Today's Everyday Fashion: Ivory Jeans

Inspiration: Pinterest
Inspiration: Limited

I skipped a post this weekend so today I'm bringing you two outfits. ;-) Both contain the ivory skinnies I scored on Black Friday. White jeans have been my favorite staple for many summers, so I'm not sure why I waited so long to buy an ivory pair for winter! They look great with boots, aren't breaking the "no white" rule, and yet they add a certain lightness to the usual somber winter colors. Which outfit is more your style? Would you wear ivory jeans in the winter?

Today's Everyday Fashion: On Repeat

Lately I've had the same handful of items on repeat. I can't stop wearing this burgundy cardigan and fringe necklace, my olive military jacket, and the same 3-4 pairs of shoes including the ones in today's post. I think this is largely the reason I feel like I'm in a "style rut" so I've challenged myself to dig deep and find some things I haven't worn in awhile (my closet could use a good deep-cleaning anyway!). What items do you find yourself wearing over and over again?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Military Influence

Inspiration: All the Pretty Birds

Yesterday's outfit was camo skinnies, today's is an olive military jacket, and I've always been a sucker for a navy peacoat. It's safe to say that I'm a big fan of clothes with a military influence! But it was recently brought to my attention that wearing camo can be offensive to our armed forces. Which totally bummed me out, because I have the utmost respect for those men and women in service and I sincerely hope I didn't upset anyone. I had never heard this before about camo, so I asked my Twitter readers for more information:

"From my husband - military Vet- wearing military clothing is fine. Only the patches for rank and isignia are illegal." - Brittany's Pantry
"As a military wife, I or my hubby don't think it is offensive at all." - Michele Smith
"My military husband dislikes camo as fashion, finds it disrespectful. He'd never say anything to someone wearing it though." - Jo Cowan
"It's by no means offensive unless you wear rank or medals you didn't earn, or inappropriate display the US uniform." - Shauna W

These were just a few of the comments, and by no means do they represent the wide range of opinions that people hold on this subject. I did some Googling, and camouflage is first and foremost something that comes from animals, much like we use leopard print on our clothes, we also use camouflage. The military was the first to use it on clothes for combat, and now it is also widely popular for hunters and in the fashion world. I would love to hear what you guys think - is camo offensive? What do you wear or not wear when it comes to "military" inspired clothing?

ps. I ordered these mint jeans from Macy's.com yesterday. Their Friends & Family event - which means 25% off almost everything - ends today, use code FRIEND. I hope these jeans work out!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Camouflage

Inspiration via Real Beauty

I am unofficially naming camouflage as my favorite trend this year. I'm a little surprised at how much I love it, but this photo of Julianne Moore is what did me in. Camo skinnes have been on my shopping wishlist, but I haven't been able to find anything camouflage in stores. After my Black Friday shopping trip came up empty-handed I ordered the pair I'm wearing online from Zara. I don't generally "splurge" on trendy items (they were $60), however, the million times I plan to wear them should bring the cost per wear down to mere pennies. The fit couldn't be better and I love the rear flap pockets. I will be wearing outfit #2 today for the Macy's event - I needed something comfy enough to run around the store in - and it's a great mix of casual cool and glam. Are you a fan of the camouflage trend? Will you be wearing it?

Today's Everyday Fashion: NYE Options

Option 1
Option 2

I may not have set plans for New Year's Eve yet, but I'm already contemplating what to wear! I recently fell in love with both of these sparkly options on the Lily + Violet website and they let me try both (I'm sending one back). I'm having the toughest time deciding between the two because I like both for different reasons. I did some research on additional sequined options; see my picks for under $100 below. Which dress do you like better? What are you wearing on NYE this year?

Dress #2: BB Dakota/ Lily + Violet, $84

This Thursday, Dec. 6 from 6-8 p.m. at Orlando Harley-Davidson, I'll be attending and co-emceeing Belles, Bubbles & Bikes. The event is free but RSVP is required, email dhardies@americanroad.biz to attend. Hope to see you then!

How To Save Money On Clothes

I may not be totally confident in my ability to put a stylish outfit together, but one area I feel very qualified in is scoring amazing deals at the mall. In fact, this little talent was the main reason I started blogging! Years of working in retail and as a secret shopper (mostly in college), coupled with crazy frugal tendencies has lead to me having quite a few tricks for making those dollars stretch. Today I'm sharing my Top 10 tips for saving money at retail stores* (think $14 cardigans at Banana! $15 silk shirts at Ann Taylor!). You can also watch me give these tips on TV here.

