Today's Everyday Fashion: City Camping

Nicky Hilton is what I call "city camping." She is one s'more away from a campfire, but her heels and bare legs are really more suitable for the city. ;-) I gave city camping a try, and came up with this outfit fit for you cold weather folks (as I would unfortunately suffocate in a look like this in Florida right now). I personally think it's a cute nod to the plaid and mixing prints trends, but tell me - do these outfits work in real life?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Earth Tones

I wore this outfit to a networking meeting this week! I absolutely love this look. It's made up of a bunch of rich earthy tones including olive, cognac, and black and brown, one of my favorite color combos. And the flare jeans, velvet blazer and big pendant all have a funky 70's vibe that I'm totally digging. You can see a somewhat similar outfit I wore in the summer here. Are you a fan of earth tones and/or the 70's trend?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Tricky Trousers

I have a real love-hate relationship with these pants. On the one hand, I love a cropped trouser and I think they are such a chic alternative to your usual (boring) work pant! On the other hand, they have a drop-crotch/somewhat harem style that just doesn't look good when you wear something short. So it's tough to find things that look "right" with them. Thankfully, I only paid $15 for them. (I also took them to a tailor - they look better now, but still didn't quite come out how I wanted them to!) I recently came up with today's look based on this Gap photo, and it got me thinking of other outfits I've done with these pants.... so I picked three and shared them below! I think overall the only one that really works is #2, because the shirt is long enough to cover the top part of the pants. Not ideal to have a pair of pants that only work with super-long shirts, but I love how they look in #2 so I will attempt to do more outfits like that one in the future! Do you agree that #2 is the only outfit "win"? How would you style these tricky trousers?

Inspiration photo: Gap
Leather jacket: Banana Republic, $150
Sweater: Banana Republic,  old
Pants: Gap, $15
Shoes: Restricted from Endless, $40
Necklace: Stella & Dot
Ring: My Stella & Dot website, $49

Total win. (My outfit was in InStyle magazine!) This shirt is really long, but somewhat sheer, so it provides the right amount of coverage without looking frumpy. One of my favorite looks of all time! (Original post here.)

Okay. This shirt is just barely long enough and the shoes elongate my feet, making the pants more flattering. I want to zest up this outfit a little though - maybe add a scarf or sweater vest? And ideally I wish the shirt was just a tad longer. (Original post here.)

Total fail. I think this blazer and shirt are just too short for these pants, unfortunately. I think I need to style these pants more like leggings and stick to very long shirts like look #2 going forward! Overall, untraditional clothing items like these pants can be tough to style, but I think it's worth the trial and error to create outfit "wins" like #2. (Original post here.)

Get your own tricky trousers! (j/k, hopefully these will fit like a dream!)

2. Frech Connection cropped trouser, $29

Winter Trends That Work This Spring

We may be deep into winter weather right now, but spring fashion is just around the corner! With so many trends to choose from this winter, which ones should you invest in so that you get more bang for your buck? Here are four winter trends and how to wear them this spring. (This is a guest post for Shecky's, you can see it here!)

1. Corduroys. Corduroys may seem like a heavy material only reserved for winter, but paired with bright colors and sandals, you can wear them all summer long!

1. Forever 21 Skinny Corduroy Pants, $19.80
2. Victoria’s Secret Pencil Pant in Corduroy, $47.60
3. Ann Taylor Corduroy Skinny Fashion Pants, $49.99
4. JFOUR Casual Pants via YOOK, $49

2. Python. Python has taken retailers by storm this winter, but thankfully the fun doesn't have to end when warm weather rolls around. Pair your python with other summery pieces like an olive skirt and sandals for an exotic warm-weather look!

1. Ary K. Python-Print Silk Top via Dillard’s, $47.40
2. Two-pocket Fitted Camp Shirt via Victoria’s Secret, $44.50
3. Jessica Simpson Abby Wristlet via Famous Footwear, $24.99
4. Nine West Squared Off Medium Shopper via Macy’s, $40.99

3. Pleated Skirts. Pleated skirts came on the scene this winter, but I love them for spring! Wear them now with tights, and later with a lightweight top to take you through all seasons.

