Speaking of basic black, I'm on the hunt for my first black handbag; read about my shopping adventures below. How do you wear black?

I've been on the hunt for my first black handbag for months. I don't want to pay full price, but I also don't have time to scour TJ Maxx and the like. So I've been keeping an eye out for coupons - Macy's just had Friends & Family (25% off everything) a few weeks ago, and Piperlime recently had two coupons (20% and 15%, respectively), all of which worked on designer bags. Here's what I bought and considered!

1. Santa tells me this bag might be under the tree this year! Piperlime had a 15% off coupon this week.
2. This one is my absolute favorite, but it's too expensive, even with a coupon.
3. I ordred this purse with a 20% off Piperlime coupon a couple weeks ago, thinking it was much larger. Turns out it's tiny - smaller than most of my clutches.
4. I also considered this Michael Kors bag - love it.
5. I randomly stumbled upon this beauty during my online search and had to share.

Which handbag do you like best?

Win $100 to H.C.B. Boutique! [now closed]

Peplum top $34 / blue jeans $36 / purse $48 / necklace $26 / shoes $30
Peplum top $34 / black jeans $42 / necklace $22 / shoes $30

I'm so excited to introduce H.C.B. Boutique to you guys today! Short for Hilary Caroline Boutique, the owner (that's Hilary) opened her online store in summer 2012. Everything I'm wearing I borrowed from Hilary for a little try-on session, and will be sending back (except for the ankle boots... might have to hold onto those!) You guys are in for a real treat though - one lucky reader will win a $100 gift card to H.C.B. Boutique, and everyone gets 20% off before 12/22 with code "HappyHolidays." To enter the giveaway:

1. Stay in touch with H.C.B. Boutique by "liking" their Facebook page.
2. Leave a comment on today's post.

A winner will be selected on 12/26. U.S. residents only. Good luck!

Above: I would be more than happy to add peplum tops like these in every color to my closet! They are so festive for the holidays, and are super-comfy with their soft, stretchy material. Consider sizing up; the small (pictured) fit snug.

Peplum top $30 / blue jeans $36 / necklace $22 / purse $42 / shoes $30
Striped top $34 / black jeans $42 / necklace $26 / purse $48 / shoes $30
Lace top $28 / blue jeans $36 / shoes $30

I'm equally obsessed with the sleeveless version of this peplum top, and H.B.C. stocks tons of other cute tops like this striped silky top and crochet lace top. I'm also a huge fan of both pairs of denim I tried - both the blue and black skinnies fit like a dream (and ran true to size).

Multicolor sweater $42 / blue jeans $36 / boots $54
Aztec sweater $40 / black jeans $42 / boots $54
The outfit on the right might be my favorite of the whole bunch, I love the sweater! I also really dig the pattern on the left sweater, although I'm convinced I look silly in crop-tops. ;-) Sweater on the left also fits snug in the arms/elbows, so consider sizing up.

High low dress $44 / necklace $22 / purse $42 / boots $54
Pattern dress $34 / necklace $26 / purse $48 / shoes $30
Maxi dress $42 / necklace $22 / shoes $30

You will find dresses galore at H.C.B. Boutique - my favorite is the high-low dress on the left, I love the boho vibe and can see myself wearing it for both dinner and errands. The middle print looks great with cognac and turquoise and would also work with boots and leggings (I would size up because of length). The far right dress is a super-comfy option that works with sandals on the beach, or heels for the holidays.

Which outfit or clothing item is your favorite?

This post is brought to you by H.C.B. Boutique. As always all opinions, reviews and editorial decisions are my own.