1. Shop in-store, not online. I wouldn't take online shopping completely off the table, but I will say that prices are often a lot lower in retail stores than they are online. My theory for this is that stores don’t have the physical space to hold as many clothes, so they are much more likely to mark things down, whereas online stores use big warehouses and they are in less of a hurry to cut prices. I do almost all of my shopping in stores, and I often find the exact same pieces for up to 70% less in person. (Plus you get to try them on.)

2. Use coupons and promos. Before you head to the mall, I recommend taking a moment to gather coupons and bring them with you. My favorite way is to set up a free email account and sign up for emails from your favorite retailers. Then, check your inbox for coupons right before you leave. You can also try coupon websites like RetailMeNot and CheapSally, or collect coupons via snail mail and go through the stack before you leave the house. Still come up empty-handed? Don't be shy about asking the store manager if there are promos going on that day. I often find they have coupon codes they are willing to share, and there's more wiggle room and potential for negotiating than you may think. And if you qualify, don't forget to ask for student and/or military discounts.

3. Pay attention to the calendar. Black Friday might be a great time to shop for electronics, but it's not necessarily the best time for clothes. There are two main “seasons” in retail, and when those seasons switch are the best two times to save money. These switches occur right after Christmas/New Years, and at the end of June. I often save my budget and spend more during that time to get more bang for my buck. On Black Friday you will see lots of promos, but during the seasonal switches you will see mark downs and promos, resulting in prices that are up to 50% less than they were on Black Friday.

4. Determine the retail cycle. Beyond the two major retail seasons, stores have smaller retail cycles where they get new merchandise in, and mark old items down, and so on. When new clothes go on the floor at full price, the old stuff is reduced (= great time to deals). A few weeks later, they start marking down the new stuff, with smaller discounts. (= great time to buy the new arrival shirt you love on promo, so you don't wait too long and miss it). A few weeks later, they get ready for the next shipment and a lot of the store goes on sale (= another great time to get deals). How to find out where you are in the cycle? Just ask. Questions like “when is your next round of markdowns?” or “when is the new line coming in?” are both game. Stores will be happy to share this information with you. More general info such as what days TJ Maxx gets in new merchandise, or what day of the week Gap does markdowns, can also be a big help.

5. Predict future markdowns. Finding out how long an item has been in the store can help you decide if now is a good time to buy it. If a store just got the item, but only a few are left, then you probably won’t get a clearance price and a coupon or promo is your best bet. BUT if an item has been in the store for awhile and there are tons left, then you can usually count on that item being marked down even lower. If you are willing to risk it, I recommend coming back in a week or two, and you will often find that that item is marked down another 20-50%.

6. Look outside the sale rack. As a budget shopper it can be really easy to put on blinders and race to the back of the store and only look at the clearance section. But you actually want to look elsewhere for your best deals. When retailers have tons of one item left, that they will often put them on a rack together, not mixed in with other clearance items. So look for sale signs throughout the store, and not just clearance in the very back, because those items with many left are usually the cheapest items in the store.

7. Check multiple stores. If you find the deal of a lifetime but it doesn't fit, then don't give up. Find out if another store in your area has that same item in your size. A short drive could be worth it, and some stores will even ship that item to your house directly from a nearby store.

8. Acknowledge regional differences. I travel a lot, and I try to buy seasonal items that are less popular in that city. I shop for summer clothes in North Dakota, and you can score big on winter coats in Florida. This also means acknowledging the cost of living. I find that shopping in Florida at the same retailers I loved in Boston are much cheaper, due to the lower cost of living in this state, so keep in mind where you are geographically.

9. Sign up for credit cards. We’ve all been harassed by well-meaning sales people to sign up for the store credit card. If you don’t shop there often, are not good with credit cards, or are working on improving your credit score, then it’s best to say no. But if you spend a lot of money at that store, and pay off the balance in full each month (so you’re not paying super-high interest rates), then it is something to consider. Stores often give card-holders exclusive coupons, and even better, some send you rewards like $10 for every $200 you spend. Look into this option for the 1-2 stores you love for additional savings.

