Today's Everyday Fashion: How Much Color

I'm not shy about color, and I wouldn't hesitate to wear a bold look like this around town. This week I had a Skype session with a girl working in a business casual environment in the Midwest though. We talked at length about how much color you can get away with in the office. It's not just about "what if someone doesn't like my outfit?" When you work in an office, you also have to consider - is this going to make my boss uncomfortable? Am I going to look like I'm showing off? Will people be so distracted by my clothes, that they miss my skills and hard work? Ultimately I think we found a place where she is comfortable - fun, colorful clothes without going too far (and we made more than 30 new outfits from her closet!). I would love to hear where you fall on the color spectrum - would you rock a head-to-toe colorful look like this to work (or elsewhere)?

ps. Yesterday's Olivia Palermo inspiration was more of a literal translation whereas today I took her periwinkle + hot pink combo and ran with it. And just kept running. :-)

pps. In a work environment, proceed with caution on the length of this skirt, it might be a couple inches too short for some work places. Also, the middle outfit is meant to be daytime, while the right outfit I removed the cardigan + added a brooch for an easy switch into more of a nighttime look!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Style Icon

I keep finding so many Olivia Palermo outfits to love, I'm officially declaring her one of my style icons! I've copied a few other Olivia looks, you can see them here, here, and here. Today's outfit would have looked just as great with black skinny jeans (and been appropriate for work that way!) but I decided to give it my own spin with black shorts, to beat the Florida heat. Do you dig Olivia Palermo's style as much as I do? How would you wear this look?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Outfit Stalking

Today's look is the result of many months of outfit stalking! I was immediately smitten with this outfit when I first saw it about 6 months ago. It is hugely responsible for the purchase of my camel jeans several months ago, and it was a big factor in the recent purchase of these hot pink pumps. I just had to have an outfit similar to hers and I think the result is pretty close! Have you ever fixated on an outfit and re-created the whole thing?

Today's Everyday Fashion: A Little Retro

Oh, how this color combo makes me smile! I did an office look with turquoise + mustard here, but I'm loving this casual take on it, too. I originally put together this outfit for my trip to Austin, but it was freezing the whole time so it stayed in my suitcase. Now I'm sure I'll be sporting this around town for errands more than once this spring! Do you love turquoise and mustard together as much as I do?

Today's Everyday Fashion: New Gear

The occasion: a family get-together on a Sunday afternoon. Why I wore it: like a little kid after Christmas, I couldn't wait to wear some of my new clothes! My striped shirt and orange skirt are a nautical match made in heaven, so I paired them together with a gold chain (also nautical). I think many different shoes would go great with this outfit, but I chose nude wedges because they are comfy, and also dressed down enough for a casual occasion! Where would you wear this outfit?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Spring Staples

A lot of readers have asked what I wear when "very casual" and this is a great example of a running errands outfit for me! I also wear wedges a lot, but when a day calls for tons of walking or I'm sore from working out, I turn to cute flat sandals like these. I also insist on adding a pop of color or a big necklace to make it more fun. I recently picked up this hot pink silk shirt and I have a feeling it's going to be a major staple for me this spring! (See it in a past outfit here.) Would you wear this for running errands?

My March Budget

2. H&M electric blue pencil skirt, $18 (similar)
3. Limited lime pencil skirt, $25 (similar)
4. H&M striped shirt, $18 (similar)
5. H&M periwinkle blazer, $30 (similar)
6. H&M graphic tee, $15 (similar)
7. Old Navy plaid shirt, $15
8. H&M red orange cardigan, $18 (similar)

