Today's Everyday Fashion: Chain Strap Purse

Inspiration: http://www.koo.im via Who What Wear
leather-sleeve-trench-outfit.png

This photo inspired me to pair a black and white colorblock top with red plaid. Leopard pumps felt like too much with my version, so I went for more colorblocking with a leather sleeve trench and gold and black shoes. One thing our outfits do have in common - a chain strap purse. I can't get enough of this style and there are so many cute options under $100 right now - see below. The baby pink one is calling my name!

If I lived in a colder climate, I would wear Fair Isle sweaters all. the. time. I contemplated buying the one in my inspiration photo, and the first one below. Practicality won out in both cases, but that didn't stop me from trying to re-create a Fair Isle outfit anyway. I used a bib necklace to mimic the patterned neckline over a mustard sweater and paired it with turquoise cropped pants. I prefer the original, but I'm always happy to find a new outfit that's already in my closet - and I can't say I would've thought to pair this together otherwise. Fair Isle sweaters: yea or nay?

This catalog photo is partly what inspired me to purchase this houndstooth skirt a few months ago. I love the idea of adding red accents to houndstooth and pairing similar black and white patterns together. It's also an outfit idea for National Wear Red Day on Feb. 7th (more below). If you feel like you don't look good in red, a red shoe or skirt or anything away from the face can be an easy way to wear it!

I experimented with adding this faux fur collar to ivory and camel jackets in a recent post. Today I'm trying a darker (black) jacket for more of a contrast. Whether you like the look of faux fur or not, it undoubtedly keeps you nice and warm. I rounded up my top 20 picks for faux fur under $150 - check it out on Babble here, or click image below. Are you a fan of the faux fur trend? Which faux fur item do you think is easiest to pull off - snood, gloves, jacket, vest, etc.?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Factory Deals

I wish every single one of the J.Crew Factory items below would get in my closet right now. They are currently offering an extra 40% off clearance with code SALE40. The majority of my favorites are new arrivals so I won't be purchasing just yet, but today's outfit features a Factory top that's on sale here. My necklace has leopard print in it, so leopard shoes were an obvious fit, and a fun departure from the usual black shoes/black top combo. I love leopard and pink, so a pink clutch was the finishing touch. How would you accessorize a black lace top? Which picks do you like below?

I love this pink tweed blazer so much - especially after paying only $17 in the after holiday sales! ($67 sale price, plus I used a $50 Gap reward.) The sleeves are lined with a blue stripe pattern inside, so a blue striped shirt underneath is a natural fit. The inspiration photo is beyond adorable, and I'd love to pair the top half with white jeans in the spring. For now a navy pencil skirt or jeans will work for the dreary weather we've been having lately. How would you wear a pink blazer? Would you wear the inspiration photo?

10 Style Lessons Learned

Screen shot 2014-01-15 at 10.01.30 AM.png

In high school I wore sneakers 100% of the time. Fashion magazines were fun, but being fashionable wasn't something I attempted in my own life until I got to college. It was a wobbly start, and I've had more fashion fails in the last 10 years than I care to recount. My style is totally different now, but more importantly the percentage of fashion wins has gone way up. That's how I define successful personal style - "wins" are the number of days your outfit makes you feel fabulous, and allows you to conduct your day with comfort and ease. In the past 10 years, I've learned a lot about style. So today I'm sharing my top 10 Style Lessons Learned:

1. Mistakes are half the fun.

I'm a recovering perfectionist, so I get it - mistakes are uncomfortable. Nobody wants to make a fashion faux pas that will have the whole room abuzz. Looking back at some of my old style photos? I can hardly contain my laughter. But ultimately stepping out of your comfort zone and making mistakes are necessary for crafting your ultimate personal style. Learn to embrace the mistakes and don't fear taking a risk!