1. Elle pleated skirt via Kohl’s, $35
2. LC Lauren Conrad floral accordian-pleat chiffon skirt via Kohl’s, $35
3. ModCloth Bold Flame Skirt, $42.99
4. 212 Collection accoridan-pleat skirt via Kohl’s, $30.80

4. Sequins. Sequins might make you think of 'holiday' at first, but they are perfectly appropriate in all seasons. Pair a sparkly topper with a mini skirt or a sequin mini with a basic tank for an easy nighttime look.

1. Express Sequin Moto Jacket via MJR Sales, $25.60
2. Arden B Paillette Sequin Tank, $34.50
3. Forever 21 Sequined Skirt, $19.80
4. Arden B Mesh Sequin Tunic, $39.50

Which one is your favorite? What winter trends do you plan to wear this spring?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Winter Brights

It's no secret that I. love. color. And winter, in my opinion, is no time to stop wearing it! That's why this J.Crew winter look stopped me in my tracks. I love the idea of pairing purple-red-yellow, and I love the way they effortlessly pulled it off for colder weather. I don't have a thick yellow coat in my closet, but I gave it a go using what I already had in this same color palette. I personally like the plum jeans better, although the skirt would be cute this summer, too! Do you like wearing bright colors in the winter?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The New Collared Shirt

I picked up this LOFT shirt on a whim, and have been loving (and buying) similar style shirts ever since! I'm calling it the new collared shirt, but it actually doesn't have a collar (mine is a henley with a few buttons), and it's silky and has pockets. I think it is a refreshing change under a blazer like in today's look look, but they also look great with jeans. Definitely a staple in my closet now! What are some recent additions to your closet that you just can't live without?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Preppy Nerd

Inspired by this J.Crew photo, I threw on this outfit yesterday and wore it to church. Part preppy, part nerdy, it was the perfect look to suit my mood. I'm a big fan of mixing blues and greens and I love how the neutrals flow in this look. Are you a fan of mixing blues and greens?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Trip to Sanibel

I'm so excited to share my first VISIT FLORIDA video with you guys! I traveled to Sanibel Island in October to get the scoop on shopping and you can watch the video here. This is what I wore (minus the shoes, I'll make you watch the video to see what shoes I actually wore!) and some pictures from my trip. I picked up this dress at TJ Maxx around the same time and thought the tropical feel was appropriate for a video about Florida. My casual outfit for the drive is below and is pretty much my go-to casual look when it's warm outside (right down to the messy hair). Also - the car I'm sitting on is not my car. Ford loaned me a Fiesta for my trip so I could give it a try and it was loads of fun. Kind of like driving a super-fast go-kart with fancy leather trim and push-to-start button. ;-) I'll be taking more trips this year to explore shopping in Florida - what is your favorite vacation or shopping destination in Florida?

Dress: TJ Maxx, $18

Today's Everyday Post: A Day in the Life

"Hello and welcome to.... a day in the life of J!" No really, my life is straight boring. Maybe not boring (because it is what you make it) but it's pretty average. That's why I get so frustrated when I look at magazines and blogs and wonder where the heck people are going in these outfits?!?! So today I'm showing you what I actually wore yesterday. To a normal person's day. Doing normal person things. This first outfit is what I wore out with my friends for a lovely SATC-style dinner. Nothing crazy, but I still took the opportunity to show a little fashion flare with my new tuxedo jacket and leopard pumps over a basic black sweater and jeans.

Below is my outfit I wore for errands. I had lunch with a friend, went to the insurance office, and ran a couple other quick errands. What I love about this outfit is that it's super-casual and almost boyish with just little hints of sexiness in the leopard and v-neck. Definitely doable stuff for an average person, without raising too many eyebrows. (I don't know about you, but I prefer eyebrows to stay in place when I walk into a room.) How do you balance being stylish in real life?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Outfit Fails

I love experimenting with fashion. But like with all experiments, results can vary and sometimes an attempt to re-create a look is a total fail (happens to the best of us!). I like to share all sides of my "fashion story" with you guys, including the fails, so here are 5 looks I would never let see the light of day and why. Do you think I made the right choices?

1. Marilyn Monroe called and she wants her sexy office look back. The fur, the purse, the tight skirt - it's all just a little too much at once. (Although, the model is pulling it off quite nicely!)

