Today's Everyday Fashion: Multiples

Today I'm sharing one of my favorite tricks for making getting dressed easier. It's buying multiples - but not the same item, different color - a different item, same color! For example, I recently had a shopping client who wanted a white pencil skirt for work, so we also added white jeans to her closet, because any outfit we created with the skirt, would also work with jeans. I also do this with shoes. I have five versions of cognac shoes (my favorite shoe color) - the boot, the pump, the wedge, the flat and the sandal. Sound excessive? Well, it actually makes things really easy. I always have a matching shoe, because most outfits match all five pairs of shoes - it's just a determination of which heel height I want to go with, based on the practicality of my day.

That's how I wound up with these red shorts. They were an exact color match to my favorite red pants, so I immediately scooped them up. These are two of my favorite outfits, so being able to convert them into spring/summer outfits with shorts was a no-brainer! Have you ever tried this trick?

ps. As you know, I was recently sent a box of clothes for the Lauren Conrad blogging contest. Most of the items weren't my size, so I returned them in exchange for Kohl's store credit. I used it to buy the red shorts, along with these lavender jeans and mint shorts, which I'll be posting outfits with soon! :-) (I also got these blush pumps, but I'm still deciding.)

Today's Everyday Fashion: Retail Inspiration

I snapped this picture at J.Crew with my phone last summer and decided to re-create it with my own clothes this week. The purple and blue tones go great together, but I think it's the unexpected mix of the gray cardigan and brown leopard accents that make it oh-so-J.Crew (and chic). Pencil skirts work way better for my body type, so that was one thing I wanted to change about the look, but otherwise I dig the way they styled it. How would you modify this look for your own office?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Wedding Reception

The style question I hear the most is "what should I wear to a wedding?" My response is to think about the climate and the venue, because no two weddings are the same, and those can be your best clues as to what's appropriate! This Sunday I attended Ashley's wedding reception. They were married earlier this month up north, and held a casual outdoor BBQ for friends and family to celebrate. I would usually consider a sundress to be too casual for a wedding, but for this reception it was perfect. Above I'm showing you how I would wear it to church or another indoor event, below is how I was planning to wear it, and below that is how I actually wore it (I was exhausted, so I went for flats). I also wanted to show you how adorable Ashley looked in her lace dress and cowboy boots! How do you determine what's appropriate to wear to a wedding?

ps. I originally shared this dress in my shopping post here. I claimed that it reached my knees and I must've been out of my mind because it most definitely does not. It's certainly longer than most F21 dresses (esp. for being a size S) but it's nowhere near my knees. Sorry for being scatter-brained! ;-)

Today's Everyday Fashion: Office Neutrals

Today's look is super-similar to my inspiration; the only big difference is the position of the belt! I wanted to show off the peplum ruffles on my shirt so I left it untucked, but a belt was still necessary. Why, you may ask? Well, when wearing a shirt that has a box shape such as this one, I find that a belt gives it some much needed curve. I also love the idea of wearing a blouse untucked to cover up the top of a high-waisted skirt. When it comes to making office wear "fun" I usually turn to bright colors but I think this look proves you can do it with neutrals too! Do you prefer wearing neutrals or bright colors to the office?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Wine, Women & Shoes

Yesterday I attended Wine, Women & Shoes in Orlando and this is what I wore! I was honored to be the judge of the "Best in Shoe" contest, and spent the day scoping out everyone's shoes and picking three winners. For my own ensemble, these lime bow shoes were the obvious choice from my closet. I chose the turquoise dress next (see the last time I wore it here), and I accessorized with a lime green belt and necklace to tie in the shoes. It was colorful and with the accessory changes, it felt like a brand-new dress again. I ended the event with a long session of Mexican food and margaritas with the girls, and overall was such a fun day/night! What fun shoes would you wear if you attended Wine, Women & Shoes?

