Today's Everyday Fashion: Pennies on the Dollar

I'm going to a blogger meet-up tonight and this is what I'm wearing. I'm especially proud of this outfit because each one of the items in the inspiration photo cost more than what I spend on clothes in a year. (I'm guessing her jacket is Chanel, shoes look Balenciaga and bag is Hermes.) I love getting the same satisfaction from an outfit without the huge price tag! I think no matter how much money I have in life, I will always feel that way about getting a good deal. Do you agree - do you love the satisfaction of shopping for a bargain no matter your budget?

Speaking of money, today is the last day to vote for me to win $100k in the Cheap Sally contest. I'm neck-and-neck with another Florida resident, so would appreciate any votes you can send my way! And if I win, I will NOT be changing anything about the way I shop or blog. But I will have the freedom to stop worrying about money for a couple years, which is nice. ;-) Please vote here.

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Tights Experiment

Well kids... I bought a camera! My first big-girl camera, a Canon Rebel T3. I figured it was about time I upgraded, and I got a really great deal on Black Friday. Here's the catch though (there's always a catch). I tried taking my usual outfit photos with it yesterday and it was kind of a disaster. I had help (via phone and in person) from a couple semi-pro friends, but to no avail. You are looking at the one salvageable photo, and even it has a bit of a shadow still. (If you have any indoor photography tips or suggestions, please feel free to leave them in the comment section.)

Okay... on to the fashion stuff. I am totally obsessed with this inspiration photo and love the mix of maroon, mustard and animal print. I'm also wearing maroon tights for the first time and kind of love it. Tights are a big goal for me this winter - I want to get creative with them! Do you wear fun colored tights? What other colors should I buy?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Plaid Cape

It's Cyber Monday and I've got shopping on the brain! (Go here to see my list of deals from major retailers.) I also have winter wear on the brain, and this plaid cape is making me jealous of all of you who live in cold climates and can wear stuff like this already! (It's still warm here in Florida.) The folks at Happy Scarf recently sent me this cape (I call it part winter coat, part warm blanket), and I have to say that I'm a huge fan. When I put this look together, I was picturing myself working in NYC, walking to work on a chilly day (with some gloves and ear muffs). It's hard to tell without seeing it in person, but it's more like buying a winter coat, than a scarf or accessory - it's really that thick and warm. I can't wait to wear it with jeans this winter, and there are several different ways you can style it (see this YouTube video and the picture below) and today they are offering 20% off for Cyber Monday. What do you think - would you rock the plaid cape? What are you planning to buy on Cyber Monday?

Plaid cape: c/o Happy Scarf, $84 (20% off today for Cyber Monday)
Leather skirt: Handed down from a friend
Tights: Hue via TJ Maxx, $10
Belt: Forever 21, $10
Boots: Cynthia Rowley via TJ Maxx, $85

How to Pack

Amazon.com

Packing for a trip. If you are like me, this is one of the most dreaded fashion situations you can face. I’m really hoping someone will invent a way to teleport your entire closet with you wherever you go. In the meantime, here are my tips, tricks and past mistakes in hopes of helping you become a better packer!

1. Brainstorm.
On my recent trip to Europe, I spent at least two months planning my outfits in advance. That might sound excessive, but I was visiting a climate that was very different from the one I live in, wearing shoes I never wear (flats) and I also wanted to come up with cute outfits I could use as blog posts. ;-) You may not need as much planning as I did, but I still think that doing some initial brainstorming can really help with packing. Write down outfit ideas for your trip in the days and weeks leading up to your trip. Use inspiration photos and fashion blogs to get fresh new ideas.

2. Check the weather.
Leading up to your trip you’ll want to be checking the weather on a fairly regular basis. I recommend checking online, but also asking people you know that live there or have been to that region at the same time of year. I am notoriously bad at packing correctly for the weather. On my recent trip to Europe, I underestimated how hot Rome would be despite having checked the weather a gazillion times. If you are unsure of the weather or visiting multiple climates as I was, I recommend bringing an item from either end of the spectrum (both a warm coat and a pair of summery sandals, for example) *just in case.*

3. Pick your shoes first.
So… where to begin? With your shoes, of course! My #1 packing tip is to start with your shoes. These are by far the biggest and bulkiest items in your suitcase, so I always start there first. Often, I will pick either black or brown shoes and stick with that same color theme for the whole trip. Another tip: wear your bulkiest pair of shoes on the plane (both directions) to save room in your suitcase.