2. Attack of the gold space-age bubble butt. Unfortunately this skirt is a size too big for me, so it honestly looks pretty silly in person.

3. All I can think about are poor baby chinchillas when I look at this. Possibly because the sweater and faux fur are so similar in color? Love the J.Crew inspiration though.

4. I look like an American flag. No, really.

5. Meh. This is just a little too bland for me, and I like hers better. (Although I could pretty much wear anything with these shoes and be happy, I love 'em!)

10 New Blogger Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

Ambro / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Oh, the blogging world. It can be a tricky minefield of complicated relationships, unrealistic expectations and technical faux pas. That's why I'm sharing a short list of "new blogger mistakes" - things that I wish I had known as a new blogger, as well as some faux pas that I often see bloggers making. Read up and don't make me tell you "I told you so." ;-)

1.

Promoting too early.

I'm a big fan of sending messages to let people know that you have started a blog! What you shouldn't do, however, is send this email when you haven't posted anything on your blog yet. You should have at least one month's worth of posts before you start pushing your page. I personally started my blog with 20 outfits on day one, so that I could start marketing on day one (classic overachiever). But please don't send out your blog with no content! We have no idea what you plan to post until you actually show us.

2.

Stepping on other blogger's toes.

Besides the obvious (don't use someone's photo without giving credit, etc.) I also have to strongly caution you against using another blogger's blog or Facebook page as a method of promoting your own blog. I specify in my Comment Policy that I will remove any of these promotions from my Facebook page, but people do it all the time. It's simply not the appropriate time or place to promote your blog. Either email the blogger privately to let them know about your blog, or use Facebook as your page to make a thoughtful comment, but please don't spam another blogger's page.

3.

Doing what everyone else is doing.

Know how I came up with my blog? I did hours of research on what was already out there, and then I did the exact opposite of what everyone else was doing. Most people, I think, switch it around - they emulate whatever blog they like the best. I can't stress enough that not "doing you" is never going to work, and you will burn out quickly if you are trying to tell someone else's story. Try to find what makes you unique, and what you are good at, and blog that instead of emulating another style you liked or what is working for someone else.

4.

Not marketing.

"If you build it, they will come" only works in movies about baseball. To some extent, if your content is amazing enough it will catch on and you won't have to do much marketing. But for the most part you need to put yourself out there, or you won't ever have visitors your blog. (Look for my post on marketing your blog coming soon!)

5.

Not learning the technical stuff.

Ugh, I hate technical stuff. But now that I know it, I really wish I had known it sooner. Things like installing Disqus, setting up Google Analytics, and affiliate programs - I waited a year to learn most of these things and really wish I hadn't. Find a techie friend to help if you can, or visit my friend Katy Widrick's blog for some tips.

6.

Not being ready for criticism.

It breaks my heart when someone tells me they wanted to start a fashion blog, but decided not to because of the criticism they might face. It breaks my heart, and it also couldn't be more true. The internet is full of trolls. If you put yourself out there, be ready to deal with criticism. No matter how good your content is (or how amazing your outfits are), you can never please everyone. It gets easier as you grow, but blogging is not for the faint of heart.

7.

Thinking it will make you tons of money.

Like anything in life, you get out of it whatever you put into it. You might be able to create a blog that supports you full-time, but not without working full-time first. Gary Vaynerchuk video blogged for something like 7 years before he made any money. I worked for 40-60 hours a week for a year and wasn't making a dime yet. It can pay off in the end, but it is certainly not easy or a great "get rich quick" scheme.

8.

Running out of steam.

You will likely have a million ideas for your blog at first. To help you be consistent with your posts down the road, I recommend saving some of them! I used to be a posting machine when I first started and would sit down and crank out 10 posts at one time. Life gets busy though, so I highly recommend having some ammo saved for days when you run out of time.

9.

Comparing yourself to others.

Whatever you do, don't focus on someone else's success. Oprah says her team used to bring her the ratings of other talk shows when she first started and she wouldn't even look at them. Going along with what I said in #3, you should be doing something different from anyone else, which means that your numbers and your "success story" shouldn't look like anyone else's either. Just do the best you can, and don't worry about other blogs.