Also - this is the outfit I originally put together for the event! The day before, I decided it was too short and loose to wear up on stage (a little test revealed it was not my best idea). I love this outfit, but I'll be returning the dress since it's way too short!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Strawberries

The inspiration photo is like a pretty strawberry. The varying pink tones are the fruit, the buttons are the seeds and her belt is the green stem. I decided to dive right into my own closet to see if I could come up with something similar. I have mixed feelings about my own look - the skirt and belt together are a little bit Christmas, and while I love mixing orange and pink, all of it together may be a bit too much. I'll let you guys decide though - would you wear a strawberry-inspired look?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Paisley

This is what I wore yesterday for errands and to the Central Florida Lady Bloggers meet-up! I think inspiration photos must creep into my subconscious because I put together this outfit, and then later found the Vogue picture hiding in my inspiration folder. I have more than a thousand images saved, but my outfit is so similar I think it's safe to say my brain copied without even realizing it! I'm really picky about prints, but this paisley won me over immediately and I love wearing big, billowy blouses to balance out shorter hemlines when it's hot. Are you a fan of paisley/would you wear this look?

Today's Everyday Fashion: An Outfit

I've had this shirt for several months, but so far have only worn it with shorts or jeans to run errands, certainly nothing special enough to call an outfit. This photo inspired me to get out my plum jeans, a leopard purse, nude heels - and for the first time in this shirt, I felt "dressed." Which got me thinking, when do clothes become an outfit? Is it a certain number of accessories? An amount of effort or creativity? I'm sure this answer is different for everyone, so tell me what you think. What makes the difference between feeling "dressed" versus just wearing clothes?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Crazy Stripes

I wanted the look of a striped dress without actually owning a striped dress, so I got creative in my closet and put together this top and skirt. They don't exactly match - the skirt is navy and ivory and the shirt is black and ivory - so those are some crazy stripes! This outfit is a little more rock-n-roll than my usual style but I have to say I dig it for a concert or a night out. Would you wear mixed stripes?

A note on the jacket: it has unfinished hems, which I love the look of, but yesterday I noticed it's unraveling in one place (some sequins are coming off). I never want to mislead anyone in their purchase so please beware of this little factoid if you are considering buying it! :-) I still recommend it ($15 is a steal), and I plan to keep wearing it after trimming off the loose sequins.

Today's Everyday Fashion: Repeat Shopping

I was shopping online a few weeks ago and came across this picture on ASOS. I loved the skirt and wanted to buy it (it's only $36), but after mulling it over I realized I already had a similar skirt! So I saved the photo to use as inspiration with my own clothes instead. The tank and skirt are an obvious match, but the inspiration photo gets all the credit for the shoes. This outfit also looks great with a shrunken navy blazer (below), making it a super-easy day to night look. Have you ever bought an item only to realize you already had a similar one at home?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Take Two

This is me on the way to church yesterday! I originally styled this outfit with a H&M bird-print shirt and hot pink shoes (below), but I didn't love it, so I returned the top and started fresh. I found the floral tank on last week's shopping trip, and instantly felt like it would be the perfect thing to complete the look. Sometimes my first attempt doesn't always work out, but my mantra is to try, try again. Have you ever found success after a failed first attempt at an outfit?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Mint Condition

The color "mint" could not be more popular right now, which rocks because it's always been a personal favorite of mine! I dig mixing different shades of the color - such as this shirt and necklace I've had for a couple years, and my new turquoise shoes. Paired with yellow and camel, this is definitely a winning color combination in my book! Are you crazy for the mint trend? Would you wear this color combo?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Playing in My Closet

Today I'm sharing a couple monochromatic "experiments" I recently tried while playing in my closet. The picture above is my attempt to re-create the look of a crochet dress + neon belt (love her outfit!) - without actually owning a crochet dress. It looks a bit like a dress, but I'm also not sure if I'm completely sold. Below, I gave Katie Holmes relaxed glam look a try with a sequin top, loose trousers and flat sandals. So comfy, and while not my personal style, it could be a great going out look for someone who only wears flats. What are your thoughts on my two fashion "experiments"? Would you wear them?

This month I wasn't allowed to buy blazers or pencil skirts. (I am weak, I still tried some on!) ;-) My priorities were prints, shorts, and pink jeans. I struck out on finding pink jeans, but found a few prints and a pair of shorts to add to my closet!