4.  Pick your jackets next.
The weather research you do will help determine how heavy and how many jackets to bring, and I recommend picking them next since they are also one of the bulkiest items in your suitcase. Use the shoes and jackets as a guide, and then only pack the smaller items (tops, bottoms, dresses) that go with them.

5. Layer it up.
Even the best meteorologist can't detect quick weather changes, so whenever possible I suggest packing outfits that have varying “stages” like the one above, that you can be adjusted based on how cold or hot it turns out to be that day. This can also be a helpful way to pack if you are traveling from one very hot climate to a very cold climate in the same day, or if it's warm during the day and gets much colder at night. Try packing a cardigan that can go under each jacket you packed and/or a scarf or gloves that you can add to your outfits.

6. Pack full outfits.
To ensure that I don’t pack a single item I won’t use, I like to try everything on and pack full outfits, rather than bits and pieces. This method might not work for everyone, but it has been a huge space saver for me. (Bonus: if you take the time to snap a photo of each outfit, you can look back at the pictures to help you remember what's in your suitcase and choose which outfit to wear while you're on your trip!)

7. Reuse, reuse, reuse.
I try not to pack anything that I won’t wear twice, even on a short trip. Try to think of packing as a fun puzzle and challenge yourself to come up with a way to re-wear any given item more than once.

8. Evaluate.
At the end of packing, I recommend going through everything and do three things: 1. Count how many outfits you have. Make sure you haven’t packed too many outfits, or not enough. 2. Imagine as many scenarios as possible (museum, church, mountains, dinner) and make sure you have head-to-toe look for every occasion. 3. Pick which outfits you will wear on the plane in both directions.

A Packing Case Study: What I Packed for Europe

My recent trip to Europe was 16 days, 7 flights, one train ride and three countries (England, France and Italy). This is everything I wore (minus two outfits, those photos were unfortunately erased). I packed:

Three pairs of (cute) shoes.
  • My super-comfy flat Bakers boots that I’ve had for a year.
  • A new pair of Michael Kors loafers. I must’ve tried on 50 pairs of flats and these were by far the most comfy!
  •  A new pair of boat shoes. These are a great alternative to sneakers since they have a cushy rubber bottom like sneakers but are much cuter (in my opinion).
  •  My gym shoes. I had planned to work out at least 3 times, but only wound up wearing them once, on a run through the streets of Milan. I would consider leaving these behind next time, but then again that run was one of my favorite highlights of the trip, so it’s a tough call!
Four jackets.
  • Trench coat. (didn't use it, not pictured)
  • Wool navy coat. (worn 4 times)
  • Camel blazer. (worn 4 times)
  • Tan leather jacket. (worn 4 times)

Five bottoms.
  • Dark skinny jeans. (worn 2 times)
  • Black skinny jeans. (worn 2 times)
  • Camel wool skirt. (worn 2 times)
  • Red cords. (worn 2 times)
  • Striped skirt. (worn 1 time)

Seven dresses.
  • Light pink ruffles. (worn 1 time)
  • Polka dots. (worn 1 time)
  • Gray t-shirt dress. (worn 1 time, with leggings on the plane)
  •  Camel t-shirt dress. (worn 1 time, with leggings on the plane)
  • Sweater dress. (worn 2 times, not pictured)
  • Olive dress. (worn 1 time)

Eight tops.
  • Graphic tee.  (worn 1 time)
  • Blue collared shirt. (worn 2 times)
  • Plaid collared shirt.  (worn 1 time)
  • Striped t-shirt. (worn 2 times)
  • Mustard tank top.  (worn 1 time)
  • Red silk blouse.  (worn 1 time)
  • Leopard blouse. (worn 1 time)
  • Polka dot blouse. (worn 1 time)

One purse.
  • I brought one, large purse. It was big enough to stuff full on the airplane, but then small/lightweight enough to wear cross-body style while sightseeing. It usually contained a bottle of water, snacks, maps, and the usual stuff (wallet, lip gloss, sunglasses) for sightseeing.