Congrats to our winner!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Tie Dye

I snapped these pictures on my way out the door on Saturday. I had dinner with one of my dearest friends, followed by two holiday parties. I decided to bust out my new tie-dye skinnies for the occasion, and kept the rest of the look fairly simple. They were super-fun to wear and I'm already brainstorming different ways I can wear them for another night out. Would you wear tie dye jeans?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Hope

Inspiration: B. Jones Style

I watched in horror as news of the killings in Newtown, CT was released on Friday. It's hard to concentrate on clothes at a time like this, but I know from going through my own personal tragedies that an escape into fashion can be welcome. It's why we love the drama and fantasy. So today I present an outfit idea - a look with my new plaid blazer. Nothing earth-shattering, but I hope it gives someone an easy outfit idea, or just makes someone smile today. Would you wear a plaid blazer? How would you wear it?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Easy Does It

I love my new navy baseball t-shirt, and I love my new camo skinnies, and I want to wear both non-stop. So it makes perfect sense to pair them together! :-) I wore the top outfit for a roadtrip to Tampa on Tuesday, and the bottom is an attempt to dress it up for a dinner or another occasion. I like the idea of wearing these boyish pieces with something more feminine like a statement necklace and/or heels, although I might try it with darker heels next time (like these). Which look is more your style?

Navy baseball tee: Forever 21, $10
Camo skinnies: Zara, $63 (similar)
Boots: c/o Chinese Laundry, $150 (10% off with code AF10SHOE)

Bottom necklace: My Stella & Dot website, $68

Rings: My Stella & Dot website $69 and $39
Bracelets: My Stella & Dot website $59 and $59 and $79

Also... should I keep this dress? I got it for 50% off on Black Friday, and I'm wanting more sheath dresses that are work-appropriate and good for TV segments. I like that this one is "different" but I also feel like I might tire of the print after one wear. Would you keep it?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Aztec Cardi

One of my favorite by-products of posting what's on my wish list is how helpful you guys are with shopping leads! About a month ago I posted my November wish list and as it turned out, Amour Boutique was selling the exact same Aztec cardigan I was drooling over (and they were selling it for way less - take note ladies). It arrived right before my trip to Kansas and I wore it on the plane that very same day, and at least three times since then. I love this style of sweater because it's incredibly comfortable but also unique and stylish. I also plan on pairing it with purple or mint skinnies, and an orange or turquoise shirt. Have you tried an aztec cardigan yet?

My October/November Budget

Life has been hectic lately which means less time for shopping! It's almost two weeks into December already, and I'm still not 100% sure if this is my final October/November budget. I have shared what I found over the past two months as I found it (see previous shopping posts here, here, and here), but this is an almost-final account of how I actually wound up spending my budget for October/November!

1. H&M plaid blazer, $15 (similar, similar) - This was on sale for $15, originally $40. I try to stick to my wish list while shopping, but also be flexible when I find good deals like this that are too good to pass up.
2. Banana Republic cardigan, $19 (similar) - I've been hunting for a burgundy cardigan for a couple months and this one was on clearance for only $19. Score!
3. Banana Republic chain print blouse, $40 (similar) - I had been drooling over this top (and the Michael Kors version - see "similar"), found it on clearance in early October.
4. LOFT white top, $27- A Black Friday find that is a great staple piece and I've already been wearing it non-stop.
5. Limited orange red top, $16 - Another Black Friday find, I'm unsure if I'm keeping it. It's a great staple but I haven't worn it yet and usually if I don't wear an items in 30 days, I return it.
6. Gap dress, $25- Sheath dresses for work have been high on my wish list, and I love the color and price on this one. I found it while I was in North Dakota in October.
7. Zara camo skinnies, $63 (similar) - My trendy splurge this month. I wanted camo pants badly enough that I decided to drop $63 on them!
8. Limited ivory jeans, $37 - Ivory skinnies were a high on my wish list for a few months, and I finally found the perfect pair on Black Friday.
9. Limited neon jeans, $15 - This was another sale purchase that was not on my wish list, but was too good to pass up. I have shorts in a similar color so I can wear those same outfits on colder days now.
10. Limited sequin clutch, $15 - A sparkly clutch to use for NYE and holiday parties was on my list and this one looks more expensive than it is.
11. Victoria's Secret leather jacket, $150 - This jacket was $257 total. I took money out of my September, October, and November budgets to cover the cost. It's now paid in full.
12. Forever 21 baseball tee, $10 - I included this in a recent shopping post and had to have it so I ordered it online.
13. Forever 21 pink polka dot top, $18 - I passed through Forever 21 on my way out of the mall and saw this top. I've been wanting a polka dot collared top and I like that this one is light pink and sheer.
14. H&M vneck sweater, $15 (similar) - I've had several H&M vnecks for years and still wear them. I decided to add this heathered brown color to the mix, and it's great for casual occasions like four-wheeling with my nephews while I was in Kansas.
15. TJ Maxx shirt, $15 (similar, similar, similar) - I've been wanting a color-blocked shirt this style since this summer, and finally bit the bullet.