2. Never shop without a budget.

Having a budget may sound like a kill joy, but it actually makes shopping more fun. I used to feel guilty about buying any clothes at all, but now if it's in the budget, I don't even sweat it. I'm also a terrible decision-maker and having a budget makes that process so much more enjoyable. If you find a blazer you love that is marked down 80% to $100 - do you buy it? If your budget is $500, then sure! If your budget is $150 though, it might be a good idea to pass. Budgets: never leave home without one.

3. Fit is everything.

I've always had a knack for colors and patterns but it has been a long, upward battle for me to conquer fit. In high school, I was completely oblivious. Didn't have my size? No worries, I'll just get one that doesn't fit . As long as I liked the design, fit wasn't even a consideration. But fit, my friends, is everything. Don't ever settle for too big, too small or just-not-quite-right. Unsure how it fits? Snap a photo in a mirror or ask a friend to take one for you. And find a good tailor, for those moments when you love something but the fit needs a little tweaking.

4. You can never please everyone.

Surely, there is a universal outfit that all of us would like? Turns out, there's not. Play it safe and someone will think it's boring. Let your creativity fly and someone will think it's too flashy. You can never please everyone, and that's truly okay. When we realize it's not even possible, then we are free to let go of the goal of pleasing everyone. Focus instead on pleasing just one person - you! - and feeling amazing in whatever you are wearing.

5. There's no shame in using a recipe to cook.

Nobody would fault you for using a recipe to cook, and I think style is the same. Using the things that inspire you - that girl on the street, Pinterest, celebrities - to create new outfits is totally cool and a great way to sharpen your own personal style. Take what you like, change what you don't, and voila - your very own outfit that reflects your unique style.

6. It's not about the clothes, but the memories you make in them.

Clothing may be art in many cases, but at their core they are a utility - a necessary way we cover our nakedness each day. If something is uncomfortable, too hot, itchy - clothes can distract from what we are doing. I'm all for a reasonable amount of "suffering for fashion" once in a while, but ultimately I prefer clothes that give me the freedom to say "yes" to whatever comes up like an impromptu walk outside. What really matters is where you wore it, what happened, and who you were with.

7. Style rules were made to be broken.

Black and brown? White after Labor Day? Miniskirts after 30? Yes, yes, and yes! The thing about style is that it's art, and art is impossible to define. Not having rules or formulas to follow can make getting dressed frustrating. But try thinking of it this way: no rules means ultimate freedom. Dare to break every rule in the book and find your own set of style rules to live by.

8. Buy what you really love.

It's a pretty straightforward concept, but I spent years complicating this process. I only bought things because they were $10, because I was solely focused on being frugal. I would pass on items I loved because I didn't have faith that I could figure out how to wear them (my best brainstorming happens at home - I buy it and figure it out later). Or I would buy "boring" things because I thought I needed more basics (even my basics have a little sizzle and that's totally okay). There are millions of choices out there, and several factors to consider when purchasing an item. Ultimately though I recommend only buying what you really love - that's the best way to wind up with a closet that's quality, not quantity.

9. Plan ahead.

I'm late to everything, and I also can't be creative under fire. So I like brainstorm outfits for events and meetings weeks in advance. I'm not strict about it - there's still plenty of flexibility to adjust to weather, or my personal mood. But I always have a few ideas on hand that I can consider in the coming weeks. I recommend the same for work wear. Take an afternoon to brainstorm your work outfits that week. It may take a few extra minutes up front, but your mornings will be that much faster, and that much more stylish!

10. Style and creativity can be learned.

The ultimate lesson from this post is that yes, you can improve your personal style. Style and creativity are just like any other muscle - exercise them, and they will only get stronger!

What have been your biggest style lessons so far? Which style lessons and resolutions are you working on now?