1. A new sundress wasn't necessarily on my wish list, but I know I'll wear this to death. I was also psyched to find something at F21 that is not super-short (and fits true to size!).
2. A fun dress with a Kentucky Derby vibe for an event I have coming up.
3. Similar to my H&M turquoise bubble necklace that I wear constantly. And I never tire of blush pink.
4. You may remember this shirt from last month's post! The price was great, so I decided to snatch it up.
5. Florals were a high priority this month and an outfit idea popped into my head when I saw this top. Sold.
6. Shorts were also a high priority this month! Love the fray and the length is perfect.
7. I've had my eye on this Tory Burch-esque necklace for awhile, and at $12 I couldn't pass it up.
8. Another print to add to my closet. I love this colorful paisley.

My May Wish List
Here's what I'm shopping for next month - shorts galore, flat sandals, and pink jeans will finally be mine! I also ordered the two Old Navy tops online (save an extra 20-30% right now). I'm excited to see how they look in person!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Blue-Green

I originally set out to re-create this inspiration from head to toe. The skirt and shirt were the same color, and I had my orange purse and black pumps ready to go. But as soon as I put on the shirt and skirt, I knew I wanted to go a different direction. I started digging for more blue-green in my closet - the shoes are almost an exact match, and the green belt and purse felt like the perfect finishing touches. I love office looks like these that show you can be appropriate (skirt to your knees, no cleavage or small straps up top) and yet fun and colorful at the same time. Would you wear this to work?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Roadmap

Sometimes I see an inspiration photo and the most random combinations pop into my head. Today's outfit is quite different from my inspiration photo, and yet, it was the roadmap to my own look. Her coral purse and striped shirt brought to mind my shirt and blazer, that seemed to be a match in my closet just waiting to happen. Her denim shirt reminded me of my faded jeans. And her nude sandals were a stepping stone to my nude pumps. How would you make this look your own?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Comfort Wins

Sometimes, what looks best in an outfit is not always the most practical. This week I needed an outfit for my consulting gig. I'll be on my feet for hours doing employee trainings, creating lookbooks, and taking photographs so comfy shoes were of the utmost importance. Sky-high shoes may look pretty but they don't always cut it in the real world. Both of these shoes are fairly comfy, but the wedges will probably win this round, based on comfort alone! Do you usually choose comfort over style or vice versa?

Today's Everyday Fashion: My Shoe Secret

Click to view larger. Blazer is navy; shoes are black.

Colin Stuart shoes are quickly becoming my favorite. They are sold exclusively at Victoria's Secret.com, and my little shoe secret -- lately I've been picking them up at MJR Sales for a steal! I think this is my fourth pair, and I'm pretty much hooked. They generally retail for around $100, are super-comfy and you can find them for $20-30 at MJR. My strategy with shoes is always to buy higher quality name-brand shoes for a discount at stores like DSW, Ross, or Marshalls, because higher quality shoes are really important to both comfort and durability (see more on my shoe buying tips/strategies in this post). This black pair is my most recent score, and I'm loving the unique, angular platforms as a fun spin on your basic black pump. What are some of your favorite stores to shop for shoes?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Bridal Shower

Yesterday I had the pleasure of celebrating my friend Ashley's upcoming nuptials at her bridal shower. It was so much fun meeting her family and co-workers (I met Ashley back in the day from this post), and I volunteered myself as unofficial photographer (including a group shot using a self-timer, where I somehow managed to look like a giant). I wore this hot little chevron number I recently picked up at Modern Vintage Boutique (Ashley was wearing chevron too!). My nude pumps match the nude stripe in the dress, and I wanted to add more yellow with my belt and cardigan. It was love at first sight when I spotted this dress online and I'm excited to finally have something chevron in my closet! What do you typically wear to bridal showers? Have you tried chevron yet?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Muscle Tee

Buying this shirt was totally out of character for me. Sure, I enjoy a good graphic tee (see this post). But a muscle tee? This was a first. I brought the shirt home and a couple weeks later remembered this Kate Bosworth photo and it all made sense. I love Kate's Coachella look from last year and couldn't be more excited to re-create it. I did one version with shorts and one with pants, both of which I'm loving for running errands. Sometimes all it takes to feeling stylish is stepping just a little bit outside of your comfort zone. Do you like wearing graphic tees? Which outfit is your favorite?