10. Make friends with a manager. Many higher end stores will put you on an email list for exclusive events and sales that are local to you, and if you befriend a manager or store associate, they more than happy to keep an eye on an item for you and/or let you know when specific markdowns are happening. Having a friend in the store can really help.

What are your tips and tricks for saving money at the mall?

*This post is specifically about saving money and getting the best prices at retail stores such as Gap, Banana, Limited, etc. It is not about saving money overall. For tips along those lines see this post.

Today's Everyday Fashion + Win a Wallet from Thirty-One Gifts

Guys, I might be in a bit of a style rut. I think fashion is fun and usually I enjoy it but lately it's frustrating me! I'm hoping to break the streak soon; in the meantime here are two looks with my favorite baby blue shirt. I wore the top outfit for a lunch meeting and to the CFL Lady Bloggers Meetup yesterday. I don't necessarily love this outfit (although I really like the blue + burgundy color combo) and don't get me started on how not perfect the photography is (I used natural lighting as always, but the sun is only shining on the middle for some reason). The bottom outfit I photographed awhile ago, and would be really cute with nude pumps. Have you ever been in a style rut? How did you break it?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Frugal

Mustard jeans outfits so far

I know, I know. You're probably sick of seeing these mustard jeans and I have to admit, I am too! Sometimes I daydream about what it would be like to have something new to wear every single day because fashion blogging would be so much easier if that were the case. But I can't imagine living that life (I'm crazy amounts of frugal, don't like things to go unused and could never get past the guilt), so on this website you get to see these jeans and other favorites on repeat often. ;-) As much as I've already worn them, I couldn't resist pairing them with a favorite polka dot shirt from a couple years ago. I love navy and mustard together, and I wore this outfit last week to shoot two segments on Great Day St. Louis (airing soon). If you could wear something brand new everyday, would you? Or do you prefer re-wearing old favorites?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Summer to Fall

I waited until the last minute to pack for Kansas and one of the shortcuts I relied on was to make a favorite summer outfit appropriate for chilly fall weather. I wore look #3 this summer, and simply switched the bottom to black jeans and boots, and added a navy wool coat (look #1), to make it cold-weather appropriate. It's a great way to re-wear your favorite outfits with enough of a spin to make them feel new again. What are some favorite summer outfits that will work for you this fall/winter?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Bad to Better

The old outfit photo, left, makes me cringe. Fashion is fickle and it seems that I am too, because often something I wore last year, I'm not into wearing the same way this year. I still love this graphic tee, and like the idea of wearing it with a blazer so I came up with a new and improved version of last year's outfit. The longer, fitted blazer is more streamlined, the statement necklace adds a sophistication, and the pumps add a feminine touch to the rock-n-roll theme. Do you ever go back and improve old outfits?

Black Friday Shopping

What I bought
I was clothes shopping from midnight to 3 a.m. last night. As a Black Friday virgin, it was quite the experience. The best time to get good deals on clothes is after Christmas and New Years, but I haven't had a successful clothes shopping trip in ages, so I decided to brave it. You can trace my steps on Twitter. Here's what I found:

1. Limited sweater, $18 - This sweater is thin enough to get a lot of use in Florida, and the length makes it perfect for pairing with leggings for air travel.
2. LOFT shirt, $27 - I've been eyeing this shirt and the 50% off promo sealed the deal. Classic white, it will look great with tons of different statement necklaces and anything from a night out to work.
3. Express shirt, $35 - They didn't have this top in the store, so I came home and ordered it online (it was 50% off, plus $8 shipping). The store associate that rang me up was wearing it and it is the most perfect aquamarine color in person (slightly darker than pictured).
4. Limited shirt, $16 - I've been hunting for a silk shirt this orange-red color since this summer and it was a great price.
5. Limited clutch, $15 - I really wanted a sparkly clutch for NYE and holiday parities, and I love the size and price on this one.
6. Express skirt, $30 - I first featured this skirt on the blog this summer, and now months later I finally bought it. The 50% off promo they were having + a gift card I've had for over a year motivated me! I wanted it to fit loose, so I got a size S.
7. Limited skirt, $22 - I was somewhat delirious and sleepy while shopping, so I'm not sure why I felt adventurous enough to buy a plaid mini-skirt. I'm going to attempt to style it when I get home, but this may go back if I wind up feeling too schoolgirl in it.
8. Limited jeans, $37 - Finallllly ended the search for off-white pants. I really wanted cords, but these jeans were just too perfect (fit + price) not to snap up.
9. Limited jeans, $15 - I got these jeans in a neon yellow color on clearance, too. Not sure that the pictured color is the same color I got?