Grand Total = $208

1. Banana was having a 50% off promotion yesterday and while I was tempted to buy the entire store, I decided to splurge on one item and get this coral blazer. It is so gorgeous in person and I can see myself wearing it for many, many years to come!
2. An electric blue pencil skirt! I have been wanting one of these for a couple years now. Was a total no-brainer. The quality at H&M varies but this skirt looks great in person!
3. I have admired this lime skirt at Limited in the past, but wasn't planning to buy it. That is, until I saw it on sale for $25! Total score, so I snapped it up.
4. I have been wanting a striped shirt exactly like this for over a year! Way excited to cross this item off my shopping to-do list.
5. I'm still on the fence about this blazer. I love the powder blue color, and I got it for 50% off (woo hoo) but I still need to figure out how to style it.
6. Total impulse buy. Sometimes I see graphic tees and just can't resist. I tend to dress very sweet/girlie and appreciate the roughness of this piece.
7. The plaid shirt I bought at Old Navy a couple months ago turned out to be a total bust. (I made the rookie mistake of not trying it on before I bought it, and didn't realize it was too small for me until I removed the tags.) So... I gave myself permission to snap up this pretty pastel plaid that is lightweight enough for spring and fits like a dream. (I'll be donating or selling the other one.)
8. An orange red cardigan - another item I've had on my wish list for awhile, and am happy to cross off!

I also bought these items with a c/o gift card (that I've had for awhile):

1. LOFT orange mini skirt, $30
2. LOFT emerald sweater, $20

My April wish list: I spotted these adorable items while I was out and about. I will be adding light pink jeans to my closet in April, plus hopefully a couple of the other pieces!

8. New York and Company print dress, $64.95
9. Limited light pink shirt, $49.90
10. Candie's purple platforms, $24.99

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Leopard Pump

I'm no stranger to this color combo. In fact, you can see similar looks here and here. The game changer, then? Definitely leopard pumps. They put a new spin on my love of pastels, and add a retro vibe to the look (in fact, my shoes were part of the Mad Men collection at Banana). Don't you love it when you add a key piece to your closet and it makes everything feel new again? ps. Not sure why the disparity in shoe color between the two photos, but the right is more true to life. Are leopard pumps a staple in your closet yet?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Kiss It Goodbye

It already feels like summer here in Orlando, so this is my last winter outfit on the blog! Winter, I'm officially kissing you goodbye. :-) You may recall I didn't love the first way I styled this vest (I called it "The Wookie") but surprisingly, I like this second take on it - with it layered over a blazer in a work look! Is it officially spring where you live yet? Would you wear a fur vest over a blazer to work?

Today's Everyday Fashion: SXSW Recap

How I planned to wear it

As you guys know, I recently embarked on a crazy 8-day adventure to Austin, TX. I got to do some amazing, cool stuff. Here are some highlights and a recap of what I wore!

Dress: Forever 21, $20 (similarsimilar)
Scarf: c/o Happy Scarf, $24
Belt: Gap, $10
Boots: Grifter c/o Chinese Laundry, $149
Sandals: Diba from Nordstrom Rack, $40
Leather jacket: Banana Republic, $150
Cardigan: Gap, $18
Purse: Calvin Klein from TJ Maxx, $120
Rings: LOFT pink stone ring $11, My Stella & Dot website $49
Watch: Michael Kors, family gift

How I actually wore it

TxSC panel

1. Speaking at Texas Style Council. First let's talk about my favorite outfit of the week, this mint number above. When Indiana learned that I was going to be in Austin for SXSW, she asked me to be on a panel at TxSC on "blogging lessons learned." I didn't pack the ideal outfit to wear to a fashion blogging conference (I was already on the road when we scheduled it) so while I love this outfit in general, I definitely would have chosen a pencil skirt or something dressy if given my whole closet to choose from! :-) I was beyond honored to be on the panel with Jen, Elizabeth, Kyla, and Molly and wish I could've attended more of this awesome conference with 200+ stylish women!