Grand total = $250 per month (with a little to spare)

Also: here are a few recent purchases that I'm mulling over for December. My wish list is currently mint skinnies (I think I've tried on 20 pairs at this point), a black leather purse, sparkle heels for NYE, dark brown pumps and more work dresses.

1. Express shirt, $32 - I scored this deal on Black Friday with a c/o gift card. I'm in love with this top.
2. Express skirt, $30 - Another Black Friday deal with a c/o gift card. I've been eyeing this skirt for months.
3. Limited cardigan, $40 - I'm considering keeping this for my December budget!
4. Limited dress, $50 - I am looking for more sheath-type work dresses and I love how fun and yet professional this one is. Still deciding if I'm keeping it for December.

What are deals have you scored lately? What's on your wish list for December?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Kate Spade

Inspiration: Kate Spade

Head-to-toe color is my go-to in the summer and I've been missing it. I wanted to figure out a way to rock fun colors in the winter, so I gave this inspiration photo from Kate Spade a try with my red cords. Kate Spade is a Jayhawk and grew up in Kansas like me, so a bunch of cheerful colors inspired by a fellow Jayhawk is pretty much my favorite thing ever. Would you wear head-to-toe color in the winter?

Also, an update on NYE dresses from my last post. I decided to keep shopping - the all-sequin option is too big (I'm worried about the top falling down), and the other is an empire waist, which is not my favorite shape to wear. I loved both for different reasons, but I'm looking for the perfect dress so I decided to keep searching. Someone mentioned Rent the Runway over the weekend, and a lightbulb went off. I've never tried it before, but NYE seems like the perfect time to rent since I won't be repeating a dress quite this extravagant, and they offered to let me try it out and share my experience with you. I reserved the two dresses below and they will arrive 12/28. Have you ever rented a dress? Which one is your favorite?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Light Pink Polka Dots

Exploring my options! (Shirt is light pink.)

Believe it or not, this look started with a J.Crew inspiration photo involving emerald jeans and leopard shoes. When I tried it with my clothes, it looked way too busy, so I switched the bottom to plain black jeans (my favorite), and also blue jeans with black or brown shoes. I love taking one idea and seeing how many different options you have, and then choosing the best. Which look is your favorite?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Holiday Party

I love red and sequins together for the holidays! (See how I wore it last year on Christmas Eve.) For a holiday party last night, I achieved this combo by pairing an old red dress with two recent Black Friday purchases - a sequin cardigan and purse - to make it feel new again. This dress is also a great example of making a cheaper dress look more expensive with altering. I bought it one size bigger from Forever 21 so it would be longer, and had it altered to fit a couple years ago. Are you a fan of red + sparkles for holiday? What are your favorite holiday colors/textures?

Cardigan: Limited, $40 -  It was warm so I didn't need the cardigan; I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it!

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Office Party

The challenge: style this Limited sequin tee for an office party. It comes in six colors; I was given black and asked to create an office party look for Limited's Facebook page. I wanted to cover up my arms, and I didn't want a jacket or a cardigan to hide the sequins. A thin, almost-sheer blouse worn underneath was my solution, and the colorblocking details on the sleeves and cap-toe pumps give it a "tuxedo" vibe. Add one sparkly pencil skirt that's long enough for the office, and you are ready to celebrate with your co-workers in style! How would you wear this sequin tee? Which skirt below is your favorite?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Accent Color

Inspiration: Refinery29

Turquoise = always a favorite, and possibly the best accent color ever. I love wearing black and brown together, and turquoise makes them work oh-so-well in both the inspiration outfit and my outfit. Also, I want her sequin sweater. And in my head I thought my pants were the same color as hers. My mustard jeans might be a better match, but these camel pants haven't been worn lately and sometimes a more toned-down outfit just hits the spot. Do you ever wear turquoise as an accent color?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Dress Pants

Inspiration: Refinery29

Dress pants are not my favorite. When I worked in an office in Boston, I would wear jeans during cold weather whenever humanly possible. That's why this inspiration photo caught my eye - because she makes dress pants look so cute! I tried my own blend of neutrals and textured winter fabrics with brown wool pants (see how I wore them last year), a navy wool jacket, gray sweater and cognac shoes and belt. I love finding a way to wear dress pants that feels sophisticated and fun at the same time. How do you wear dress pants?