Tons of accessories.
  • The right statement necklace can dramatically change your look, but as I discovered they are also very heavy, so choose wisely when packing these. I wore my heaviest necklace (Stella & Dot Jacqueline) three times on this trip.

What I packed but didn't need:
  • My trench coat (planned to wear it over the pink ruffled and polka dot dresses). It was much hotter in Italy than I thought it would be and I didn't need it.
  • Four cardigans/sweaters that I packed "just in case." I really overdid it on this part. I'm a wuss when it comes to the cold, and overall I just really thought it would be much colder than it was in Italy and France. I wish I had done even more research on the weather beforehand to avoid this! I also wish I had considered the other end of the spectrum - a super-hot day, and packed a pair of flat sandals. These would have really come in handy in the 100-degree heat in Rome!
  • I packed an "alternate" outfit at the very last minute that I didn’t wind up needing. I wore the other pieces, but not the cargo pants. Those were wasted space in my luggage!

Other packing tips for Europe:
  • Since I was checking a bag, I felt free to stuff it full. This was a mistake. It wound up being over 50 pounds, which meant I was removing items at the airport and putting them into my purse. Which then meant I was carrying the world's heaviest purse on and off the plane. We also opted to take public transit to and from the airport most of the time, which resulted in my lugging my own 50 pound suitcase up and down stairs all over Europe. Choose wisely.
  • Historical places like churches will make you cover your legs and arms when you enter. Since it was 100 degrees in Italy, I wore a breezy skirt and tank top and just covered up with a scarves (see photo above) as I entered the church.
  • I packed my straightener, but not my hair dryer since hotels usually have those. You will need converters for anything you want to plug in (like your phone charger) so make sure to pick those up before your trip.
  •  Don’t forget the snacks. I brought a jar of peanut butter that saved my life on a super-early flight. Nothing was open yet so that became my breakfast.

What are your best tips for packing?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Primary Colors

Last week I had a blogger tweet-up to attend and this is what I wore! I've done primary colors looks before (such as this one) and honestly can't get enough. Tell me - would you wear this look?

Video Interview with Christopher Straub

Christopher's new clothing line for maurices

This morning I had the very exciting opportunity to interview Christopher Straub, an uber-talented fashion designer who made it into the top 4 on Season 6 of Project Runway. He just released a clothing line exclusively for maurices full of super-affordable, chic clothing (prices from $12-89), a handbag and signature fragrance. I had a great time chatting with him and learning more about his journey and I think you guys are really going to enjoy the video as well. (Minus the fact that his face is a tad blurry, gotta love technology sometimes.) Also be sure to check out his clothing line online now at maurices.com! ps. maurices provided me with a gift card since I did this post (as if talking to Christopher wasn't reward enough?!) but I'll be saving it for my maurices-obsessed sister this Christmas. Hopefully she's not reading this. ;-)

Today's Everyday Fashion: Black Friday

Ahhhh... Black Friday. I've been writing about the biggest day in shopping on my VISIT FLORIDA page this week, and even went to the mall yesterday to scope out what deals stores are offering. (See my Twitter account for what I learned.) I have to admit though, I'm not the biggest fan of shopping that day. I prefer to save my money for the real best day of the year for bargains - the day after Christmas! (See the crazy deals I got last year here!) I would love to hear what you guys really think of the holiday though - do you shop 'til you drop on Black Friday or avoid the malls like the plague?

About my outfit: if you are headed out on a marathon shopping spree, this outfit is for you! Comfy, flat shoes, stretchy pants and a layers on top to adjust to the temperatures fit the bill for a long day of shopping. I plan to hit the mall for a few hours to catch a deal or two before noon, but it's in the 80's this week in Orlando so I'll likely wear something a little more warm-weather friendly. Can't wait to share my finds with you guys though and hear what you bought too. Let the shopping begin!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Totally Genius