I've been singing the praises of lace trim tops for a few months now. They look so pretty on their own, paired with jeans or a black skirt. I think they also work well in colder months though - when the design is down the middle of the shirt, you can still get a peek of the lace from underneath a blazer or a open coat. (All my shopping picks below were selected with this trick in mind!) Do you buy tops with multiple seasons in mind? Would you wear Eva's outfit? Miley Cyrus may not be my usual source for fashion inspiration but her ensemble sparked an idea! I paired my new boat sweater with an old striped skirt and red shoes. The result is super cute, but not quite my personal style, so I switched to printed pants and wore it on Saturday. It's the same basic idea with a spin (and a fit I like better on me). In my daily posts here I hope to inspire you to do the same - take what you like, spin what doesn't work for you and make it your own! How would you make Miley's outfit work for you?

Whenever I try to show the back of my jeans/pants the photos come out so awkward. (Personally I like to imagine a speech bubble with "hey look at my butt" in it.) Awkwardness aside, I have really been loving these new light wash jeans. My first outfit with them is a January Jones re-creation and I wore it for a casual occasion last week. I don't think I've ever owned a pair of jeans this light before (close, but not quite this light) and I'm enjoying having a new denim option in my closet. Would you wear light wash denim? How would you wear it - distressed, skinny, flared, etc.?

I can't get enough of this plaid blazer. I wore the skirt outfit to a meeting last week, and the fox sweater is something I would wear on weekends. Today's shopping picks (below) are one of my favorite practical shoes. I find totally flat shoes like ballet flats both uncomfortable and I don't like the way they look on my big feet, so a wedge pump is a lifesaver. They look polished in a professional setting but also work for errands, and the low heel height is perfect for days that require a lot of walking. What types of shoes do you find both cute and comfortable? Which plaid blazer outfit is your favorite?

My inspiration is rocking this combo - houndstooth, leather jacket, white shirt, pointy black shoes. I came up with a similar version from my closet for less than the price of her adorable LV purse (similar YSL). Here's what I'm thinking: show an edgier side on the way to work with a motorcycle jacket. Underneath, the black cardigan and high neckline offer a more demure version for the office. To tone it down even more, try cap toe pumps, cap toe flats, or simple black pumps. How would you wear today's inspiration?

I am completely obsessed with Miranda Kerr's outfit, especially her tunic sweater and purse. I gave it my best shot with what I already have in my closet, inserting a bit of rock-n-roll vibe with buckled boots and double-zip jeans. This is my second post with these jeans and I can't get enough of the zipper detail. I rounded up some similar pairs below - the first 3 are under $100 and the rest are pretty pricey. Hopefully more affordable brands will stock this trend soon. Would you wear double zip jeans? Do you like Miranda's outfit?

I love the way printed pants spruce up an outfit. A dressier cousin to printed skinny jeans, they are just a comfortable but add a bit of sophistication! This is one of my all-time favorite color combinations for an outfit. I was inspired to switch it up and add a faux fur collar in the mix and I like the end result even better. It adds a fun twist and it makes any outfit a lot warmer. I tried it with a camel blazer, but it would work just as well with a camel coat, too. Would you wear faux fur trim?

My December Budget

C. Wonder  /  Gap  /  Banana (similar, similar)  /  Gap

Here's what I bought with my December budget!

