Today's Everyday Fashion: This Dress Is Too Big

I didn’t realize this dress was too big until we snapped photos. Too small is easy - things pull, or scrunch up. But too big? That can be harder to detect. In this case, it’s mostly the bust area. Even with adjustable straps and a tie waist I can see now that the fabric is drooping around the bust, and the v-neck is too low-cut. Thankfully, it’s still in stock, so I ordered a size smaller to try. Because I’m loving these colorful stripes and all the possibilities for pairing - like a brown or gray moto jacket, denim jacket, or ankle boots!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Blue on Blue

Kickin’ it old school today with a catalog-inspired re-creation! When I spotted the catalog photo (below) I realized I already had all the elements to create this blue x 4 (the pants are navy) outfit. I especially like how the top half turned out - this could be cute paired with white jeans, too. And/or you could switch out the sandals for white sneakers. Overall mixing all these different blues and textures is a pretty fun idea!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Pretty Things With Bows

Is there anything better than a shirt with a big ‘ole bow?! This one in particular is a great mix between fun and professional. It works with jeans, but I’m also planning to wear it with a beige pencil skirt and red dress pants. It’s got great reviews online, and also comes in blue. And while I love the shoes I’m wearing in these photos, the shorter ones below just arrived and are SO comfy. It’s bows on bows for days!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Another Idea For This Skirt

This skirt is still in stock! And it’s pretty much my favorite thing in my closet right now, so I wanted to share another way to wear it. With all those colorful stripes, there is so much potential for mixing and matching. A blush pink moto jacket with a white t-shirt and sneaks is another idea I’d like to try. But really the possibilities are endless! Love every color in this rainbow!

Today's Everyday Fashion: What Was I Thinking?

Inspiration: Talbots

In the first photo, I’m trying to work up the nerve to put on this wool jacket, because it was 95 degrees outside! I’ve had lots of requests lately for more work outfits, and naturally a wool jacket worn two ways is what I gravitated towards and wanted to share this week. (LOL) These two outfits would certainly be appropriate for many fall climates in other parts in the country so weather aside, these were fun to put together. If I ever need something prim and proper, I will definitely reach for one of these looks in my closet. Which do you like best?

Today's Everyday Fashion: A New Shape With Your Pencil Skirt

This post is, first and foremost, about mixing two different leopard prints! Or, at least that’s where it started. But what’s a girl to do when those two prints create a less-than-stellar shape (see below, left)? You get creative! You pull out a belt to help you get the shape that you want! This belt has a sliding feature so you can make it as tight as you need, which cinches in the waist, creating a peplum shape. And the belt buckle looks right at home as the perfect little decoration right in the middle of your waist. I think the only thing missing is the “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” updo. And of course you can add a black blazer or cardigan for cooler weather!

Michigan Travel Video and Outfit Recap

What once was the cultural phenomenon of inviting friends over for a slideshow of your vacation photos while they were bored out of their skull and and rolled their eyes, is now the cultural phenomenon of posting your travel videos on YouTube. Life has come full circle!! Today I’m that nerd sharing our trip to Michigan in July. We put this together for no other reason than we love being creative together (he shot, I edited) and also to capture these memories. Why I’m sharing? I thought it could be fun to see the Michigan outfits I posted “in action” + some wanderlust shots of Michigan because the hubs is mad talented. But if not, then go on and skip this hopefully-less-boring-but-probably-only-to-me modern-day slideshow. 😉 I’ll be back at it tomorrow with a series of work outfits and inspiration I’m excited to share!