Maybe I'm just easily entertained, but the idea of putting a cargo vest over a leather jacket = genius!! Heck, the idea of putting anything over a leather jacket is genius to me. It never, ever would have occurred to me to layer something on top of a leather jacket. My brain is definitely more left than right, so I have a hard time thinking outside the box at times. It is days like these that make me love the internet and the fact we can share fashion ideas with each other, because I dig this look and think it's cute. :-) Am I living under a rock? Have you ever layered something over your leather jacket?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Souvenir

The most exciting thing about today's outfit (other than the fact that I found yet another way to wear my favorite color combo - cobalt and cognac!) is the scarf. It has a special place in my heart because I bought it on my recent trip to Europe. I purchased it from a street vendor in Rome, which is not usually the best place to find high fashion (unless it's fake designer purses you are after), but this scarf was just too perfect to pass up. I wasn't sure I would even wear it, but as soon as I saw this inspiration photo I was inspired to pull it out and give it a go. What's your favorite souvenir that you've picked up on a trip?

I'm a huge fan of using the items you already have in your closet and re-working them in different ways. Today I'm sharing how I took my polka dot dress from this summer (left) and turned it into a fall/winter look (right)! The addition of a velvet jacket, boots and tights make the dress perfect for a holiday party or other winter festivity. This outfit is also part of the latest DailyBuzz style challenge, and on Tuesday I'll be posting a link so you can see how the other bloggers wore polka dots, too. How do you re-work the items in your closet for different seasons? Are you rocking the polka dot trend this fall/winter?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Sequins Obsessed

I feel a bit like a broken record saying this, but I am sequins-obsessed. Always have been (the princess costume my mom made me as a 5-year-old was covered in them) and I'm starting to think that I always will be. Sequins are supposedly back in style, but I wonder - did they ever really leave? Because I love 'em. They have such a luxe feel to them, and I am a huge fan of anything with texture (herringbone, ruffles, ruching, etc.). I'm wearing my latest sequin purchase - this maroon/wine color top from MJR Sales with black skinny jeans out tonight. Tell me - are you also sequins obsessed? Are sequins a new trend for you, or have you been wearing them forever like me?

Shirt: Moda via MJR Sales, $19 (this links to lots of sequin goodies!)

Today's Everyday Fashion: TGIF

I'm so excited it's Friday!! I've had a tough week (a bad cold had me bedridden for most of it), and I have friends coming into town today, so I'm looking forward to hitting up Disney with them and taking some time off! (woo hoo!) I'll be sharing some of the outfits I wear over the weekend, but in the meantime I thought I would share a Casual Friday work look. I only have one qualm about this outfit - if you take off the coat and put down the purse, it's pretty plain. So maybe this outfit is better suited for lunch or a day of shopping so you can leave the coat on? :-) Where would you wear this outfit? What are your weekend plans?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Red Blazer

I have a funny relationship with the color red. A couple years ago, I wouldn't be caught dead in it. Now, I can't get enough of it! So it feels really funny to call my new red blazer a "staple" but it I think I will be wearing it often this fall/winter! I've had it on my shopping to-do list for quite some time, so I was definitely happy to when I stumbled up on this one for such a great price at MJR Sales. (The same blazer is for sale on Victoria's Secret.com right now for almost triple the price! I'm guessing someone returned it and that's how it wound up on MJR Sales.) Are you digging red this fall/winter? Will you be rocking a red blazer?

How to Travel Cheaply

Eiffel Tower at night

As you know, I recently embarked on a 16-day adventure through Europe: 5 nights in Paris, 2 nights in Milan, 2 nights Rome and 5 nights London. Sounds expensive, doesn’t it? It doesn’t have to be. Here are my secrets on how I saved tons of money on this vacation!