10.

Burning bridges.

This applies to all avenues in life, but burning bridges is all too easy in the blogging world. I have experienced both sides of this phenomenon - I've burned bridges when I shouldn't have, and I've also had some very popular bloggers be total b-words to me when I first started out. You never know who is going to be successful, and who you might want to work with down the road. So be nice to everyone. Nice always wins.

What are your top tips for new bloggers? Tips you wish you knew when starting out?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Pink Plaid

I wore this outfit last week for errands. It was finally cold enough for a blazer, and I wanted to wear some of my latest acquisitions from my shopping spree. I will admit, I bought this pink plaid shirt because it reminds me of ones I've seen at J.Crew. I wish I could buy everything in that store, but for now this more budget-friendly option will have to do. If you could have an unlimited budget in any store, which one would you choose?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Mustard Tights

This winter I made a goal to experiment with tights more and I'm jumping in feet-first! (because that's how one generally puts on tights, after all) I ordered a bunch of colors - gold and hunter green in today's post, and navy from yesterday's post. The gold (aka mustard) is definitely going to be the hardest to style but I'm giving it a go in today. I decided to play it safe and show a smaller amount of leg for this first look, although I'm still not sure that I don't look part Oompa Loompa, so I also tried it with hunter green. Which look is your favorite? How do you style mustard tights?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Gossip Girl x 3

One Gossip Girl look, three ways to interpret it. I am a huge fan of this green-yellow-polka dots combination, and I also like the look of dark tights (mine are navy) with a yellow pump. I felt so inspired that I decided to have a little fun in my closet! What I love about the results is that it's not just three different looks, but it's also showing you how to get more versatility out of a dress. Not only can you wear a cardigan over it, but you can also put a long sleeve blouse under it, or a blouse over it to wear and as a skirt. Which way would you wear it?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Longest Day Ever

I wish I was exaggerating, but I spent 10 hours at the mall on Saturday!! The first half was spent working on a very exciting project (#3 under Hire Me) - mum's the word for now but hopefully I can tell you more about it later. The last half was spent on #1 under Hire Me - giving someone a complete closet makeover! It was an amazing day (as Kanye would say "don't let me get in my zone"), but a lot of time on my feet so I wore my new leopard pumps for the first part of the day and switched to boots for the rest of the day. What shoes do you wear for a 10-hour day on your feet?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Fun with Stripes

I can't get enough stripes lately. I love them paired in unique combos with other stripes, polka dots, and even prints like leopard. They are a current trend, but have been around for ages. Is there anything they don't look good with?! I gave my striped shirt a spin with a couple new print combos I haven't done before. Which one is your favorite? What's a unique way you like to wear stripes?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Wool Hat

I think floppy wool hats are adorable, so when I recently found this one on sale for $12, I had to give it a try. It wasn't until I got home that I had the reaction that I think most people would: "what in the world am I going to wear this with?!!" Thankfully, I have tons of inspiration photos (aka "outfit recipes") saved on my computer to get me started. I loved the look of a oversized sweater, skinny jeans and booties so I gave it a try! I really only feel comfortable wearing hats when I'm outdoors, so I would likely wear this look to a farmer's market or other outdoor errands. Are you rocking the floppy wool hat trend? What do you like to pair it with?

Today's Everyday Fashion: A Fresh Start

I apologize while I get a little *serious* on the blog today. I will be straight with you: it's been a rough few months. I think I lost my blogging mojo/ enthusiasm a little bit, and I honestly appreciate you sticking with me during this time. The good news is that I am SO pumped for 2012, it's not even funny. I have new ideas for J's Everyday Fashion, a new hair color, a website re-design on the way, and in general I plan on kicking butt and taking names. One genre of *new things* I'm kicking off today is my first post on blogging strategy (see below), which I'll be sharing more of throughout the year. I also plan to host more discussions on fashion - modesty is my first topic (coming soon!) and I love a good debate so get your keyboards ready ladies! ;-) I am so excited about 2012, so here's to a great year ahead.

About my outfit: is anything better than a J.Crew catalog? Nada. I have definitely re-created more looks from there than anywhere else, it's just so good. I wore this little getup to the mall on Tuesday for my shopping spree. Cute and comfy, what more can you ask for?