I Hit Rock Bottom 45 Days Ago - Here's How I Turned It Around

I keep looking at this pic of Joshua and I at a black tie wedding last month. I look totally normal. And we had such a blast that night! But there was so much going on below the surface that you couldn't see. Over the last year I have been:

  • Having debilitating anxiety and panic attacks

  • Struggling to connect and feel vulnerable in existing and new relationships

  • Feeling lost at work and like I have no idea what I'm doing

  • Feeling lost personally and like I have no idea who I am

I spent so much time and effort trying to control and avoid the things that were triggering my anxiety that 45 days ago, I finally realized I couldn't keep going that way. I hit rock bottom. At first, it felt like weakness to admit I was feeling that way, or to even have anxiety in the first place. But now I'm absolutely sure that it's the definition of courage to be open to confronting our past trauma, the root of our fear, or whatever it is that is holding us back. Not to ignore it like I did for so long, not to yell at it - but to sit with it calmly in the darkness and ask: "What are you here to teach me?"

In this conversation between Oprah and Gary Zukav, he describes our soul as a fleet of ships. Our purpose is to follow the mothership, which guides the path of our soul, in order to fulfill our life's purpose. Over the last year, I've gone through a raging storm. Many circumstances in my life right now are bleak, and I'm facing some very real challenges and problems that I need to solve. And in that storm, I lost my true north. I let doubt creep in. I didn't just wonder if I was going the right direction, I started to question: "Am I even in the right boat?"

Forty-five days later, most of my circumstances look exactly the same, but I feel so peaceful. I am excited about life again. I know that I am in the right boat and going the right direction (bad circumstances and all - those things don't happen in spite of your journey, they are an integral part of it). I'm steering this little boat, so I can choose to get back on course, and leave the path of the storm (I just needed to find my way out). I have absolute hope and confidence about the future, because I have faith we, as a fleet, are going somewhere great again.

Which is a lot of blah-blah fluffy stuff so here's what these past 45 days really looked like. Here's how I turned my life around in a month and a half:

  1. Admitted I needed help - This is not just something people say, you really have to admit it first. I thought ignoring anxiety would make it better, that I could outsmart it, that I could trick my brain into just letting me do whatever I wanted to do. Nope. Doesn't work that way. I was thinking "I don't have time for these issues right now with all these bad circumstances," but later I realized that those circumstances were actually because I haven't been paying enough time and attention to the issues in the first place. I had to stop focusing on the triggers and get really brave about confronting the ugly stuff underneath.

  2. Appointed a leader - I couldn't steer my own boat anymore, I needed a shipmate to take the wheel for a bit. So my next step was entering into a relationship with a therapist to help guide my progress and hold me accountable. This could also be a friend, mentor or pastor.

  3. Spent copious, selfish amounts of time on getting well - Trust me when I say I couldn't afford to take this time financially or schedule-wise, but I also couldn't afford not to. I let myself get to rock bottom so I didn't have any other choice. Setting up time in your schedule before that happens is certainly ideal and and more manageable. Copious, selfish amounts of time looked like 4-6 hours a day for me (I was barely functioning anyway so I was either going to use that time to sulk, or use it to get better), but for you copious, selfish amounts of time may be 15 minutes a day.

  4. Unplugged - I was very intentional with all that time: No personal use of social media. Skipped many social functions. Took many days off of work. Stopped watching TV. In essence, I deliberately (and at times painfully) stepped away from "numbing" behaviors - which for me are being busy and working, but also things like watching television. In place of those activities, I spent time doing yoga (often 2 classes per day), praying, connecting with friends one-on-one, talk therapy, praise and worship, reading, and listening to inspirational podcasts.

  5. Found the source - It took all of these activities for a solid month before I found the really gritty nuggets. Things buried so deep just saying them out loud for the first time was terrifying. Think of it like deep cleaning your house or fixing a car - sometimes you gotta really get in there with some elbow grease.

I've heard lots of messages that I really needed to hear in these last 45 days, and I've got pages and pages of note-taking and journaling as a result. (Writing things out was an especially helpful part of the journey that I would recommend as well.) The thing I really needed to hear most for my situation though? It came from Oprah: people often say they don't know out what their purpose or calling is, but they already know. They know deep down. It's already in there. They are just too scared to admit it because it's not going how they want it to go right now. That was the "hit upside the head" moment I needed. My true north has been there the whole time. I just needed to find it again.