I skipped a post this weekend so today I'm bringing you two outfits. ;-) Both contain the ivory skinnies I scored on Black Friday. White jeans have been my favorite staple for many summers, so I'm not sure why I waited so long to buy an ivory pair for winter! They look great with boots, aren't breaking the "no white" rule, and yet they add a certain lightness to the usual somber winter colors. Which outfit is more your style? Would you wear ivory jeans in the winter?

Today's Everyday Fashion: On Repeat

Lately I've had the same handful of items on repeat. I can't stop wearing this burgundy cardigan and fringe necklace, my olive military jacket, and the same 3-4 pairs of shoes including the ones in today's post. I think this is largely the reason I feel like I'm in a "style rut" so I've challenged myself to dig deep and find some things I haven't worn in awhile (my closet could use a good deep-cleaning anyway!). What items do you find yourself wearing over and over again?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Military Influence

Inspiration: All the Pretty Birds

Yesterday's outfit was camo skinnies, today's is an olive military jacket, and I've always been a sucker for a navy peacoat. It's safe to say that I'm a big fan of clothes with a military influence! But it was recently brought to my attention that wearing camo can be offensive to our armed forces. Which totally bummed me out, because I have the utmost respect for those men and women in service and I sincerely hope I didn't upset anyone. I had never heard this before about camo, so I asked my Twitter readers for more information:

"From my husband - military Vet- wearing military clothing is fine. Only the patches for rank and isignia are illegal." - Brittany's Pantry
"As a military wife, I or my hubby don't think it is offensive at all." - Michele Smith
"My military husband dislikes camo as fashion, finds it disrespectful. He'd never say anything to someone wearing it though." - Jo Cowan
"It's by no means offensive unless you wear rank or medals you didn't earn, or inappropriate display the US uniform." - Shauna W

These were just a few of the comments, and by no means do they represent the wide range of opinions that people hold on this subject. I did some Googling, and camouflage is first and foremost something that comes from animals, much like we use leopard print on our clothes, we also use camouflage. The military was the first to use it on clothes for combat, and now it is also widely popular for hunters and in the fashion world. I would love to hear what you guys think - is camo offensive? What do you wear or not wear when it comes to "military" inspired clothing?

ps. I ordered these mint jeans from Macy's.com yesterday. Their Friends & Family event - which means 25% off almost everything - ends today, use code FRIEND. I hope these jeans work out!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Camouflage

Inspiration via Real Beauty

I am unofficially naming camouflage as my favorite trend this year. I'm a little surprised at how much I love it, but this photo of Julianne Moore is what did me in. Camo skinnes have been on my shopping wishlist, but I haven't been able to find anything camouflage in stores. After my Black Friday shopping trip came up empty-handed I ordered the pair I'm wearing online from Zara. I don't generally "splurge" on trendy items (they were $60), however, the million times I plan to wear them should bring the cost per wear down to mere pennies. The fit couldn't be better and I love the rear flap pockets. I will be wearing outfit #2 today for the Macy's event - I needed something comfy enough to run around the store in - and it's a great mix of casual cool and glam. Are you a fan of the camouflage trend? Will you be wearing it?

Today's Everyday Fashion: NYE Options

Option 1
Option 2

I may not have set plans for New Year's Eve yet, but I'm already contemplating what to wear! I recently fell in love with both of these sparkly options on the Lily + Violet website and they let me try both (I'm sending one back). I'm having the toughest time deciding between the two because I like both for different reasons. I did some research on additional sequined options; see my picks for under $100 below. Which dress do you like better? What are you wearing on NYE this year?

Dress #1: Lily + Violet, $143
