Today's Everyday Fashion: Meow

I don't think I've ever had a skirt in this material before. The pattern is what drew me in, but it's the fact that it feels like pajamas that sold me. It's not like thin pajamas that show everything though - it's somehow both comfy and provides coverage (just say no to VPL). I had a few ideas for how to wear it, and decided to go with my ever-trusty electric blue top, inspired by the J.Crew combo. (The red looks great with her outfit, but I wanted to keep mine simple.) I love this for an office look or for meetings, but tell me - would a leopard skirt ever fly in your office?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Pink Jeans

I took my new pink jeans out for a spin yesterday. I wore this first look to church and a meeting. The bottom look is what I originally put together - going loosely off the photo I snapped at J.Crew with my phone. I wasn't in the mood for a print when I woke up, so I subbed in an ivory silk blouse for a softer look. Which outfit is your favorite?

Mission Trip to Africa

A few months ago, God laid on my heart to go to Africa with a team from my church. I signed up and with that I was committed to going to Sierra Leone from July 21 - August 2 to serve in an orphanage! Along with my commitment to serve with my hands and heart for two weeks, I'm also required to raise $3,000, so with that the fundraising begins. I want to ask for something small, so would you consider a $5 donation for the children of Sierra Leone?

It's hard to explain, but the minute I spotted the flyer at Summit Church, I knew I was going. It has been both the best and roughest year of my life, and Africa seemed somehow to be a good fit for both sides of that equation. I feel beyond blessed to have the job that I do right now. Since I am able to take off as much time as I need, I really wanted to show my appreciation and pay it forward by committing two weeks to service, along with my own financial contributions. I was also very close to serving in the Peace Corps or AmeriCorps five years ago, and this feels like a smaller version of that experience, that I still regret not doing.

So what will we be doing in Sierra Leone? Our team of 20+ will be providing some much-needed relief for the African women who usually run the orphanage. Our presence will give them two weeks off, and will we be supervising and helping the kids with their daily tasks of gathering water and food, and going to school. I am beyond excited about seeing a new continent and experiencing a new culture. I am nervous about vaccinations, lions, being as helpful as possible to my team and the children we are serving, and about getting sick because I have hypoglycemia and a couple other medical conditions that will make living without running water and my usual diet pretty rough. So far, we've had three team meetings, put down money on our flights, and I'm going to the doctor this week for all those scary shots.

So, here's what I'm hoping you can help with. Prayers and support for our team. And (no pressure at all), if you want - a $5 donation (think of it as one cup of coffee!). To donate, simply send money via PayPal to this email address: jsmissiontoafrica@gmail.com (it's a special low-fee account). If you are a company who would like to donate and receive free advertising, please send an email to the same address. Thanks so much in advance for your help! This opportunity to raise money and serve means the world to me, and so does your support.

ps. Summit is not taking online giving for mission trips right now, but if you prefer to pay them directly, or mail a check (versus PayPal), please email for instructions!

Update 7/11: I am very grateful for the tough conversations that happened in the comments section. Fundraising has brought a totally different perspective to this journey than just donating my own money would have. I am bringing a piece of every person that donated with me to Africa, and that fellowship means a lot to me. It has also been a lesson on faith, and trusting God to provide, rather than taking care of it myself. I also hope I have spread some awareness about the hardship in Sierra Leone, and hopefully plant a seed for many of you to get active in your own communities or even abroad. And my attitude of service is greatly different going to Africa, knowing that I am not only serving the kiddos, but also serving all of you who donated, I will strive to do my best for you and your contributions. Thank you to everyone who contributed, but also to everyone who commented with tough questions and helped me further define why I want to go to Africa, and why fundraising in this way was such an important part of the journey! Best, J.