1. Rewards programs. About a year in advance of the trip, I applied for a Marriott Rewards credit card (I pay off the balance each month and just accumulate points). The person I went to Europe with travels for work often and only stayed in Marriott hotels for a year. Between the two of us, our hotel stays were free for this trip. Even further, with Gold Status we got free breakfast every morning, and unlimited bottled water and snacks. Goes without saying that this was a huge money saver!
2. Fly round trip. I started scoping out flights months in advance, and what I noticed is that round trip flights to Europe were way cheaper than flying to one country and then home from another. So I booked a round trip to London, which only cost about $600 per person (including taxes and fees). The trip started in Paris, which meant getting on another (separately booked) flight from London to Paris once we arrived, but then I ended the trip in London for easy access going home.
3. Stay longer. If you are investing in a $600 flight to Europe, my strategy is to “see it now, while you are here” to get your money’s worth. The only catch to this? The longer you are away from home, the more money you spend on food and other expenses, so it’s all about finding a balance between the two. Overall I wouldn’t opt to fly to Paris for just two nights if you can help it though – might as well stay longer if you are spending the money to fly across the pond!
4. Visit less cities. Every city I added on to the trip added major expense. One-way flights and train rides between cities in Europe are often only about $100 per person, but they add up quickly. Looking back, I wish I would have just gone to three cities (versus four) on this trip to save even more money.

Colosseum at night

5. Use public transit. Another huge money saver: we took public transportation, not only for sightseeing, but also to and from the airport. This means lugging your own suitcase up and down the stairs on the subway, fighting your way onto a crowded subway car, etc. but you will save hundreds of dollars this way. (I also kind of enjoy the challenge of navigating public transit so this part was fun for me!)
6. Stick to free stuff. Pretty much every historical attraction is free, but then they have optional fees. You can pay to go inside Westminster Abbey, the Colosseum, Nortre Dame, etc., and while all of those places are amazing, at the end of the day you will be spending hundreds of dollars if you pay at every single one of them. You can chose to explore a few of your favorites, but for the most part there are plenty free things to do, so paying is really unnecessary. In London, I recommend skipping the huge fees at Westminster Abbey and focusing on the totally free (!) museums throughout the city. In Italy, all churches are free to enter including my favorite thing ever (St. Peter’s Basilica). In Paris, the Louvre was worth the extra money, but I opted to tour only the free parts of Nortre Dame.
7. Don’t buy American. It’s tempting to buy things at H&M and other stores we have in the U.S. while traveling because there is an extra appeal in that “I got this in London!” Just don’t do it though. Because of the exchange rate you will be paying 50-60% more than what you would at home. Stick to the stuff you can’t buy in the U.S., especially when buying clothes!
8. Get a VAT refund. If you do some shopping in the U.K., save your receipts!.You can get a refund on taxes at the airport by showing them the item and the receipt. Look for signs when you get to the airport for the VAT refund office, and be sure to bring your items and the receipt with you to the office.

What are your tips for saving money on vacation?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Color Purple

Purple was always my favorite color as a kid. What color Popsicle did I want? Purple. What color bike did I want? Purple. What color marker did I want? Purple. I even had a stuffed animal that smelled purple. (Okay, it was grape, but you catch my drift.) Today's monochromatic look is a throwback to 5-year-old me who would have loved an all-purple outfit and just looking at it makes me smell purple again. Dressing in one color like this can also be a really easy work outfit. Try it with blue, red, green or purple in your closet and see how it goes! Are you a fan of monochromatic looks like these?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Back-Up Plan

This is a back-up outfit I packed on my recent trip to Europe. For the most part, I packed complete outfits and had just enough to cover my 16-day stay. But at the last minute I decided to pack another full outfit *just in case.* I never wound up wearing it, however, I did wear two other outfits with this striped shirt (see them here and here) and was happy to have at least brought the pieces with me (the cargo pants are the only thing that never got worn). On my last vacation, I counted the days wrong and wound up not having enough outfits (!) so having one too many was just right. Do you usually over-pack or under-pack?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Double Leopard

My love for leopard just keeps growing. (It's a borderline obsession at this point!) I recently added another piece to my wardrobe, this super-affordable cardigan from MJR Sales. I am wearing it today to church and keeping the rest of my outfit pretty simple. I am doubling up on the leopard though - by wearing a leopard belt with my leopard cardigan! Have you ever worn two different leopard prints in the same outfit?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Do the Polka

I'm loving polka dots lately, which is evident by the fact that I keep reaching for them in my closet! Since these two looks were so similar, I decided to show them together. Both looks are a tad "loud" but some days I'm in the mood to wear something fun and playful and these outfits certainly fit the bill for those kinds of days. Are you rocking the polka dot trend this fall? Which look do you like better?