What I tried on

1. American Eagle cords - The hunt for mint pants continues. I loved these, but it bums me out when pants are so stretchy that you can see your knee caps through them, so I passed. I sized up and tried on a 4.
2. Banana Republic dress - The mustard dress was only $15 in the store. ($26 on sale + 40% off sale items) The XS was too big up top for me though, so I reluctantly had to pass.
3. LOFT dress - I love this dress so much and would've bought it, but the size 0 was too big. (What's up with that sizing? I am not that small... Definitely size down if you order this.)
4. Limited dress - I really want a burgundy dress and this faux leather one is awesome. It was just boxy and slightly stiff, not a good combo for my body type, so I passed.
5. Limited sweater - I love this nautical cable knit sweater! They didn't have my size in the store, so I might pick it up online today.
6. Limited cardigan -  Totally obsessed with this sequin cardigan. Even at 50% off it's pricey so I'm hoping to catch it on clearance.
7. LOFT lace top - This lace top is gorgeous and the XS fit perfect, but I loved the white shirt I bought at LOFT more.
8. Limited clutch - Droooling over this hot pink clutch. I almost bought it but was trying not to spend my entire budget in the same store!
9. INC shoes - I would love to pick up a pair of sparkly shoes for the holidays and these were 50% off in the store, making them $45. I was hoping to only spend about $30 though, and getting shoes home in my suitcase was going to be tough.

Today's Everyday Fashion: Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you have a wonderful time celebrating with your friends and family today! I will likely wear this outfit for Black Friday shopping tomorrow (follow me on Twitter for the scoop on deals @jseverydayfash). I've had this top for a few weeks and have been puzzled how to wear it without looking like Where's Waldo. Mixing stripes in a similar color scheme did the trick, and in general I like this idea (striped top + striped cardigan) for all kinds of stripe mixing! Are you Black Friday shopping tomorrow? Would you wear mixed stripes?

I can't thank you enough for voting for my "naked" picture (no makeup) and helping TWOLHA win. Thanks so much for your support! xoxo, J.

Today's Everyday Fashion: Snow Leopard

I've been calling this print Dalmatian but snow leopard is another name for it! No matter what you call it, I loved the idea of wearing this dress with hot pink thanks to my inspiration photo. I also love wearing dresses as skirts with shirt over them, but I don't have a hot pink top like pictured so I used a blazer instead. This print is all over stores as evidenced by my many finds below - are you wearing snow leopard prints yet?

Today's Everyday Fashion: KC Live

I wore the top look for a night out in Orlando a couple weeks ago, and the bottom look I wore on KC Live yesterday morning (watch here). As much as I love this dress, it did not look good on TV. Experts  recommend fitted clothing in bright colors for TV/photo sessions (I've been known to pass that advice onto people as well), and I am sticking with that going forward. My posture didn't help, but the pattern and looseness of the dress didn't translate well on TV. Luckily it still looks good in person ;-) Have you given chevron dresses a try yet? Are they a yay or nay in your book?

1. Diba  2. Charlotte Russe  3. Clarks  4. Franco Sarto 5. Etienne Aigner  6. Aerosoles  7. Banana  8. Naturalizer

Today's Everyday Fashion: Outfit Shortcuts

I love Zoe Saldana's wool coat and matching booties. Her ensemble looks great, and made me realize I have a wool jacket and booties that go well together, too. I kept the theme of her outfit and added cobalt jeans and an oatmeal sweater in today's look, but my jacket + bootie combo could be used over and over again with different jeans and tops in colors such as oxblood, gray, navy, mustard, ivory, black or olive. I call these "outfit shortcuts" and can be virtually anything in your closet - bottoms and shoes that go well together, a cardigan and necklace, etc. What are some outfit shortcuts in your closet?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Mustard Jeans

Obsessed is officially the word for these mustard jeans. I wear them constantly.... maybe even too much! It's simply the color that I'm nuts for - I love that they go with anything from a chambray shirt, to bright colors, and both black and brown. The first outfit is based loosely on my inspiration photo (same combo of green top + orange necklace + yellow bottom) and the second outfit I wore last week for a day of visiting a friend's new baby and errands galore. What item(s) are a part of your constant rotation?