Team pit stop in New Orleans

2. Roadtrip with Chevy. Backing up a little - let's talk about how this whole trip got started! Chevy asked me to be a team captain for SXSW this year, meaning my team and I road-tripped in a (super-comfy) Tahoe from Florida to Austin and back - all to raise money for Adopt-A-Classroom. These are two of my roadtrip outfits above. The classroom visits to see the kids were the highlight of this trip! You can see more pictures on our team website here. We raised more than $1000 and I couldn't be more proud.

3. Attending SXSW. Beyond the road trip, Adopt-A-Classroom, and TxSC I also attended 2 days of SXSW, which is the largest social media conference in the US (more than 30,000 people attend). This was a total dream come true for a marketing nerd like me. (I gotta be honest, SXSW is way more up my alley than NY Fashion Week!!) When we got to Austin, we were treated like royalty by Chevy and got to attend tons of different events such as speakers and panels during the day, and parties and networking at night. (I also hung out with three of my sorority sisters who live in Austin - so fun catching up!) The weather was freezing cold and wet, so I lived in these boots. I wore the mint green dress outfit on Sunday, the above outfit above on Saturday, and on Friday I improvised an outfit with these boots (my only close-toe shoes) tucked into jeans, with an ivory top and the same leather jacket. (When I checked the weather before we left, it was vastly different than when we showed up 3 days later! So glad I brought a jacket and boots just in case!)

I'm exhausted and glad to be back! :-) Thanks to everyone who donated to Adopt-A-Classroom and followed our team journey!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Yellow Pumps

Yellow pumps: I bought them on a whim at TJ Maxx about a year ago, almost returned them and wondered if I was a little crazy for buying them in the first place. Fast forward and they are one of my favorite pairs of work shoes! Totally a staple and lately I've been seeing them everywhere. I love a pop of color in a shoe, and this spring I'm hoping to add more colors to my closet like Tiffany blue and these hot pink ones. Do you rock colorful shoes or stick to neutrals?

ps. This is a work outfit, so I just want to specify that I'm wearing a cami under my unbuttoned shirt. :-)

Today's Everyday Fashion: Pinspiration

I gotta admit, I'm pretty excited about my first outfit post inspired by Pinterest! I re-pinned this outfit a few weeks ago and really wanted to give it a try with my clothes. I flipped the inspiration outfit by mixing a lace shirt and polka dot skirt, and finished it off with my favorite new "minimalist" shoes. The result is one of my personal favorites! I think this outfit could work for so many ages (from 20 to 60) and different occasions (some offices, an office party, or even a night out). Would you wear lace + polka dots?

Let's Discuss: Creativity

There are so many lessons I've learned since I first started blogging in 2010. One of the biggest lessons for me though has been making peace with creativity. If you are a left-brain person like me, creativity may scare you death. And even if you are more right-brain, the pressure of a creative job or even a creative blog can be crushing. Thankfully, early in my blogging journey I found this 20-minute TED Talks video by Elizabeth Gilbert, and it literally changed my life. She talks about visualizing creativity as not something that comes from within, but something that is given to you. (Gilbert has many names for the source of someone's "genius," but I personally believe mine comes from God.) I've always been familiar with the idea of "giving God the glory" for your work, but this video says that it's not even your work to begin with. So how did this change things for me?

Well, for starters, I've always been afraid to pursue a creative career. I'm much more comfortable with math equations that have definite answers, than open-ended questions with infinite possibilities. But what I discovered by starting my blog is that I don't even like math equations that much, and further so, it's not what I'm necessarily good at. I excel at creative tasks, but my level of discomfort for them has been keeping me from pursuing a creative life for years. No longer. Here's why:

Image from Squidoo
1. I'm no longer fearful that the ideas will just stop coming. My ideas don't come from within – they are given to me by the Creator of the universe, and I'm pretty sure His ideas won't be drying up anytime soon. I can confidently say almost two years later that there is never a shortage of ideas, just a challenge of picking which ones I have time to develop!