- This book by Brene Brown. Helpful in sorting through the pain and numbing behaviors and really figuring out the root of it and what you're running from.
- This book about trauma. If you've ever felt unable to control emotions from past hurts and trauma. Turns out science supports this. Trauma changes our physical brain, and just like any physical injuries that might need a splint or cast for, therapies like EMDR can help your brain hit reset so you can finally move on.
- Oprah's SuperSoul podcast. Inspiring, riveting first-hand experiences of other people's journeys and how they navigate the same waters.
- This poem, Ithaka. Which reminds me a bit of The Alchemist. For when lyrical, poetic inspiration about forging ahead on our life's journey hits the spot.
- This book, The Seat of The Soul. It just came in the mail and I haven't read yet so I'm cheating a little here, but it's the source of the ship metaphor, and a bestseller for 25 years.
- Whatever books and materials you need for YOU and your specific journey. Learning more about yourself and interpreting what makes you tick, is what empowers us to be able to relate and connect with those around us. I found the book Quiet to be especially helpful in understanding being an introvert. Dodging Energy Vampires was my introduction and ah-ha moment of being an empath. And Ted Talks like Growing Up Gifted made the connection between what seemed like arbitrary classes I took as a kid, with real ways it affects my life today.

The light within me honors the light within every one of you. I hope you found some inspiration here today for your journey!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Creature Comforts

Is it still considered multiples if you purchase the second one after a long delay? The navy cardigan, below, has been a staple in my closet for going on three years now. So when I saw this very similar sweater (same texture, same shape) in new colors I got really excited. I'm all about trying new and adventurous things, but sometimes you just crave those same creature comforts. I'm a big believer in cozy outfits you can repeat over and over again and this is certainly one of them!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Reluctantly Fall

Can I be honest? Fall fashion and back-to-school shopping is usually a highlight for me, but it's barely a blip on my radar this year. I ran a quick errand at the mall last week, and all the stores were packed to the brim with fall fashion - tons of yummy camel, mustard and burgundy colors - see below. I only went home with this velvet bodysuit though (and a cardigan that I'll share tomorrow). I love this floral print, and I knew this bodysuit would be so perfect with these velvet shoes I loved so much last year. (Note: you'll also need a safety pin to keep it closed, and a black cami or bralette underneath.) And so I go reluctantly into fall - sleeveless (it's still 90 degrees lol), and not much to show for it yet. Are you excited for fall fashion this year? What trends, colors or silhouettes would you like to see featured?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Faking Fall

It's that time of year again. Stores are stocked to the brim with cozy fall items, and yet it's still 95 degrees here in Florida! We can't wear any of it yet, so today's outfit is a crash course in how to "fake" fall. A sweater minus the sleeves, a suede skirt, peep toe booties, and an overall fall color palette with hints of fall fabrics (suede, leather) without all those heavy layers though. Check out two more ideas for a suede skirt + this sweater last year, below!

Top: Marshall's, $10 (similar, similar, similar)

Today's Everyday Fashion: Back To Work

It's back to work in the most literal sense after taking some time off! If you caught my IG stories, I was back home in Kansas - boating and four-wheeling with the fam, and meeting a lifelong friend's new baby, among other things. And now it's "back to work" with a work outfit. (Note: The lace layer wouldn't work for every work situation. This tank is low-cut and needs something, so a bandeau is another option.) It's been a couple years since I've worn this jacket and this is by far my favorite look with it. I typically think of this jacket as more "boho/casual" but I'm digging the polished black and white!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Even If Nobody Likes It

I don't expect everyone to love this new top as much as I do. Based on similar outfits lately (see below); they have not been super popular. But I hope that you take this one thing from my blog if nothing else - that even with all the opinions out there (everyone has one!), comments online, looks from strangers - if it makes your heart happy you've got to do. Be brave. Have courage to wear the thing. Differing style opinions are not bad. I LOVE when people have another POV and don't like something I do or vice versa! But we often confuse having a differing opinion with forcing that opinion on someone else. Your style opinion is NEVER more correct than someone else's for one very simple reason - it's their body and their decision, not yours. If you're presenting an opinion (and you absolutely should present yours) then it shouldn't come from a place of control. As women we really have to develop tough boundaries about our appearance. Which can feel awful and selfish, especially if you're a people-pleaser like me. But your style is not for anybody else, it's for you. No other humans can matter in that decision (assuming it's not hurting anyone). You gotta do you boo. Even if nobody likes it.