Why I Blog On Facebook

I have a dirty little Facebook secret that no other blogger is using, and today I'm spilling the beans. I grew my blog to more than 10,000 Facebook fans in the first year, which was not a stroke of luck, or a coincidence. Here's how I did it and why:

I approach Facebook in a totally different way than any other blogger out there (that I've seen). I don’t treat Facebook as a follow-up to my blog, or a supporting material, I consider it to be a totally separate blogging platform. Some people use Blogger as a platform. Some people use Wordpress. Others use Tumblr. I blog on Facebook.

What that means – is that I actually post all of my content on Facebook so people can comment there. I don’t ever post links to my blog posts – my Facebook page IS my blog essentially! What this does is utilize the world’s #1 website and the billions of people who are already on there. You are bringing the content to them, to a website that they are already comfortable using. Why is this key? Because there are countless people who have no idea what a blog is. I hear daily from my Facebook fans, who will admit to me that they don’t read other blogs or even know what blogs are. Being in the blog world can make us forget that not everyone is blog savvy. Why miss the millions of people who could love your content, but are only using Facebook at this point? It makes no sense whatsoever to force people to digest your content on the platform YOU are most comfortable with, it's all about bringing the content to where the readers are. (This is why I will be adding Pinterest to my blogging repertoire this month!)

So what’s the catch? Why is no one doing it this way? The main complaint bloggers have is that Facebook takes away from page views. So if you have banner ads on your website, then you want as many people on your blog as possible and you could care less about Facebook. I totally understand this way of thinking, but I also think it’s totally wrong. Here's why:

1. What is more valuable to you – a dedicated, hardcore fan that loves your blog and tells everyone they know about you? Or a banner ad? The engagement is SO much more worthwhile! A banner ad may satisfy your immediate needs, but a large, engaged group will give your blog longevity and ultimately more fans. Let's dream big for our blogs rather than focusing on the immediate (banner ads).

2. That dedicated fan I mentioned? They will go out and tell at least 20 people they know about you. And guess what? Some of them may have blogs, and those blogs will start giving you those page views you wanted immediately. One hardcore fan on Facebook can equal 20 new blog fans. Facebook will eventually feed your blog, I am living proof! I started my Facebook page first, and then added Blogger later. A year later and my Blogger numbers are kicking Facebook’s butt. Facebook leads will turn into page views on your blog eventually.

3. Banner ads are the only type of ads that don't work on Facebook. There are still tons of ways to put sponsorships on your Facebook page through content and links. And many companies will be very interested in getting in front of 10,000 Facebook fans - especially when they understand that these are two totally separate groups of people that you are reaching! (That's twice the audience!) A view of your content has the same weight, no matter what blogging platform you are using.

4. At the end of the day, I truly believe that it’s not about you – or what makes you comfortable as a blogger. It’s about your fans, and what they want. That's just plain customer service.

So let's talk logistics. How do you post your content on Facebook? There are tons of ways of doing it. A few are:

1. Use the Notes section.
2. Post a single photo or photo montage. You have unlimited space for text and links. (This is how I do it! See left.)
3. Post a new photo album with chunk of info in each caption.

I sometimes have to alter my content a bit to make it work on both platforms, but I think this extra time is totally worth it, because I'm talking to two separate groups of people. If I haven’t convinced you yet, here are a few more reasons to love Facebook:

1. Facebook allows you to interact with your fans in a way that other platforms will never be able to compete with. Fans can post questions, photos of themselves, links to interesting pieces of information. Blogging is a two-way street (in my opinion) and nothing is as interactive as Facebook. It's the best platform out there!

2. Your blog post shows up on fans' Facebook feed, unlike Google reader or a bookmarked site which they have to remember to check. It’s genius, and a great way to get your post in front of them. (This is also a good argument for using Twitter.)

3. Facebook is a super-connected web that makes it easy for people to share your page, and to find you. Whenever a fan comments, their friends see it. And now you can tag other Facebook pages in your post that leaves little streams all over Facebook that lead back to you.

I hope I've convinced you to give Facebook a try, and I'm curious to hear how you approach Facebook for blogging. Leave your thoughts, comments and questions below and check out my Facebook page here!