2. My perfectionism no longer impedes my creativity. I thought creativity depended on my own thoughts and ideas, which was way too much pressure for a perfectionist like me, and so I often wouldn't try. Now I know all I need to do, as Gilbert says, is "show up." Do my part and show up and the rest will be given to me. Massive weight on shoulders = now lifted. (Along the same lines, I've come to learn that "fashion mistakes are half the fun." See that previous post here.)

3. I feel the freedom to like my own work. I'm often surprised at the things I come up with, but at the same time felt a level of discomfort for liking it (isn't that, like, the essence of vanity?) or accepting compliments. Now I know that I'm admiring an idea that was given to me, and at the experience of being given this idea, not at my own abilities. Permission to admire, granted.

4. My work is not self-centric. If I hear day after day how great my work is (such as positive comments I receive on my blog), the whole thing becomes about me. If I have a long successful career and people are always telling me how great my work is, and I internalize that, just imagine what kind of person I could possibly become. But I constantly remind myself not take the praise as a personal compliment, but instead as praise to source of the creativity and the process itself. Yes, I absolutely played a part in the process. And maybe I deserve some credit for showing up (see #2). But I'm not the creative source after all, I'm just the conduit.

What are your thoughts on creativity? Do you struggle with being creative or excel at it? What lessons about creativity have you learned throughout the years?

Today's Everyday Fashion: The Skull Scarf

When I visited Europe in September I saw skull scarves everywhere! I picked mine up a few months back, however, I have yet to wear it. I credit this inspiration photo for pushing me to finally give it a try. Another idea I loved: wearing taupe/gray pumps with my camel pants, which is something I'm not sure I would have thought of myself! The skull scarf trend: do you say yay or nay?

Today's Everyday Fashion: March Madness

As a proud alum of basketball-obsessed University of Kansas, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to do an outfit post in celebration of March Madness! I have tons of KU gear that I wear around the house and I decided to style up a couple shirts for attending a game or viewing party. I love both, but the left is my favorite. The red pumps are super-comfy and more my style since I don't usually wear sneakers (I've had these Pumas for at least 5 years and only worn them a couple times).  Both are cute though and I'm excited to watch the games this year! What team(s) do you support and how do you wear your team gear?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Print Mixing

If you look closely, you can see ivory polka dots on my skirt - meaning I'm rocking not two, but three different prints in this outfit! I love this look inspired by Jenna Lyons and think it's right on-trend with the print mixing we are seeing everywhere and just somehow "works." I would definitely wear this to a fashion event, or even to nice brunch. What is your print limit? Would you rock three at one time?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Skirting the Issue

I love the idea of pairing your brights with all-black so you can wear them in the winter! I was inspired by Kristen Bell to give it a try myself. I love this look for a cold night out, or even to wear to work (this skirt is a tad short, but the tights make it more appropriate and could work for many jobs). Is a pop of color in an all-black ensemble a look that you would wear?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Which Boots

These?

Or these?

I think I like the first ones better for night, and the second ones better for a daytime event? What do you guys think? (I'm trying to decide which pair to pack for Austin.)

Also - I wore the second outfit (flat boots) in Paris, and have never experienced so many people pointing and talking about me in my life! My goal for dressing in Paris was not to look like a Parisian, but a stylish American (trying to own my tourist-y self), so I totally get that I might have stood out. But to this day I'm still not sure why my outfit was such a topic of conversation! It was super comfy for a day at the Louvre, and I personally felt very good in it. But if you are European or spent a lot of time there, I would love to hear your theories, because it still puzzles me and I love learning about dress codes in other cultures! :-) Was I breaking an unspoken code?

Today's Everyday Fashion: New Again

These are my favorite kinds of outfits. All the pieces are old (except the shoes), but when you put them all together, they create something new. I've had this combo hanging in my closet for years (the navy skirt and shirt are more than 3 years old!) and never thought to put it together this way. I always say that our closets are full of outfits just waiting to be created and this is a great example! I dare you to give it a try in your own closet. ;-)