1. C. Wonder blazer, $90 - The original price on this blazer was $228 so it was a great deal (purchased on sale with an extra 50% off promo going on in store). Still, $90 is a considerable chunk of my monthly budget so I hesitated for a moment. My goal is to buy things I love rather than things that are cheap (you wind up paying less in the long run!), and this blazer fit the bill. It was love at first site and I've already worn it twice.
2. Gap jeans, $48 - Gap jeans are a personal favorite, they fit me well and this season they have some really great washes, especially this particular pair. They had a 40% off promo in the store, so I was sold. I also tried this patched pair - love the concept, but want to keep looking for a different patched pair.
3. Banana blazer, $17 - I've been drooling over this blazer for months so when it finally went on sale after the holidays I had to have it. The sale price was $67 and I used a $50 Gap credit card reward so I only paid $17. I will have this and love it forever.
4. Gap printed pants, $28 - I bought similar printed pants from H&M a couple years ago and they shrunk in the dryer. I've been craving printed pants ever since, and I used an extra 30% off online code to get them for only $28.
5. Forever 21 dress, $28 - I got this while shopping for holiday dresses and just couldn't let it go. I opted not to wear it for NYE or a recent gala - and at both events there were girls wearing the same dress! They both looked great and my day (and the perfect event) with this dress will come. I'm a big believer in getting the perfect dress when you find it, versus waiting until you have an event looming and in a rush you settle on something you don't really love.
6. Old Navy t-shirt, $3 - I wear graphic tees constantly, especially ones in neutral motifs like this one. Always a good addition to my closet.
7. Old Navy sweater, $25 - I used a 15% off coupon code to order this sweater online. It fits smaller than the other Old Navy graphic sweaters (a bonus). I've been wanting a nautical themed sweater for awhile and I have a couple outfit ideas in mind.
8. Forever 21 plaid, $20 - I bought this shirt a couple months ago in the store. I had an almost identical top from two years ago that needed to be replaced, and it was perfect for several holiday events last month.

Total = $259

Banana Republic ($119 today with code BRSALE40)

Now comes the fun part - deciding what to buy in January! This time of year is always so strange - the holidays are behind us, but spring seems so far away. I'm thinking a good closet cleanse and focusing on re-wearing what I already own is a good way to start the year! As a result, I don't have a whole lot on my wish list right now. The black peacoat with removable collar above is such a good deal (I have never owned a black coat!), and I really want a full blush skirt for Valentine's Day (below). But other than that, I'm stumped. What items are on your wish list - trends, colors, styles? What were your best finds during the holidays?

Screen Shot 2014-01-06 at 12.25.53 AM.png
Screen shot 2014-01-06 at 12.49.33 PM.png

Update: I can't believe I forgot to include one of my favorite December purchases - thank you to the reader who reminded me! This gorgeous BCBG dress is $378, and I got it from Bloomingdale's with two coupons for $211.(Links below where you can shop this dress, prices vary.) This purchase wasn't a part of my December budget, but rather a year end or holiday "bonus." I considered using a little extra money to buy bargains in the after holiday sales, I considered buying a new leather purse, but neither of those were speaking to me the way this dress was. Although I don't make purchases like this often (or ever!), I always feel really guilty spending extra money on myself. To counteract that guilt I try to do something positive for someone else, so this year I made a donation more than double the dress price to local families in need anonymously. I felt completely confident with this purchase, love helping others during the holidays, and loved wearing it on NYE. I can't wait to wear it again later this year!

I wore this last night to SoftRock's Giving Gala. Part holiday party, part charity fundraiser, everyone in attendance was required to sign a pledge to donate at least one community service hour per month in 2014. The result was more than 12,000 community service hours pledged and one really fun night! My outfit is from a NYE brainstorming session. I had several friends come over and borrow outfits for NYE and my friend Danielle wore this to ring in the new year. The Nordstrom top is new and I was inspired to go outside my comfort zone and order it. The website shows it with a black bra underneath (hence my initial hesitation), but I can always wear a cami underneath if this version is showing too much skin. For this occasion I went with something in between - a makeshift black bandeau. Have you ever gone outside your comfort zone with fashion? What was the result?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Princess Kate

Let's talk Princess Kate style. Her ensemble is from last year, and she wore it again for Christmas this year (love that). She plays it safe (a princess requirement?), and as a result always looks incredibly classy. As for my own outfit, I picked up this blazer in the after Christmas sales and I'm kind of obsessed. My goal for today's look was to make Kate's inspiration translate to real life. Wear it with flats to run errands, or with black skinny dress pants and a black collared shirt to work. Is Kate one of your style icons? Would you wear green and blue plaid?