Today's Everyday Fashion: A New Way

At first glance, this tribal skirt is perfect for a night out - it's short, it's stretchy and it looks great with heels. But the inspiration photo opened my eyes to an alternate way of wearing it. I love the idea of a miniskirt with a half-tucked denim shirt and flat shoes! I'm not sure I would ever opt to run errands in this look (shorts or jeans are more comfy), but I would wear this for lunch with friends, or a casual night out. Where would you wear this look?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Python

I love the mix of military and python trends in this inspiration photo. I don't have a python skirt, so I pulled out my python shirt instead. I paired it with silky pleated shorts I picked up last summer, and a bit of serious neck bling in place of her ornate belt. I like this kind of classy but sexy night out look as an alternative to mini skirts or jeans and a dressy top. I might switch out the clutch for a brown or nude color, but overall I think this one is a win. Would you wear either of these looks for a night out?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Quirky

I love the quirkiness of this inspiration photo. (Are those Hammer pants?!) Red and turquoise are a favorite color combo of mine, so while her look is a little "wild," I still wanted to give it a try. I like my outfit, but I can't help but point out that I wish I was either wearing brown shoes or no belt. This skirt won't really stay in place without a belt, so maybe a belt that's a bit more discreet would have been better, or just a clothes pin to hold it up? {j/k} At any rate, quirky is the theme of the day, so I think I nailed it. *nailed it* Would you wear either of these looks in real life?

ps. I think I found the exact necklace she is wearing for $16 right here! (I kind of want to order it. I also want skirt #3 below.)

Today's Everyday Fashion: Bohemian

I was immediately smitten with this girl's bohemian flare. I love her turquoise wedges, so I pulled out my turquoise flat sandals as a substitute. I like her rolled pants look, but since my shoes are flat, I left my pants long. We've both got on navy tops, so add to that my lime green purse from last summer, and my favorite "arts and crafts" necklaces and I think this is a winning look for a casual occasion! (All I'm missing is the tote bag.) Would you rock a bohemian look?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Wish List

I'm on the fence about this look. I love the J.Crew inspiration, and I gave it a try by inverting the lavender top for a lavender bottom, and a printed bottom for a printed top. I have an ivory/black striped shirt didn't look quite right with this, so a graphic tee did the trick. And I stuck with the theme of printed shoes with my leopard pumps. Today I'm leaving it up to you guys to decide though - would you wear this look? Also, I'm also sharing what is currently on my shopping wish list below! I hope to find the same or similar items over the next few months.

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Luncheon

I wore this outfit a couple weeks ago to a Leading Ladies Luncheon. (It was the National Day of prayer, and we prayed for the leaders of our country by name - it was really neat.) I threw this outfit together and snapped the photo on my way out the door. I love a blue monochromatic look, and thanks to some new-ish pieces in my closet, this is a take on it that I haven't done before. I was completely obsessed with the ocean as a child (and still am), and I think that could be why sea tones speak to me so much. Would you ever wear a monochromatic blue look?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Boat Shoes

Day 2 of my roadtrip yesterday and this is what I wore! I was inspired to put together this outfit from the Madewell photo below. I liked it so much, I saved it to wear on this trip. The day started cloudy so I didn't need the hat, and I lost the heavy necklaces in favor of a small pendant. I spent the day doing shopping research for my VISIT FLORIDA gig - lots of getting in and out of the car to snap photos of Worth Ave, Vero Outlets and much more. It proved to be a great comfy outfit for the occasion and although I originally bought these boat shoes for Europe last fall, I am liking them for this summer, too! Are you a fan of boat shoes/would you wear them?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Roadtrip

This is what I wore on the road to Miami yesterday! (And yep, I'm totally pumping gas in these pictures - doesn't get more realistic than that!) :-) This outfit sums up my super-casual style. I love rocking a t-shirt with interesting details, comfy shorts and flat sandals. This is also my first time wearing my new wrist bling - a departure from my usual all-metal bracelets, but I think I'm digging the colorful additions. What is your roadtrip style? Have you ever tried this style of bracelets?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Candy Stripes

I spent the day with a personal shopping client on Wednesday and this is what I wore! She recently lost her baby weight after 2 kids, had a $1,000 budget, and was pretty much starting from scratch. I wore this outfit for a couple reasons - one, whenever I'm representing my business, I try to wear something "creative." I also wore this for comfort. The flats were a must for all the walking, and the crossbody bag allowed me to have both hands free so I could carry more clothing. One unfortunate downside to this outfit, though - between the weight from the strap on my purse and the giant necklace, it scuffed up my shirt, and I think it might be ruined.  :-( (Good thing there are so many cute replacements below!) What do you wear when you go shopping? Are you digging the candy stripes trend?