And if you dig this style... check out all the under-$10 hacks below to get the same look! Plus 4 more ways to wear it. xoxo

Today's Everyday Fashion: Lace Crop Top For Work

I certainly never expected to see "lace crop top" and "work" in the same sentence but here we are. If alarm bells are going off in your head, allow me to explain. Crop tops do NOT mean your stomach is showing. Paired with all those (naturally high-waisted) pencil skirts from years ago you may still have in your closet like I do - you get the same silhouette as a tucked in shirt, without the hassle or bulge from tucking it in. (And any lace or any shirt that is "see through" is an easy fix. Just add an undershirt, or it may come with one attached, like mine above.) This look would not be appropriate for every workplace, but it's so prim and proper and pretty - it's hard to imagine it wouldn't work for many of them!

SAME TOP FOR WEEKEND - RIGHT OUTFIT

Today's Everyday Fashion: Best Ever Pencil Skirt

Left: Outfit  /  Right: SKIRT

This has been one of my favorite - and your favorite! - pencil skirts throughout the years. So when I spotted this nearly-identical dupe online I knew I had to share! And while it looks similar, I think the new version (on the right) is much higher quality - it's a textured basket weave, while mine is an inexpensive stretchy material. It also has amazing reviews - of 74 people, 90% recommend it. For more ideas on how to wear it, I rounded up some options I've posted over the years. And below that, additional picks - to help you meet that shipping minimum. 😆 In the meantime, I'll be over here trying convince myself I don't need another pencil skirt!

Today's Everyday Fashion: Yellow Gingham

Happy Monday! If you're like me and 1. are already looking forward to the weekend, 2. don't want summer end, then you might like my most recent find - a yellow gingham top from Nordstrom Rack! (These white high-waist jeans are also still in stock in most sizes, including petite and tall.) It's a combo of the shape - peplum, ruffle sleeve and tie front - mixed with the yellow gingham pattern that caught my interest. IMO, it's the best of all those worlds combined!

35 Work Outfit Ideas: Favorites So Far This Year

(Note: most of the items in these posts are way older than 2018, so qualifying them as favorites for this year is based solely on when I posted to the blog.)

Real talk: has the definition of "work" clothes dramatically changed, or is it just me? When I look at my office style 8 years ago, it was mostly pencil skirts and cardigans. Now, my work style is:

  • Big skirts.
  • Pants.
  • Ladylike dresses.
  • High-waists with a tie.

Is that just part of getting older and wanting to wear different silhouettes?

Or am I bored with the old way I used to define "work" and want to think outside the box?

Or did trends change? Silhouettes certainly have "flipped" in the last couple years. Now instead of skinny jeans with a longer top, smaller tops tucked into high-rise and full skirts are trendy. (Which does not mean you have to wear it. Don't listen to trends unless you just happen to like it, I never do!)

What are your thoughts? Are you wearing different silhouettes now, or mostly rocking originals? Which of these outfits are "work" for you, too?

Today's Everyday Fashion: Pretty Polka Dots

When you order two pleated skirts and wind up keeping both! Yesterday's rainbow stripes and today's polka dots were both just too cute to pass up. Polka dots never go out of style, and the shape and length of this skirt is so classic. It's work appropriate (prob. with a different top or a jacket over it) and yet I wouldn't hesitate to wear this look on the weekend, either. I am all about this feminine, retro style lately!