November Shopping

I have been so frustrated with shopping lately! I spent three hours at the mall last weekend and tried on (almost) everything pictured... and left with absolutely nothing. No fun when that happens, but here's the full scoop on what I loved and didn't love:

1. Banana Republic sweater - I loved this sweater, it was on sale for $50 in the store and am a little sad I didn't buy it now that I look back on it. The pockets are adorable.
2. Banana Republic boots - These boots!! Are so good. They are perfection. I tried them on and considered buying them, but the calf was too big for me (I wear a size 9.5 and relatively small calves so I run into this issue a lot). I'm still drooling over these boots though.
3. Banana Republic blazer - I tracked down one of these in my size to try on, and after all the trouble, I didn't love it. The lapels cover up the top two buttons (unlike the picture), and I wish the blazer buttoned instead of using a hook closure. Will be looking for something similar.
4. Banana Republic top - This was on sale for $20 in the store. I almost bought it just because it was such a good deal, but I didn't love it and I try to only buy things that I really, really love.
5. Gap velvet pants - I tried on all of these pants at Gap and this pair was by far my favorite! The fit was amazeballs and they are so soft and comfy. The color is slightly darker than pictured though and I couldn't see many outfit options other than black or silver. If I think of another way to wear them I will go back.
6. Gap mint jeans - This mint color is slightly more green than the blueish hue I'm looking for, and the fit on me was an odd inch or two too short.
7. Gap ivory cords - I was so bummed to leave the mall without finding a pair of ivory corduroy pants because they are high on my wish list. The fit on these was perfect, but they were very see-through so I passed.
8. Gap cargo pants - These cargos fit well (size down one size) and were on clearance in the store, I just couldn't imagine a lot of shoes other than heels working with a cropped, loose pant leg.
9. Gap dress - I bought this while I was in North Dakota for a steal ($25 on sale in the store!). I absolutely love it; it's a loose fit that will be great for work and casual days alike.
10. LOFT sweater - I tried this on last weekend in the store and loved it. I don't buy many sweaters since I live in Florida but if I lived in a colder climate I would definitely buy it.
11. Express sweater - I haven't seen this in person yet, but it comes in five colors and I've been eyeballing it online. I wish I lived somewhere colder to justify buying it in every color!

My hunt for my November wish list continues - mint jeans, ivory cords, something camouflage, and a baseball tee, to name a few. What are your best finds this month? What's on your wish list?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Dorothy Perkins

While I'm in Kansas I'm doing segments on two live shows, here are details if you want to tune in!
I'm wearing the top outfit for one or both appearances, and the bottom outfit is a more summery take on the same look. I just ordered this dress from Dorothy Perkins, a U.K. retailer that I've been a fan of but have never tried since they just recently launched a U.S. website. I'm way impressed with the quality, and I used a tape measure for my measurements and went with the size it suggested and it turned out to be pretty accurate (I always have trouble with U.K. sizing!). I wish it were a couple inches longer but that seems to always be the case with dresses. Huge fan of the peplum ruffle though and overall it's a great buy for the price! Have you tried the peplum trend yet? What are some of your favorite U.K. retailers?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Thanksgiving Day

This is what I'm wearing on Thanksgiving this year! I'm on a plane to Kansas today so I already have my outfit picked out. ;-) I've had this poncho for years (same poncho, different color as the one I posted a couple weeks ago here). I love being super cozy to visit family and eat lots of food, but I put together a wide range of looks below that you could wear for Thanksgiving, no matter how dressy or casual your celebration may be. The common theme is fall colors and I would most likely wear #1, 2, 7, 10 or 11 for Thanksgiving - which ones are your favorite? What will you wear on Thanksgiving this year?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Seeing the Good

I know what you guys are thinking: wow, that is one furry coat! I had the same reaction, and while I personally wouldn't feel comfortable wearing her outfit, I appreciate her point of view and admire her gusto so much. I also think you can use outfits you don't necessarily like in a practical way. I took an element I liked about it - the color scheme - and used items I've had for years to come up with an outfit that works for me. One of the cool "side effects" of blogging has been learning how differently two people can feel about the same outfit. Over time I've come to believe that there is no such thing as right or wrong (fashion is art after all), and I love how varied we all can be on the subject of the same outfit. Ultimately there is some inspiration to be gained, no matter what someone is wearing, if you just practice seeing the good. How do you view differing fashion opinions?