I didn't actually go shopping this month. I did, however, manage to not make it out of the mall without buying something for myself! Between four trips to the mall for work (three personal shopping clients and a day of retail consulting), I scored all of these deals. The goals I set this month were pink jeans, colorful shorts and flat sandals, and I successfully crossed all three off my list!

1. I shared my secret of buying multiples in this post. I love my cobalt pencil skirt so much, I decided cobalt shorts were also a smart addition to my closet.
2. This print is bright neon in person, and I'm like a moth to a flame when it comes to neon. Gap also made these same exact shorts last summer and I have them in white and a navy print. I love the fit and fabric so much, I wanted more pairs this year!
3. So excited to finally have pink jeans. I originally wanted blush pink, but after getting lavender jeans, I went for a bright, neon pink (blush felt too similar to lavender). I used a coupon to get 50% off the full price in the store.
4. I've been buying tons of bright colors lately and this neutral dress felt like a welcome addition. It's also 100% silk, so for $33 it's a steal.
5. I have a similar blue top from F21 (it's the one I'm wearing in my profile pic) and love it, and this orange version is a glowing neon color in person... so I couldn't resist. ;-)
6. I have a H&M tribal bikini from 4 summers ago that is my absolute favorite. It's made it through three cruises, countless snorkeling and water sports, and is finally starting to show its age. This one is a very close replacement so I snapped it up!
7. My favorite brown sandals are dying. I can't wear them in public without feeling embarrassed, so I purchased these. I think they were worth the investment since I will be walking in them tons and wanted something with high-quality leather that provides plenty of comfort.
8. I put this on my wish list two months ago (per this post) and just happened to see it in the store on Wednesday, marked at 70% off. $30 for a beautiful leather clutch? Yes, please!
9. A neon beaded necklace to layer with other necklaces.
10. My favorite leather belt is almost 5 years old and it's marked up pretty bad. This one is really similar, and for real leather $18 is a great deal.
11. I've had my eye on a neon pink belt at Gap for ages but didn't want to spend that much. This one at F21 was a dead ringer and only $2, so I went for it.

Did you score any amazing deals this month? Anything on your wish list I can help you find?

*The total is $277, minus a $25 credit I had from returning this dress to Forever 21, which equals $252.

Today's Everyday Fashion: Cardigan Shirt

I've always wanted to try wearing a cardigan as a shirt, but I never seem to remember this trick while I'm in my closet! I credit the inspiration photo from Club Monaco for motivating me to finally give it a try. I think nude or blush pumps would be a great way to soften and dress up this look, but I also like the rugged brown leather accents paired with the feminine pieces. Have you ever worn a cardigan as a shirt?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Soft Neons

This is what I wore yesterday! I spent the afternoon at my retail consulting gig - putting together outfits from the new arrivals to use in an employee lookbook. (It was way more fun taking outfit photos and using the employees as models. Being the model is not my favorite!) Unlike many of my pre-planned outfits, I threw together this look right before I left. The soft neon colors blend well together, and I'm afraid the photograph isn't doing it justice because these colors look great in person! That said, I love this outfit, but I know neon isn't for everyone, so tell me - would you wear this look?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Blue Skirt

Last week I re-created a trendy Jessica Alba look that was purely experimental, and didn't hold up in the court of realistic fashion. This week, I decided to try something a little more simple, and turned her casual look into a work-appropriate outfit. I'm really loving the crisp white shirt and simple shoes paired with the bright colors. Below I show you the other 3 ways I've styled this skirt (the wrinkles, as you can see, are an unfortunate side effect from standing with my legs crossed). Which look is your favorite?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Junior's Section

Today's look contains the same three colors as my inspiration photo - I just switched them around! I've been loving lavender so much lately. When I saw these jeans, I immediately snapped them up. They are from the junior's section, which brings me to today's topic. You may have noticed that all of the items from my recent shopping trip are from the junior's section. This was not from lack of trying. I tried on at least 20 things from the women's section but didn't like any of them - and then wound up buying 3 out of 5 items I tried on the junior's section, which made me chuckle. :-)

In all seriousness though, this is a topic I find myself discussing with other women in their 20's often. The junior's section can be cut too short, and feel too young. The women's section can be too boxy, and feel too old. So what's a girl to do? I'm personally a big fan of buying the best from both and mixing them together. My tips for each department:

Junior's section:

  • Fit. The fit works well for petite women, especially those who can't find their size in the women's section. (I know I often struggle with the smallest women's sizes being too big.) Junior's jeans also often have a more "trendy" cut, whereas women's jeans often have a higher rise. Clothes are short though (especially dresses), so buyer beware. Most clothing is not work appropriate in this section.
  • Value. Prices are often lower, but the quality is also lower. There are exceptions - like the 100% silk tops I've purchased at F21. Overall, be cautious when selecting fabrics in this section.
  • My recommendations. Stick to casual clothes for the weekend such as jeans, shorts, fun shoes and accessories. Also, buy anything trendy you want to experiment with in this section, as well as tops or dresses you only plan to wear a couple times (such as sundresses for a beach vacation).
Women's section:
  • Fit. Ladies with curves or "girls" (as Stacey London calls them) fit great in the women's section clothes because they have the shape to fill them out. Belts can be a great strategy if you find the fit of a dress or top to be boxy in this section, and I also like tucking in blouses to help minimize the larger fit.
  • Value. Prices are higher, but the quality is also usually much better. Mixing these pieces into an all-juniors wardrobe is a good strategy for looking more polished.
  • My recommendations. Buy pretty much all of your work clothes in this section such as collared shirts, dress pants, work skirts, and suits. I also recommend a classic pair of denim, a handbag, shoes that you can walk in for miles and anything you want to last for years.

Which section do you generally shop in? Are there any junior's vs. women's section woes or successes you've experienced over the years?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Cinco de Mayo

This is what I wore last night for dinner and margaritas in celebration of Cinco de Mayo. This outfit contains so many of my favorite pieces from my closet, and overall I felt very festive (and comfy) for the occasion. If you celebrated Cinco de Mayo, what did you wear?

ps. Just a little heads up that Neosporin can ruin your clothes. Last summer I had a mole removed in my armpit and doctor's orders were Neosporin with no bandaid. Unfortunately this permanently darkened the underarm area of this shirt, making it look (in some lighting) like I'm sweating on that side. Lovely. :-)

Today's Everyday Fashion: Classic Prep

Seriously, who doesn't want to be a stylish mom after seeing this inspiration photo? I loved this spread in a J.Crew catalog about a year ago, and decided to give it my own spin this week. Shorts and wedges make the look more comfy casual (and no longer work appropriate), but ultimately I love the classic preppiness of both versions. Below, I'm showing you my latest Stella & Dot acquisitions. I've been wearing S&D jewelry for close to two years now and I've found it to be the only costume jewelry that doesn't tarnish, so in my opinion they are totally worth the investment. I focused on bracelets and rings this order since I wear those daily (and those pieces tend to turn green the fastest). How would you wear today's look and which S&D piece is your favorite?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Wackadoodle

Whoa there, crazy pants. Those were pretty much my exact thoughts when I saw this inspiration photo of Jessica Alba. Despite my trepidations, I decided to take the trend for a spin. My pants are more psychedelic while hers are floral, but in either case this is one trend I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving the house in. I love her shoes though, and if you are brave enough to wear a printed pant then I think a modern, slim fit like hers (or the ones below) are the way to go. Would you ever wear this trend?
